Patented May 6, 1941A narran stares PAT" fr seien' This invention relates to an improvement in pinking machines of the type set forth in my prior patent, No. 1,984,224, granted December 11, 1934,
'Ihe object of this invention is to improve the construction of the pinking machine, as well as its operation, by the provision of anti-friction bearings. for the cutter spindle and also for the anvil which cooperates with the cutter in a pinking machine of this type; the anvil and its bearings are removable from the cradle to facilitate replacement of any of these parts, the anvil being in the form of a roller having ball bearings journaling the same as a self-contained unit, which may be dropped into a milled opening in `the cradle for easy removability and cleaning;
guarding the cutter by an extension on the housing which partly surrounds the periphery of the cutter; providing a stripper which prevents the cloth from winding around the cutter shaft; providing a double adjustment for a cloth guide which extends on opposite sides of the cutter and may be adjusted to any desired angle and be locked in an adjusted position Without danger of accidental displacement; securing the cutter on its spindle without a projection on the spindle vthrough the cutter; and providing a bed plate that may be dropped into a standard sewing machine cut-out and which will enable the pinking machine to be applied to the usual sewing machine table and used therein.
In carrying out this invention, I have illustrated a preferred embodiment thereof in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of my improved pinking machine;
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view therethrough, parts being in elevation;
Fig., 3 is a perspective view of the cloth stripper, detached;
Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional View through the housing of the pinking machine, approximately on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2, and showing the casing in section and the other parts in plan;
Fig. 5 is a cross sectional view through the tableand cradle, approximately on the line 5 5 of Fig. 2; and
Fig.. 6 is a detail end elevation of a portion of the. housing showing the stripper therein, parts being in section.
Although my improved pinking machine isvdesigned for mounting on any suitable table or stand,. it is especially constructed suitable for support on a. standard sewing machine table which: is: designated. generally by the` numeral I 1,. withinf the-,usual sewingmachine cutout of said.- table. 1 `'Ihepinlring machine. comprises a bedplate 2 .adaptedto be. seatedupon the sewing machine ,tablefhandiclamps 3 are arrangedatthe underside ofgy the bed plate 2y in position to engage oppositeLsides-,of'` the sewing machine cut-out, as
showng in Fig..1 5,u Each of the` clamps 3 is carried. by a pair` of lugs 4 having slots 5 therein receiving adjusting screws 6 which extend through the lugs 4 and into theunderside ofthe ,bed plate 2 hfor vsecuring each clamp in an ad- Ajufstedposition'. Upon loosening of the set screws r.I ihthe clamps-5l may be adjusted laterally to different positionsto accommodate for diiferent sized cut-outs in varioussewing machine tables, accordihgto the width of the cut-out or opening therein, andv to securely hold the `pinlring ma chine `within said` cut-out for operation on the sewing machine: table.
i The bed plate;A carries4 a housing Il which is cast'.integraltherewith, preferably, and which is iip'st'andi'ng'onY the bed plate, with a fly wheel guard. 'at one end thereof. `Jurnaled'.within the. housing 'l is a drive shaft 9.' carryi'nga pulley I il on the outer end thereof which receives-a. belt II', that may be operated `from the usual sewing machine drive. The inner` endl ofjtliedrive shaft. 9' carries a pinion |25 meshingjwith a gear I`3 on a cutter spindle I4" extending lengthwise in the housing 7. The
opposite end portions of the cutter spindle I4 are journaled in cages of ball bearings I5 mounting in the housing 1 for free operation and to ',ellininate,wear Orf thespindle. Openings I6 are providedin thehousing. 'l' for lubricating the bearings ofthe'shafts 9 and |42 The,l inner end portion ofl the spindle I4 is reducedat' I'If,l on' Which reduced portion is mount* edr the cutter` I'B'which. hasa serrated edge to accomplish the 'pinking' operation. The length of; the reduced4 portion IT is less than the thicknessr of the `cutter I8, so that said reduced portion `on the spindle dcesjnot project through the cut- The cutter I8 operates within a nose guard 20 which is substantially semi-cylindrical and projects lengthwise from the inner end of the housing 1, being rigidly secured thereto or integral therewith. 'I'his forms an effective guard for the cutter against injury to the operator.
A stripper 2| is arranged beside the cutter I8, generally in the relation shown in Figs. 5 and 6, in order to prevent the cloth from winding around the cutter spindle I4. The stripper 2l 1s carried by a wire frame 22, one end of which is inserted into the inner end of the housing 1, to which it is secured by a set screw 23.
Also mounted on the bed plate 2 beside the cutter I8 is a double cloth guide 24 which extends to opposite sides of the cutter I8, as shown in Fig. 4. Each opposite end of the double cloth guide 24 is provided with a lug 25 extending laterally thereof and seated upon the bed plate 2. Each lug 25 has a slot 26 therein receiving a set screw 21 that is threaded into the bed plate 2 to adjust the cloth guide 24 to any desired position with respect to the cutter I8. 'Ihus the cloth guide may be adjusted to different parallel positions toward or away from the cutter I8, or adjusted to any desired angular position with respect thereto, according to the desired angle of cut relative to Vthe material, and may be effectively locked in such adjusted positions without danger of turning therefrom, as Would be the case if locked only at one side.
Mounted beneath the bed plate 2 and operating in cooperative relation with the cutter I8 is an anvil 28 in the form of a roller which projects through an orifice 29 in the bed plate and has its periphery bearing against the ,periphery of the cutter I8. The anvil 28 is mounted on a shaft 30 to which it is rigidly secured, and said shaft 30 rotates in a pair of ball bearings 3 I each of which is a self-contained and enclosed assembly. The anvil 28 is supported by a cradle 32 having a slot 33 therein which receives the anvil 28, and at opposite sides of the slot 33 are seats 34 receiving the ball bearing assemblies 3I. The assemblies 3l are removably seated in the seats 34 for ready removal therefrom with the anvil 28, the entire assembly being capable of being lifted out of the cradle 32 in order to replace the anvil or any of the ball bearings or for cleaning of these' parts in a ready and simple manner. The cradle 32 is pivotally supported at 35 to a bracket 36 extending downwardly from the underside of the bed plate 2. The opposite end of the cradle 32 is seated upon one end of a leaf spring 31 which extends over a pin 38 intermediate its ends and on which it is capable of rocking, the opposite end of the leaf spring 31 being engaged by an adjusting screw 39 threaded through the bed plate 2. Upon turning down the adjusting screw 39, the inner end of the leaf spring 31 is turned upward,
resiliently pressing the anvil 28 against the cutter I8.
The operation of the machine will be evident from the foregoing description, and from the accompanying drawings. The material is fed transversely over the bed plate 2' between the anvil 28 and the cutter I8, the latter being driven through its spindle I4, gearings I2-I3, drive shaft 9, pulley I0, and belt II, from the driving mechanism of the machine or the standard sewing machine and the serrated edges of the cutter I8 produce the pinking effect on the cloth. The guide 24 guides the material intov and through the machine, serving as a guide on both sides of the cutter I8 and may be adjusted to any desired position.
It will be evident that either the cutter or the anvil may be driven positively and the other operated idly in engagement therewith. Thus the anvil 28 may be mounted on the spindle I4, if desired and be positively driven and the cutter be mounted in the cradle 32 in place of the anvil, the operation being otherwise the same.
The term anti-friction is used in the claims to distinguish from a plain surface friction bearing, even though lubricated, and to deine the type of bearing unit containing ball-bearings, roller-bearings, and the like.
