Description
Dec. 29, 1936. c. WURZLOW COVER FASTENING MEANS Filed June 5, 1936 J' fy. Q?
Inventor (Ziaz'n 1/22/ 208 g Attorney Patented Der... 29, 1936 UNITED STAT OFFIE 1 Claim.
My invention relates generally to cover fastening means for such as garbage receptacles and the like, and particularly to fastening means which positively maintain the cover in place but 5 which is easily manipulable to permit removal of the cover, and an important object of the invention is to provide means of the character indicated which are simple, inexpensive, and effective,
and do not become lost from the cover.
Other important objects of my invention will be apparent from a reading of the following description taken in connection with the drawing, wherein for purposes of illustration I have shown a preferred embodiment of my invention.
In the drawing:-
Figure 1 is a transverse vertical sectional view taken through an embodiment of the invention and showing the cover fastening means in locking position.
Figure 2 is a horizontal sectional view taken through the upper part of the receptacle, and
Figure 3 is an elevational view of the upper part of the receptacle and showing the locking lug receiving opening.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral 5 generally designates a receptacle such as a garbage can which is provided with a removable cover 6 which has a depending flange l which is arranged to surround the upper end of the can 5 when in the closed position.
In accordance with the present invention one side of the flange l is provided with 2. lug 8 which is adapted to seat in and enter an opening 9 formed in the can 5 below its upper edge while the cover is in the closed position.
At the diametrically opposite side of the can and cover the cover is provided with the fastener device which is generally designated l and which is U-shaped in form, having a long leg ll provided with a downward and laterally directed lug l2; and a comparatively short leg l3 which is devoid of a lug and is plain. Both legs are preferably though not necessarily of round cross section.
The leg II is slidably disposed through a conformably-shaped opening I in the cover 6 inwardly of the flange l. The leg I3 is slidably projected through openings l and [6 in the flange 1 and in the side of the can 5, respectively.
50 In the disengaged position of the fastener the leg II remains engaged with the can cover while the leg I3 is disengaged from both the can cover and the can as shown in dotted lines in Figure 1. The fastener is provided with a looped bight portion I! which is so arranged that it exerts a spring action upon the legs II and I3, forcing them toward each other, so that frictional engagement of the legs is procured with the can cover and with the can, which, combined with the natural frictional engagement of the can cover with the can, produces substantially positive binding of the cover on the can. The handle ll of the locking device must be pulled out by hand to the dotted line position shown in Figure 1, before the cover can be released from the can.
The lug it on the leg H positively prevents pulling of the looking or fastening device from the can cover 6 while the can cover is separated from the can, while a lug i l near the opposite end of the leg ll prevents the leg H from being pushed in too far since the fastening means is entirely in the cover of the can, no amount of battering of the can, to which it is subject in handling while the cover is removed, will affect the efficiency of the fastening means.
Although I have shown and described herein a preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be definitely understood that I do not desire to limit the application of the invention thereto, and any change or changes may be made in the materials, and in the structure and arrangement of the parts, within the spirit of the invention and the scope of the subjoined claim.
What is claimed is In combination, a receptacle, a cover on the receptacle and having a flange surrounding a portion of the receptacle when the cover is in place thereon, a lug on said flange engageable with a. receiving opening in the receptacle, and fastening means carried by a diametrically opposite side of the cover and engageable with the receptacle when in fastening position, the fastening means comprising a U-shaped member having one leg slidable in an opening in the cover and another leg slidable into a position in which it engages holes in the said flange and in the receptacle, when in fastening position, a lug on one of said legs acting as a stop for engaging the cover to prevent separation of the fastening means from the cover.
