UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
SAMUEL BENDER, OF BUCHANAN, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT-TO SIDNEY SCRAVVNER.
IMPROVEMENT IN FOLDING BEDSTEADS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 206,765, dated August G, 1878; application filed April 18, 1878.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SAMUEL BENDER, of Buchanan, in the county of Berrien and State of Michi gan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Bedsteads 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a bedstead of that class to which my improvement is applied 5 and Fig. 2 is a similar detail View, on an enlarged scale, looking at the bed-rail at an angle exposing its bottom.
Similar vletters of reference denote corresponding parts in both the figures.
This invention relates to certain improvements in the construction of a bedstead, the' object of which is to enable it to be folded up into the smallest possible compass.
The construction is as follows, referring' to the drawings, in which- A A are the ends or head and foot pieces of the bedstead. a a are small brackets or fixtures, forming part of the side pieces and projecting from diagonally-opposite corners of the end pieces, A A.
B B are the side pieces. Each of these consists of two pieces, b b, of equal length, hinged together, as shown, and hinged at the ends to the corner of one of the end pieces and to the bracket a of the other. The hinges, it will be observed, are so arranged as to permit the side pieces to fold together and toward each other, the brackets a a serving to preserve symmetry when the bed is folded, as shown in Fig. 2. @Ehe hinges may all be of any suitable construction. The pivot-pins c ofthe central hinges pr'oject a short distance below the side pieces, and through slots or recesses e c in plates d d, secured to the under side of the side pieces. The plates al d thus form hooks, which catch from opposite sides around thc pins c, thus sustaining and relieving a considerable portion ofthe strain upon the side pieces and hinges.
The slats C C iit, in the usual manner, in mortises or recesses fj' in the side pieces. For convenience, the slats are connected by connecting-pieces D D, in two sections, G G. which are easily put in position in the bed when this is unfolded.
From the foregoing description, and by reference to the drawings hereto annexed, the advantages of my invention will be readily perceived. In parlors, oices, and other places where it is necessary to have a bed, it is often desirable that this, during the day, should occupy as little space as possible. My improved bedstead, it will be seen, folds up in so small a compass as to be easily pushed out of the way. It is durable, simple, and may be manufactured at a small cost.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- In combination witlnthe hinged sections of a folding bedstead, the inwardly-projecting ilanges or supports d d, hooked around the lower ends ofthe hinge-pintles, and supporting in a measure the sides of the bedstead and relieving the hinges of strain, substantially as shown and set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto afxed my si gnature in presence of two witnesses.
SAMUEL BENDER.
