It is the principal object of the invention to provide an improved lipstick holder that is simple in construction and economical to manufacture. With these general objects and others in view, the invention consists in the features, combinations, details of construction and arrangements of parts which will iirst be described in connection with the accompanying drawing and then more particularly pointed out;

Referring to the drawing, and more particularly to Figs. 1-6, the embodiment of the invention here illustrated as an example includes a casing 2| rectangular in cross section and open at the lower end. The upper end of the casing is rounded and is cut out to form an opening 22 for the lipstick 23. The lipstick is mounted in a cup-like carrier 24 having a vertical movement .in the holder.
The invention in its entirety includes an actuating unit comprising a thumb-piece and a iiexible strip connecting the latter with the carrier, part of the strip serving as a closure for opening 22. As here shown as an example, mov- .able within the casing and guided as later described, is a exible strip 25. In carrying out the invention to what is now considered the best advantage, this strip is formed of a non-metallic substance, for example, a plastic material such as the plastic cellulose acetate compound commonly marketed under the name P1astecele. One end of iiexible strip 25 is connected to the carrier 26. At some distance from its other end, the strip is riveted to an actuating thumbpiece 28. This thumb-piece operates in a slot 29 formed in the front wall of casing 2l.
The invention in its entirety includes an insert or liner capacitated to be formed from a flat stamping and providing guiding means for the exible strip and a closure for slot 29. In the embodiment illustrated as an example in Figs. 1-5, the liner comprises parallel side walls 3l, 32, rounded at their ends as appears more clearly in Fig. 5. 'I'hese side walls arerconnected by an integral front wall 33q which terminates just short of the rounded ends of the side wall (Figs. 2, 3). The rear of the liner is provided with a longitudinal opening for the passage of rivet 26. In the present exempliication this end is attained by omitting a rear wall entirely, the l liner in the casing so as to attain and maintain the proper spacing for free movement of the flexible strip. v
In closed position of the'holder (Figs. l and 2), the thumb-piece 28 is at the top of slot 29 and the free end of exible strip covers opening 22, thus closing the upper end of the holder. In order to use the lipstick, the thumb-piece is moved down the slot. 'Ihe consequent movement of the flexible strip 25 advances the carrier upwards in the holder. At the same time, the free end of the strip is withdrawn into the holder so that by the time the advancing end of the lipstick reaches the top of the holder, opening 22 has been uncovered. This permits continued movement of the thumb-piece to project the lipstick to a position for use (Fig. 3). Reverse movement of the thumb-piece returns the parts to initial position.
During these movements, the flexible strip 25 is guided at the iront by the casing and the front wall 33 of the liner. At the upper end, the strip is guided between the round top of the casing and the rounded ends of the liner side walls. At the lower end, the strip is guided between the rounded ends of the liner side walls and a part hereinafter referred to.

It will be apparent that the liner described can be economically ionned from a nat stamping, the side walls 3|, 32, being bent up to the form shown.
The invention in its entirety includes a closure for the open lower end of the casing and means for anchoring closure and liner together by the mere act of assembly. As here. shown as an example, the closure comprises a U-shaped insert comprising a bottom closure plate 40 and side plates 4i. Each side plate 4i has two holes 42 for taking over pin-like nibs 43 on the liner side wall, formed by striking up the metal thereof. During assembly. the side plates 4i spring suiilciently to enable the holes 42 to be passed over pins 43, whereupon closure and liner are automatically anchored together, thus positioning the liner in the casing.
The invention in its entirety includes means for anchoring the unit, comprising the liner and end closure, in the casing by the simple act of assembly. As here shown as an example, the side plate 4l of the end closure has a half-moon hole 45. Struck in from the side wall of the casing is a corresponding nib (not shown). When the assembled liner and end closure are inserted in the casing, the nib snaps into hole 45 and anchors the unit in the casing. For convenience, each side plate 4i is provided with a hole 45 so the end closure can be assembled indiierently faced.
There is provided a guiding element for the lower end of the holder for cooperating with rounded ends of the liner side walls. As here illustrated as an example, this guiding element comprises an arc-shaped plate 46 having, at each end, a supporting leg 41. This guiding element is supported on the inner face of closure plate 40. It is positioned transversely by side plates 4i and longitudinally, once assembled, by the casing (Fig. 3).
With the construction described, the bottom A closure is secured in the casing and the proper relative position of the liner in the casing is attained and maintained. Moreover, this end is accomplished by the simple act of assembly and the closure and hner can, if desired, be removed for inspection, repairs and the like.
Fig. 7 illustrates a modification embodying a different method of connecting the ilexible strip with the carrier cup 24, but otherwise identical. Rivet 25 is omitted and the end of the strip has secured thereto, as by riveting, a simple pin 55. This pin takes into a suitable hole in the carrier cup. This construction simplifies assembly in that the parts are connected simply by inserting pin 55 in the carrier. Once the parts are assembled in the casing, pin 55 is prevented from withdrawing by the adjacent wall of the casing.
Figs. 8 and 9 illustrate a modiiled form of liner. As there shown, the liner comprises side walls 48, 49, like side walls Il, 32, and a front wall 50 like front wall 33, except that the dished arrangement is omitted. At the rear are in-l turned flanges 5I forming, in effect. a rear wall having a vertical slot 52 for the passage of rivet 25 or pin 55, whichever form is used. At the upper end, each flange 5| has a positioning nib 53. This liner, like the one ilrst described, is conveniently formed from a at stamping.
What is claimed is:
1. In a lipstick holder. and inl combination, a casing having a rounded top cutaway to form an end opening, a three-sided liner in the casing comprising two side walls having rounded ends and an integral connecting wall terminating short of the rounded ends ot the side walls, a
