COMBINATION SCHOOL DESK AND CHAIR Filed June a, 1955 I Zgw i 2 Shets-Sheet 2 ATTORNEY Patented Nov. 17, 1936 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIE 3 Claims.
The invention relates to schoolroom furniture and more especially to an adjustable combination school desk and chair.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a unit of this character, wherein the same is made from an iron frame, with a steel base and a galvanized book box, these being practically indestructible, and when necessary these parts can be repaired at a minimum expense, the
unit being light and susceptible of being maintained sanitary and in a hygienic condition.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a unit of this character, wherein both the desk and chair have a maximum range of adjustment,
so that the unit isadaptable for use by children of varying sizes and is portable and readily and quickly knocked down for transportation, as well as being capable of erection with dispatch and without the necessity of skilled labor.
2 A further object of the invention is the provision of a unit of this character, wherein the same is of a construction as to allow the placing thereof within a classroom of a school to assure the most favorable light conditions without extravagant 5 use of space, the unit being easily assembled and adjusted by one teacher aided by a pupil, there being but a single wrench required for the adjustment of the unit, and such unit meets all requirements for hygienic seating.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a unit of this character, wherein the seat proper is ventilated to add to comfort when occupied, the unit being in its entirety of novel construction.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a unit of this character which is comparatively simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and efficient in its purposes, strong, durable,
and inexpensive to manufacture and install.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described in detail, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which dis- 45 close the preferred embodiment of the invention, and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a unit constructed in accordance with the. invention.
Figure 2 is a front elevation thereof.
Figure 3 is a rear elevation.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary vertical transverse sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 1 showing in detail the manner of adjustment.
Figure 5 is a fragmentary vertical transverse sectional view through the desk of the unit, showing the range of adjustment thereof.
Figure 6 is a side elevation of those parts shown in Figure 5.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawings.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the unit comprises a desk, designated generally at A, and a seat or chair designated generally at B, respectively. The unit includes a pair of spaced parallel base rails l0, each in the form of L irons and. adapted to rest upon a foundation or flooring in the setting up of the unit and from which rise the desk A and seat or chair 13, these being spaced the desired distance from each other as required.
The desk A comprises a pair of end uprights in the form of iron frames H providing in their upper portions guideways I2 accommodating adjustable end brackets [3, these being slidably fitted in said uprights and carrying the desk top l4. At the underside of the desk top 14 is a pair of strips l5 which carry bolts I6 adapted for the adjustment of the top with relation to the toppiece I! of each bracket l3. Confined in each bracket is a vertically slotted filler block I8, preferably of wood, the slot IQ of which is located centrally of the said block and receives a bolt 2| carried by a cross piece 22 of each upright ll. Thus it will be seen that the desk is susceptible of vertical adjustment and the top l4 thereof has the proper directional inclination to meet the requirements of the user of the desk for writing purposes.
Suspended from the underside of the top l4 of the deskA is abook box 23, it being made from sheet metal and conventionally constructed for accommodating books or other accessories usable by pupils in a classroom.
Connected with the uprights l I at the front side of the desk are cross braces 24, these being preferably bolted, as at 25, so that the desk A may be knocked down or set up in a convenient manner and when knocked down can be transported by occupying minimum space. Supplementing the cross pieces 22 of the uprights I l are the cross pieces 26, these being near the upper ends of said uprights and at the outer sides thereof, while the cross pieces 22 are at the inner sides of said uprights and the brackets l3 slide between said cross pieces.
The seat or chair B of the unit includes the side frames 21, each being fitted with a filler piece 28, preferably made from wood, and carried by said. side frames 21 is a back rest 29, it having 33 for ventilating purposes, and at the underside of this section 32, near opposite ends, are the pairs of spaced cleats 34, *these having slots. 35 receiving bolts 36 which are selectively received.
in holes or openings 31 spaced from each other and disposed in diagonal rows'in'the :fillenpieces 28. can be adjusted in a horizontal plane by manipulation of the bolts 35 and'also in a vertical direction on selectivelyfi-tting .the.-.bolts.36 inthe holes or openings 31in the filler pieces .28 as carried by the side frames 21. and the-frames 2 have' unity with each other through connecting strips-.38, these being riveted to the base rails l0, while the said uprights and side frames 21 at meetingpoints with the said base rails I Oiare welded or otherwise united with each other,-the uprightsrl i being strengthened or reinforced by the diagonal braces 39-within the same. The seat section 32 .at an-intermediate point thereof carriesa brace 40 secured between the seat and the diagonal braces.
It should be obvious. that the desk A' is susceptible of vertical adjustmentto have thesame disposed with its top l4 atthe properheight' for meeting the requirements of a pupil in using such desk. Also, the .seat or chair B is susceptible of adjustment soas .to have the seat section 32 come close to or away from the desk A and also for permitting theraising and lowering of said seat section for meeting .the requirements of. the occupant thereof.
By removal of the bolts the parts of both the desk A and seat or chair B can be disassembled with dispatch so that transportation of the unit can be had in knocked-down form and to minimize occupancy of space during transportation. The unit in its construction assures proper-venti- Thus it will be seen that the seat section 32.
The uprights H -guideways:,: a1.desk top; on said end brackets,
lation and also renders the same sanitary with hygenic conditions prevailing.
As has been stated, the desk top l4 can be moved forwardly or backwardly on manipulation of the bolts l6 connecting the same to the top 5 pieces I! of the brackets 13. Each strip I5 in the side thereof next to the desk top I4 is provided with a channe or groove 4| communicating with elongated slats 42 receiving the bolts l6 and in this groove. isaccommodatednmiron clamp 10 plate 43.
What is claimed is:
.1. As an article of furniture, a pair of uprights providing at their upper ends vertical guideways, adjustable end brackets fitting said guideways, l5
. aiiesK top on said end brackets, means connecting the end brackets with the desk top for holding the latterxinforward and rearward adjustment, abook .box depending from the top between the uprights, and means for holding the end brackets 0 in vertical adjustment in the uprights.
