This invention relates to improvements in devices for protecting the hands and arms of a berrypicker and also in the provision of means for collecting the berries as they are picked.

The principal object of this invention is the provision of a means within the device for providing a convenient grip for the operator and also the provision of means associated with the gripping means for directing the picked berry as it is dropped from the operators hand into a collecting compartment.

Another object of the invention is its particular arrangement of parts so that the device may be used on either hand of the operator or an operator may use one on each hand.

Still another object of the invention is the provision of means to facilitate emptying the collecting compartment without injury to the berries.

These and other objects will appear as my invention is more fully hereinafter described in the following specifications, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and finally pointed out in the appended claims.

In the drawing Figure 1 is a side elevation of my device in operative position upon an operator's hand.

Figure 2- is a perspective view of the device from the front.

Figure 3 is a top-plan view of the device with the top removed.

Referring now more particularly to the drawing Reference numeral l indicates generally the main body of my device which comprises a metallic housing or sleeve having side walls 2 and 3, a top wall 4, and a bottom wall 5. The side Walls, 2 and 3 of the housing, are extended downwardly to form the side Walls of a collecting compartment which is formed with an end wall 6 and a-bottom wall 7. One end of the collecting compartment is provided with a door 8 attached as at 9 to the bottom wall 1. This door may be provided with a spring to normally maintain the door closed or it may be provided with any approved form of spring catch ill to maintain the door in closed position.

Interconnecting the sleeve with the collecting compartment, and in open communication therewith, is a bypass I I having an arcuate outer wall I 2 and end walls l3 and i4, Adjacent the wall I3 of the bypass, and extending toward the interior of the sleeve is a bafile plate i5., The floor 5 is cut away as at it to enlarge the passageway between the interior of the sleeve and the interior of the collecting compartment.

Disposed within the sleeve l and positioned at its forward end is a handgrip ll secured to the floor 5 by any suitable means, such for instance, as soldering or the like. Superimposed upon the handle ii is a deflecting plate l8 directed toward the passageway between the sleeve and the collecting compartment.

The operationof the device is as follows:

As a berry is picked and dropped from the fingers of the operator, it strikes the deflecting plate i 8 and falls by gravity into the bypass and thence into the collecting compartment. Thus the berries are deposited in a container with a minimum amount of handling by the picker. When the collecting compartment is filled the door 8 is opened and the contents of the compartment are emptied into any suitable receptacle. The baflle plate l5 prevents the berries from rolling lengthwise of the housing between the arm of the operator and the side Wall of the housing.

While I have shown a particular form of embodiment of my invention, I am aware that many minor changes therein will readily suggest themselves to others skilled in the art without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention. Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is:-

1. A berry picking device comprising a housing for the arm and part of the hand of an operator, gripping means disposed within the said housing, a container disposed below said housing, a bypass in open communication with said housing and said container, and means superimposed upon the gripping means for directing an object into said bypass.

2. A berry picking device comprising a housing adapted to embrace the arm of an operator, a container disposed below said housing and separated therefrom by a wall, a bypass in open communication with said housing and container, gripping means disposed within the housing near the forward end thereof, and means mounted upon said gripping means for directing an object into said bypass for delivery into the container.
