Patented Nov. 24, 1936 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE Ohio,
assignors to The McBec Company,
Athens, Ohio, a corporation of Ohio Application July 9, 1935, Serial No. 30,428
'1 Claims. (Cl..1291) Our invention relates to peg bars such as are described in the application, Serial No. 10,131, filed March 9, 1935, and relates more specifically to the multiple post bars, which are used on such boards to conveniently support the sheets of paper, which for the convenience and visibility are generally arranged in shingled relation.
In structures of this kind, when the sheets of paper are moved from the peg board, they must be separately filed, and then when again wanted for use on the peg board must be rearranged in the required position.
The principal object of our invention is to provide members for holding the sheets so that the entire number of sheets may be removed simultaneously from the loose leaf hinder or file back to a peg bar, without disturbing the arrangement of the leaves in the manner to avoid the present laborious method of handling the sheets one at a time which is required with the use of the peg boards at present employed.
A further object of our invention is to provide means which will permit of the quick transfer of the sheets from one loose leaf binder to another, without disturbing the overlapped or shingled arrangement of the sheets.
A further object of our invention is to provide means which will facilitate the transferring of one set of records from one location to another Without having to transfer the entire loose leaf binder or file and yet at the same time will hold the sheets in their prearranged order.
A further object is to provide a multiple post transfer device comprising an upper bar and lower bar which when manually held at both ends may be attached (or detached) one to the other without removing the hands.
Our means of accomplishing the foregoing objects may be more readily understood by having reference to the accompanying drawings which are hereunto annexed and are a part of this specifieation, in which- Fig. 1 is a fragmentary plan view of an assembled leaf inserter or transfer device and loose leaf binder;
Fig. 2 is a similar view with the upper clamping means removed;
Fig. 3 shows the assembled transfer device removed from the binder;
Figs. 4 and 5 are detail views of the bottom bar;
Figs. 6 and 7 are detail views of the top bar;
Fig. 8 is a view of the assembled bars;
Fig. 9 is an enlarged detail view partly in sec-' tion, showing a fastening device for the two bars of the transfer device;
,Fig. 10 is. an end elevation showing the hinge and prong arrangement of loose leaf binders to which our invention is applied as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2; and
Fig. 11 is a fragmentary detail view of a modifled form of construction. Similar reference numerals refer to similar parts throughout the entire description.
As shown in Figs. 1 and 2 we have illustrated a common form of prong loose leaf binder though it will be obvious from the hereinafter contained description that our invention is not limited to any specific style or type of loose leaf binder. In these views the sheets I, which are ruled and columned to receive the desired data, are placed on the prongs 8 of the binder comprising covers 2 and hinged back sections 2, perforations 3 being formed in the sheets adjacent their upper margin.
These sheets may, for example, be records of the sales made by a particular salesman or department in which case enough sheets for a week or month, or any desired period of time, are arranged in shingled relationship from right to left, showing at the right hand margin the totals of the various entries. Then on each sheet the amounts are totaled at the bottom for each days sales. Due to the arrangement of the sheets in overlapping relation so that the right hand margins of all sheets are visible at the same time the totals may be read cross-wise and added together to ascertain the total sales for the period; also any line may be added cross-wise to determine the sales of any certain commodity. When the sheets are arranged in the loose leaf binder they are in sets, each of which is preferably separated from another by an index or dividing sheet. In this manner the records of individual salesmen may be separate. It may, for example, be desired to remove all of the sheets pertaining to an individual salesmans sales to another department or to ascertain quickly the total business done in a certain article over a period of time. This Work is done by placing the sheets on a peg board (not shown). We arrange to do this with the minimum amount of time and without disturbing the sheets in the following manner. We provide a pair of flat bars 4 and 5. The lower one 4, is provided with a plurality of upright pins 6, which are located so as to enter the holes 3 in the sheets I, when they are vacated by the row of prongs l, opposite the row of prongs B, which supports the sheets I when the binder is opened.
A plurality of slots 9, are formed in the bar 4. These slots are spaced to register with all of the prongs on one bottom section 2' of the loose leaf binder in which the sheets are bound. Preferably the slots 9 are flared as at In adjacent the upper edge of the bar ti. This makes it easy for the prongs to enter the slots when the bar is inserted under the sheets i as shown in Fig. 2.
The upper bar 5 is now placed on top of the sheets and above the bar 4 clamping the sheets between them holes 8 being provided for the reception of the pins 6 of the lower bar. Pins l l and H are provided in the lower bar. These pins are fitted to holes 53 and i4 formed in the top bar. Holes 9' which register with the slots 9 must be provided in the top bar for the entrance of the prongs 8 thus insuring alinement as the prongs will pass through both bars. It may be found desirable to provide the construction shown in Fig. 11 in which event the holes 9' are not re-; quired. Where this is done the construction shown in Fig. ii is employed in which pins 20 are mounted in the lower bar d. Each of these pins 23 is provided with a head 23 contacting the under surface of the top bar when it is placed on the lower bar. This operates to space the two bars so as to permit the entrance of prongs 8 through the slots 9. The two bars, *1 and 5 are detachably secured together in any suitable manner. We have shown a type of spring snap button consisting of a plunger i6 and a socket I! such as are commonly used on automobile curtains and the like. They release with a slight pressure upon the plunger it. The lower bar is preferably counter-bored as at IE to permit mounting the fastener without any part thereof projecting beyond the plane of the surface of the lower bar.
This is most desirable due to the common practice of placing the bars on a flat desk or the fiat inclined surface of a peg board on which the bars slide. If desired the ends 22 and 23 may be bent upwardly'as clearly seen in Figs. 7, 8 and 9 to assist in the convenient separation of the two bars.
It will be clear from the foregoing description that when thepapers are clamped between the bars 4 and 5 that the entire set of sheets containing the records pertaining to any individual or commodity, may be removed from and replaced in the loose leaf binder without disarrangement of the sheets. Although we have described with some degree of particularity specific details of construction, it is to be understood that it is done only for illustrative purposes and to show a concrete embodiment of our invention. However, we do not wish to be understood as limiting ourselves to such specific details except as such limitation appears in the hereinafter contained claims.
Having described our invention what we regard as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:--
