(01. 139-334) This invention relates to separable fastener de"-, vices employing stringers having interengaging links or elements with'a slider' movable along said elements to couple and uncouple the same and more particularly to the mounting tape or tapes of stringers of this class; and the object of the invention is to provide a tape comprising a unitary woven body so fashioned as to provide a relatively wide elastic or extensible portion and one or more non-elastic portions to which the couplinglinks or elements are secured and which also provides means' for attaching the tape to a suitable support; a further object being to provide a tape of the class described wherein both side edge portions of thetape include the non-elastic portions, and further wherein the non-elastic portion may be employed interme diate the side edges'of thetape; a still further object being to providea fastener device of the class described with unitary tapes involving elastic members whereby a yieldable coupling is provided between opposed edges of a garment or other article to becoupled together by said fastener; and with these and other objects in view, the invention consists in a device of the class and for the purpose specified, which is sim'- ple in construction, efficient in use, and which 1 is constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.

The invention. is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a' part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which:

In the use of separable fastener devices of the class under consideration in connection with various articles of apparel and in fact, in connection with other articles of manufacture, it is at times desirable to provide means for yieldably mounting the fastener device in connection with its opposed supports to provide rela-' tive movement of the supports one with respect to the other, for example, in the use of devices of the kind under considerationin connection,

with shoes, overshoes and other footwear, and also on corsets, corselets, brassieres and similar or other garments or articles of apparel to compensate for body movement and to provide a non-binding mounting of the garment upon the wearer, it being further understood that a fastener of this type will also find its usefulness in other articles of manufacture wherein itis desirable to provide means to compensate for stresses or strainsto which the article may be subjected.

In Fig. 1 of the drawing, I have indicated a part of a separable fastener employing stringers- Hi, I Ila, each consisting of a mounting tape or strip H, Ila, to one edge portion of which are attaching coupling links or elements I2, -l2a. At I3 I have indicated a rider or slider mounted to move longitudinally of the links to couple and uncouple the same, aflnger piece or pull I4 being provided to facilitate the operation of the slider. In carrying my invention into effect, I construct the mounting tape or tapes of the fastener device from a single or unitary body which is so fashioned or woven as to provide a non-extensible or non-elastic edge portion l5 including a corded or beaded edge I50. and a wire insert l5b exposed through at least one edge ofthe tape longitudinally thereof to contact all of the links I2, vl2a which are mounted on the corded or beaded edge 15a to facilitate the electroplating of said links. Extending outwardly from the portion I5 is a relatively wide extensible or elastic portion l6 woven integrally with the portion IS. The portion I6 is so woven as to provide yielding or extensible characteristics, especially in a direction transversely of the strip or may include in the weave elastic elements to provide the desired yielding or extensible characteristics'to the tape.

By constructing a tape in accordance with the structure above described, the non-extensible edge portion l5 may be made strong and durable facilitating the attachment of the coupling links or elements therewith and to provide a secure and positive mounting of the elements thereon and at the same time providing a mounting edge portion which will adapt the tape for use in the production of die cast or molded links or elements.

In Fig. 2 of the drawing, I have indicated one manner of attaching the stringers to opposed supports which consists in attaching the tapes ll, Ila to opposed supports l1, Ha as at I8, l8a, it being apparent that the outer side edges of the tapes or the elastic or yieldable portions l6 thereof are attached to provide, by virtue of the transverse extensibility of the mounting tapes movement of the supports ll, Ila toward and from each other. When the fastener is not subject to stress or strain, the adjacent edges of the supports l1, Ila will be maintained in close proximity to each other.

In Fig. 3 of the drawing, I have shown a slight modification in the manner of mounting the fastener to the supports l1, Ila which consists simply in including an inner facing or lining portion l9, l9a which is attached to the tapes ll, Ila by the same stitching as at l8, l8a. This construction forms what might be termed pockets longitudinally of the adjacent edges of the supports l1, Ila in which the fastener is yieldably mounted, it being understood that the slider I3 is free to move longitudinally of the pocket or pockets.

In Fig. 4 of the drawing, I have shown a detail view of a modified form of mounting tape or strip that I may employ which consists of two non-extensible edge portions 20, 2| and an intermediate elastic or extensible portion 22. The portion 20 has a beaded edge 20a for the attachment of the links or elements thereto and this beaded portion may also include the wire insert 20b which may be employed as a reinforcing means or as a means for facilitating the electro-plating of the links in accordance with the teachings defined in a prior application filed by Louis H. Morin, September 8, 1934 and bearing SerialNumber 743,256. With the construction shown in Fig. 4, the non-extensible portion 2| will provide a more rigid and secure mounting of the tape in connection with the support, it being understood that the stitchings or other means of attachment will be passed through the portion 2|.

In Fig. 5 of the drawing, I have shown another form of strip consisting of two non-extensible edges 23, each being beaded as seen at 23a and including the wire inserts 23b. Intermediate the portions 23 is an elastic or extensible portion 24. This type of strip may be used in connection with a multiple or duelfastener, that is to say, one employing two sets or a pair of interengaging links. It is understood in this connection that the elastic portion 24 may be varied in width to suit the particular article in connection withawhich the device is employed and may, in some cases, constitute a considerable part of a garment, especially in the art of corsets, corselets, girdles and like garments. One of the beaded edges 23a need not necessarily include the wire insert, in which event, the beaded edge will be used solely as a means of attachin Fig. 5 being that two extensible or elastic portions 28, 284 are employed which are subdivided by a non-extensible intermediate portion 21 which may simply form a part of a garment, in which event, the width thereof will depend entirely upon the des'i'red spacing required between the coupling ends controlled by the edge portions 25 or the portion 21 may simply constitute a strip'providing means for attachment of a dual fastener to a suitable support, the stitchings or other fastening means passing through the non-extensible or reinforcing portion 21.

