Description

Nov. 10, 1936. G, BENDER DUSTLESS BAG EMPTYING ATTACHMENT Filed April 27, 1935 4 INVENTOR. fdwam fiender BY ATTORNEY.
Patented Nov. 10, 1936 UNITED. STATES PATENT FFiCE DUSTLESS BAG EMPTYING ATTACHMENT Edward G. Bender, New Yoi-k, N. Y.
' Application April 27, 1935, Serial No. 18,514
' 8 Claims. (01. 285-71) an opening either at the upper end, side or lower 10 part of a bag which is provided with circumferential clamping means by which the bag, and also the open end of a second bag, may be clamped around the ring providing a hermetically sealed connection between two bags so that the contents is of one may be dumped into the other without escaping into the atmosphere. Bags of this type, and particularly vacuum cleaner bags, have been provided with closures at the upper ends which may readily be opened when it is desired to re- 20 move the dust from the bag; however, these closures only hold the end of the dust collecting bag and when another bag is slipped over the end thereof and dust dumped from one to another, there is an open space around the bag permitting the dust to escape therefrom, as there is no direct connection between the two bags. Other cleaners have been provided with vacuum bags of specially treated paper so that the air filters through the paper, leaving the dust in the bag and the entire bag is destroyed.
removing the dust or other contents from bags by forming a direct connection which positively connects one bag to another with a sealed joint.
The object of the invention is therefore to provide a coupling for clamping the ends of two bags together with one inside of the other.
Another object is to provide a coupling for connecting the ends of two bags in which the coupling may be inserted in a hem of one bag.
Another object is to provide an attachment by which the open ends of two bags may be positively connected which -.is detachable so that it may readily be removed when not in use.
A further object is to provide a coupling for clamping the open ends of two bags together in which the clamping parts clamp the ends of both bags with one over the other.
And a still further object is to provide a coupling for holding the ends of two bags together which provides a sealed connection which is of a 56 simple and economical construction.
In both cases it is necessary to break the con- With these ends in view the invention embodies an open ring, a goose neck bracket attached to said ring and clamping members positioned around the outside of said ring and hinged to said bracket, said clamping members having clamps on the open endsthereof and said ring adapted to be opened with one end slideable in a socket in the end of the other.
Other features and advantages of the m th-- 5 tion will appear from the following description taken in connection with the drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a view showing the attachment with the clamping rings partly open and with the dust bag indicated in dotted lines.
Figure 2 is a view showing a dust bag with the attachment incorporated in the open end thereof and showing the paper bag with the open end placed over the attachment as indicated in dotted lines..
Figure 3 is a cross section through the attachment with the goose neck shown in full lines.
Figure 4 is a plan view of the attachment with one side partly open.
Figure 5 is a view showing a dust bag with a paper bag held on the lower end thereof by the attachment and with a cleaning rod therein.
Figure 6 is a view showing an attachment of an alternate design in which it is formed with a tubular sleeve with clamping bands hinged to the outer surface thereof and with part broken away showing the clamping means on the opposite side thereof.
In the drawing the attachment is shown-as it may be made wherein numeral indicates the ring, numeral 2 the upper section of the goose neck, numeral 3 the lower section, numeral 4 one 'of the clamping members and numeral 5 a complimentary clamping member.
The ring lis preferably made of comparatively small round stock and it. is preferred to make this ring with an 'opening therein in which a socket Sis provided on one end into which the other end! may be inserted, as indicated by the dotted lines 8 shown in Figure 4. It willbe understood, however, that an open ring of any type may be provided and any means may be used for holding the ends together. The upper section 2 of the goose neck extends upward-from the socket 6,-as shown at point 9 of Figure 3 andthis part bends over so that the rod from which the goose neck is formed extends straightdownward with a section It) and then upward forming the section 3. The upper end of the part 3 is slightly smaller,

- bag placed therein. The parts 4 and 5 extend substantially around the ring I and the open ends 1 'are'provided with clamping means as shown in Figures 3 and 4 in which the part 4 is provided with a post I! having-a latch pivotally mounted thereon and'the part 5 is provided with a post it having a link 22 pivotally mounted thereon and it will be noted that a pin 23 shown in dotted lines in the outer end of the link 22 may be gripped and held in a socket 24 in the member 20 so that when the latch 20 is forced downward against the member 4 it will draw the two members together and clamp the end of the bag or the ends of the bags around the member I. It will be noted that the upper end of the bag may be placed around a ring i with one side of the bag extending upward into the section 2 of the goose neck as indicated by the dotted lines 25,
and then another bag may be placed over the upper end oi the former bag with the side thereof extending downward over the goose neck and into the socket in the section 3 thereof, as indicated by the dotted lines 26. The members 4 and 5 may then be brought together around the ends of the bags and clamped together by the members 2| and 22. The upper end of the bag 25 may also be provided with a hem, as shown in Figure 1 and the open end] of the ring I may be inserted in a slit in the hem-and the ring may be run around so that it is installed in the hem forming the upper edge of the bag. The end I may then be placed in the socket 6 so that the device may be installed or mounted in the upper end of the bag and this may be covered with a piece of cloth or a cap of any description that may readily be removed when it is desired to place a paper bag or other means for receiving the dust from the dust bag on the attachment.
