POCKET ATOMIZER Filed March 7, 1951 ffy 2 f4- O )gj Egt! /56 /5 l Us /52 /53 Y INVENToR menud- Det. 1, 193e UNITED STATES PATENT "oFFICE POCKET ATOMIZER John Holtzmau, New York, N. Y.
Application4 March 7, 1931, Serial No. 520,988
This invention relates to atomizers adapted to be carried about the person of the user.
Fig. 1 is a vertical section of my improved atomizer, taken on the line of Fig. 2.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same.
Fig. 3 is a horizontal section of the same, taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
In the practical embodiment of my invention, the means for locking the plunger of the atomizer may'also be used to rotate the atomizer cover |62 and pipe sealing means 28 carried by the cover, out of the way so that the atomizing operation may be performed. Toward this end, the plunger |50 is preferably made of non-circular cross-section and is provided with a recess as |5| for the reception of the locking edge |52. Said locking edge forms one wall of an aperture as |53 in a suitable slide as |54 mounted on the top |55 of the casing l0. The slide |54 terminates in a suitable enlarged finger piece |56 which passes through a suitable aperture in the casing wall and projects sufficiently for manual operation thereof by the finger of the user. The slide |54 is normally pressed outwardly by means of the leaf spring |51 which is secured at one end to said slide as at |58, the other end |59 thereof being free and engaging the shaft |60. Said shaft is pivoted in the upstanding walls |6| of the casing I0 and pivotally supports one end of the cover 62. At its other end, the cover is provided with a depending wall |63 adapted to close the aperture |64 in the casing wall. The bent locking spring |65 secured tothe cover is adapted to enter said aperture |64 for retaining the cover removably in its normal position. The means for atomizing the perfume in the casing I0 is well known and hence need not be described at great length. Suill'ce it to say that a suitable cylindrical pump compartment or cylinder as 39 is provided in the casing I0, which compartment is closed at its lower end by a suitable screw plug threaded to the lower end of the cylinder. usual piston with its air valves is provided on the plunger |50 and snugly ts inside the wall of the cylinder 39. The upper end of the cylinder 39 is closed by a suitable removable screw plug which also serves as a guide for the plunger. From the lower end of the cylinder, the pipe 43 leads toward the upper end of the liquid pipe 2l, the latter pipe being open at its lower end and constricted at its upper end.
It will be seen that as the slide |54 is pressed inwardly against the action of the spring |51, the end |66 of said slide engages the inclined edge |61 of the cover and rotates said cover about its The 3 Claims. (Cl. 299-88) pivot |60, thereby removing the spring |65 from the aperture |64 and removing the closure screw 26 from the pipe 21. At the same time, the edge |52 is withdrawn from the recess |5| whereby the plunger |50 is released and is moved upwardly 5 by the spring 35.
It will be understood that the cover |62 is frictionally retained in its open position when moved into' said position by the slide, and that movement of the cover out of its sealing position 10 is also resisted by the spring |51 which is secured to and is virtually an extension of the slide.y This is` done by securing said cover to the shaft and depending on the friction of said shaft against the spring |57 to retain the shaft in the l5 position into which it is rotated. After the plunger has been raised under the inuence of the spring 35, said plunger may be reciprocated to perform the `atomizing operation as by means of the finger piece |66 secured thereto. It may 20 then readily be locked by moving it into its lowermost position whereupon the slide will snap into the recess |5| and lock the plunger. The cover |62 may then be rotated manually into its closed position wherein the spring snaps 25 against the edge of the aperture |64 and retains the cover in place until again released by the manual operation of the slide |54, the spring |51 aiding to resist movement of the cover.
While I have shown and described certain 30 specific embodiments of my invention, it will be understood that I do not intend to linut myself thereto but intend to claim my invention as broadly as may be permitted by the state of the prior art and the -scope of the appended claims.
I claim: y
1. In an article of the character described, a casing, atomizing means within the casing including an outwardly spring-pressed reciprocatory member operable from the exterior of the 40 casing and havinga transverse groove therein, a sealing cover arranged to seal said atomizing means and having a pivot connecting the cover to the casing, said cover having a beveled end edge in spaced relation to the pivot, a locking 45 slide in the casing having an end portion projecting therefrom outside of the casing, part of said slide entering said groove for normally locking the reciprocatory member, saidslide engaging a point of the beveled end edge of the seal- 50 ing cover in spaced relation to the pivot when said slide part is moved out of said groove to rotate the cover about said pivot into position to unseal said means and simultaneously to release the reciprocatory member.
2. In an atomizer, a casing, atomizing means within the casing including a reciprocatory pump plunger having a part thereof accessible from outside the casing and having a transverse locking groove therein, a spring urging said plunger outwardly of the casing, and a discharge pipe for atomized iiuid,l a cover pivoted to the casing and having an end thereon, a plug carried by the cover in position to seal said pipe, a. spring latch carried by the cover and normally engaging the casing, a plunger-locking and coveropening slide carried by and accessible from outside the casing and having an end thereon, said end engaging the end of the cover when the slide is moved to swing said cover about its pivot, and a spring normally urging the slide into the groove of said plunger to lock the plunger, said plunger being unlocked on the cover-opening movement of the slide.
3. In an atomizer, a casing, means for atomi'zing fluid within the casing, said atomizing means including a reciprocatory air-pump piston-plunger, said plunger having a transverse -groove therein, a spring urging said plunger in one direction and out of the casing, said plunger being manually operable in the other direction against the action of the spring to produce a stream of fluid-atomizing air, and a. discharge pipe, a cover having a pivot hinging the cover to the casing and having means thereon for sealing said discharge pipe, said cover having an inner end within the casing, spring means on said cover arranged to frictionally engage the casing to maintain said cover normally in pipe sealing position, said spring means, on disengagement from the'casing. releasing said cover for swinging movement about its pivot, a manually' operable spring-pressed plunger-locking and cover-opening slide mounted for manual reciprocatory movement transversely of the casing and arranged with the larger part thereof inside of the casing, said slide having an opening therein through which the plunger is slidably passed, the wall of the slide adjacent said opening entering the groove of the plunger when said slide is moved in one direction, the inner end of the slide being arranged adjacent the inner end of the cover and below the pivot o! the cover, said inner end of the slide engaging said inner end of the cover on movement of the slide in the other direction and on said movement swinging the cover about its pivot and first releasing the spring means from the casing and then opening the cover while simultaneously withdrawing the slide from the groove o1' the plunger and freeing the plunger for movement out o! the casing by said first-mentioned spring.