From the foregoing, it will appear that my improved mounting tape or strip for separable fasteners of the kind under consideration will adapt the fastener to many varied uses wherein the desirability of providing a yieldable coupling between two supports is a factor or advantageous to the more comfortable arrangement of a garment upon the body of a wearer or in compensating for stresses and strains between two supports coupled together by my improved fastener. While certain uses of the invention have been herein indicated, these are merely illustrative of other uses to which the device may be applied.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

1. A tape for separable fasteners of the class described comprising ,an elongated strip of fibrous material, consisting of a wide freely extensible or yieldable portion and a narrow nonextensible side edge portion having a dense uniform rib weave throughout the length of said strip and contrasting in structure to the weave of the first named portion of said strip to provide a strong and durable edge portion, the free edge of said side edge portion being beaded and including a wire extending longitudinally of said edge and interwoven therewith, and said wire being exposed through the outer surface of the strip at close intervals throughout the length thereof.

2. In stringers for separable fasteners of the class described, a mounting tape consisting of a unitary woven body of fibrous material woven to form a uniform, non-extensible, strong and durable rib portion extending longitudinally of one edge of the tape and to which the coupling links or elements of the stringer are attached, a relatively wide elastic or extensible portion extending from said non-extensible portion in the direction of the other side edge of said mounting tape, the first named edge portion of the tape being beaded, and a wire interwoven with said edge portion and extending longitudinally thereof, said wire beingexposed at the outer surface of the strip at close intervals.

In stringers for separable fasteners of the class described, a mounting tape consisting of a unitary woven body of fibrous material woven to form a uniform non-extensible, strong and durable rib portion extending longitudinally of one edge of the tape and to which the coupling links or elements of the stringer are attached, a relatively wide elastic or extensible portion extending from said non-extensible portion in the direction of the other side edge of said mounting tape, the first named edge portion of the tape being beaded, a wire interwoven with said edge portion and extending longitudinally thereof, and the other side edge of said tape ineluding a non-extensible edge portion arranged 15 longitudinally thereof said wire being exposed at the outer surface of the strip at close intervals.

In stringers for separable fasteners of the class described, a mounting tape consisting of a unitary woven body of fibrous material woven to form a uniform non-extensible, strong and durable rib portion extending longitudinally of one edge of the tape and to which the-coupling links or elements of the stringer are attached, a relatively wide elastic or extensible portion extending from said non-extensible portion in the direction of the other side edge of said mounting tape, the first named edge portion of the tape being beaded, a wire interwoven with said edge portion and extending longitudinally thereof, the other side edge of said tape including a non-extensible edge portion arranged longitudinally thereof, and the tape including intermediate the edge portions thereof a longitudinal non-extensible portion dividing the extensible part of the tape into a plurality of transversely spaced portions.

5. A tape for separable fasteners of the class described comprising an elongated strip of fibrous material, consisting of a wide freely extensible or yieldable portion and integrally woven therewith a narrow non-extensible side edge portion having a dense uniform rib weave throughout the length of said strip and contrasting in structure to the weave of the first named portion of said strip to provide a strong and durable edge portion.

6. A tape for separable fasteners of the class described comprising an elongated strip of fibrous material, consisting of a wide freely extensible or yieldable portion and integrally woven therewith a narrow non-extensible side edge portion having a dense uniform rib weave throughout the length of said strip and contrasting in structure to the weave of the firstnamed portion of said strip to provide a strong and durable edge portion, and the free edge of said side edge portion being beaded.

'7. A tape for separable fasteners of the class described comprising an elongated strip of fibrous material, consisting of a wide freely extensible or yieldable portion and integrally woven therewith a narrow non-extensible side edge portion having a dense uniform rib' weave throughout the length of said strip and contrasting in structure to the weave of the first named portion of said strip to provide a strong and durable edge portion, and the side edge of the first named extensible portion of the strip having integrally woven therewith a narrow nonextensible portion extending throughout the length of said strip.

8. A tape for separable fasteners of the class described comprising an elongated strip of fibrous material, consisting of a wide freely extensible or yieldable portion and a narrow non-extensible side edge portion having a dense uniform rib weave throughout the length of said strip and contrasting in structure to the weave of the first named portion of said strip to providev a strong and durable edge portion, the side edge of the first named extensible portion of the strip having a narrow non-extensible portion extending throughout the length of said strip, and another extensible portion integrally woven with and extending longitudinally of said strip in spaced relation to said first named extensible portion.

9. In stringers for separable fasteners of the class described, a mounting tape consisting of a unitary woven body of fibrous material woven to form a uniform non-extensible, strong and durable rib portion extending longitudinally of one edge of the tape and to which the coupling links or elements of the stringer are attached,

and a relatively wide elastic or extensible portion integrally woven with and extending from said non-extensible portion in the direction of the other side edge of said mounting tape.

10. A separable fastener of the class described comprising stringers consisting of mounting tapes having coupling links attached to and spaced longitudinally of one edge portion of saidtapes, said links being adapted to be coupled and uncoupled in the operation of the fastener, each stringer. tape of the fastener comprising a body ofjfib'rous material woven to form a uniform strong and durable non-extensible rib portion arranged longitudinally of one edge of the tape to which edge the coupling links of the fastener are attached, a relatively wide elastic or extensible portion integrally woven with and arrangedlongitudinally of the tape and extending from said non-extensible portion in the direction of the other side edge of said tape and that part of the non-extensible edge portion to which the links are attached being enlarged.