The device may be installed in the upper end of the bag as shown in Figure 2 in which the bag is indicated by the numeral 21 and it will also be understood that bags may be provided with these devices installed in both ends or in the upper end and also at a point 28 adJacent the lower end so that a paper bag may be placed on the dust bag at the point 28 and the dust shaken into the bag without removing the bag 21 from a vacuum cleaner or the like. These devices may, therefore, be positioned at both ends of the bag or at either end or at any point therein.
In the design shown in Figure 5 the bag 21 is shown removed from the sweeper and turned up side down with a paper bag 2! on the lower end thereof and this figure illustrates that the' con-.
necting ring 3| at the lower end of a dust bag may be covered by a cap 3| to close this end of the bag and the cap may be provided with a rod 3! which may be inserted into the bag for beating the interior thereof in order tofree the dust from the walls. It may also be desirable to use a brush II onthe end of the rod 82 sothat the inner surface of'the bag may be brushed. It will be understood, however, that anyother uattachmentsmaybeusedincombinationwith this device for removing dust from dust bags or other objects or devices.
In the design shown in Figure 6 the device is formed with the tubular sleeve 34 having c1amp-' ingrings 35 and 38 pivotally mounted on the outer surface thereof with a hinge member 31 and the open ends of the bands 35 and it are provided with clamping means in which a latch 38 is pivotally attached to the end of one section of the ring by a hinge 39 and this latch is provided with an opening lfl'whlch fits over a leg or pro- Jection 4| 0n the end of the other section and by forcing the latch 38 over the projection 4| it is possible to draw the open ends of the bands SI and 36 together to clamp objects on the suriace to the member 34.
It will be understood that other changes may be made in the construction without departing from the spirit of the invention. One of which changes may be in the use of material of any shape instead of. the round stock shown in Figures 1 to 4; another may be in the use of other means for supporting the members instead of using the goose neck and another may be in the use of any other means for hinging the clamping parts at one side of the ring.
' The construction will be readily understood from the foregoing description. In use the device is provided, preferably, as shown in Figure 1 and the ring I may be placed inside of the upper end of a bag or in the hem thereof and another bag placed over the ring and clamped thereto as hereinbefore described. The bag may then be inverted and as it is beaten or shaken, dust therefrom will pass into a secondary bag. This will make it possible for any one using a vacuum cleaner to readily remove the dust from the dust bag by placing a common paper bag, in which groceries or the like have been carried home, with the open end over the ring and clamping it in place. It also makes it possible for anyone to thoroughly clean a dust bag of a vacuum cleaner without permitting dust to escape to the atmosphere so that these bags may be cleaned in the home without danger of the dust escaping.
It will also be understood that although this attachment has been shown and described as adapted for use with vacuum cleaners, it may also be used for any other purpose and with bags of any other type or description.
Furthermore it will be understood that this device may be used on the opening in the lower end of the dust bag of a vacuum cleaner which connects to the discharge of the cleaner, and may be provided as a separate unit or combined with the collar 30, shown on the lower end of the bag in Figure 2, in which case the opening in the .upper end of the bag and also in the side may be omitted.
' This device may also be used to hold a cover, 1 formed of a sheet of material, over the opening,
in the upper end of the bag, shown in Figure 2, or a cap, cover, or closure of any description may be used over the device to close the upper end of the bag. The paper bag or container, which is indicated by the numeral 29, and which may also comprising a ring adapted to be insertedin the open end of the bag with a holding member attached to one side, the holding member extending upward therefrom and then extending downward beyond the ring, forming a socket, and then extending upward forming an oppositely positioned socket and clamping means around said ring.
