Description
M. HO'BAN. Chimney-Gleaner.
No. 206,789. Patented Aug. 6,1878.-
N.PETERS, FHOYO-LITHOGRAP"ER, WASHMGTON, D c,
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
MICHAEL HOBAN, OF ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA.
IMPROVEMENT IN CHIMNEY-CLEANERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 206,789, dated August 6, 1878; application filed January 25, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, MICHAEL HOBAN, of St. Paul, Ramsey county, in the State of Minnesota, have invented a new and Improved Chimney-Cleaner; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation with the arms closed. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the cleaner with the arms spread apart. Fig. 3 shows details of the removable scraping-blade.
The object of my invention is to provide an adjustable cleaner for chimneys and fines and it consists in a pair of arms pivoted together near one end and provided with brushes and scrapers at the other ends, controlled by cords, and a weight swung by a double-swivel connection, as hereinafter more fully described and set forth. 4
In order that those skilled in the art may make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the manner in which I have carried it out.
In the said drawings, A A are two arms pivoted near their upper ends together by means of a slot in one and the pivot a, and provided at their lower ends with scrapers H II and at their upper ends with eyes aw and c c. The upper ends of the arms are bent nearly at right angles at NNto the main portions.
A cord, F, has each end attached to one of the eyes w .1, and this, in turn, at its center is fastened to an operating-cord, I.
A V-shaped flexible rod has its ends looped into eyes at d, and from the peak of the V is a snap-hook bar, G, suspending, by means of a swivel, s, and pivoted sling t, a spherical weight 0.
About two-thirds the distance down the arms A A are eyes 0 0, connected by a cord, E, having its center attached to an operatingcord, R.
Immediately above the scrapers H H are pivoted transversely-crimped-edged plates m m, into which slide brushes B B. The upper edges of plates m m are pivoted to plates at at l, and they are pivoted at k to plates 'i, provided with slots and a set-screw, i, by means of which the angle at which the brushes B B set in relation to the arms A A may be changed at will, the upper edges of the brushes being thrown in or out just as plate 17 is moved up or down.
When it is desirable to use a scraper of a large size it can be attached, as seen in Fig. 3, by means of the slots 2 in the arms A A and the pins 1). Long slots 1) bin the arms allow the flexible V-shaped rod D to open and close freely.
It will be readily seen that when the cleaner is supported by cord P the weight 0 will keep the arms A A closed, as seen in Fig. 1, the flexible rod D contracting in proportion. When the support is transferred from cords 1 and F to cords R and E, the points of suspension being changed in relation to the points of suspension of weight 0, the weight will throw the lower ends of arms A A apart. so as to bring the brushes l3 and scrapers H in contact with the sides of the flue or chimney and clean them.
Proper manipulation of cords It and P with alternately raising and lowering the cleaner will give the brushes and scrapers full contact with the sides to be cleaned.
The heavy weight 0, besides being of great utility in crushing ofi projecting bricks, slate, &c., left in the chimney by accident, will, by means of its double swivel connection and gravity, besides its spherical form, carry the cleaner down through portions of the chimney that may not be perpendicular.
I am aware that chimney-cleaners have heretofore been made with spring-arms, one end of each fixed, in combination with a sliding yoke. This I do not claim; but,
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The pivoted arms A A, in combination with cords E F and weight G, substantially as set forth.
2. In combination with the arms A A, a
chimney-cleaning device, the pivoted plates 1' 4. In a chilmteycleaning device, a doublyn m, brushes 13 B, and set-screw i, substalr swiveled spherical suspended weight, substantially as described. tially as described.
3. In combination with the arms A A, the MICHAEL IIOBAN. flexible V-sha-ped bar I) and weight C, sub \Yitnesses: stantially as described, for the purpose set JOHN D. OBRIEN,
forth. I M A. Sum: TALL.
