Description
P. HAUERSPERGER. Founder Washing-Machine.
No. 205,959. Patented July 16. 1878.
INVENTOR ATTORNEY UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
PETER HAUERSPERGER, OF HOMER, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO B. H. TOWNER, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN POUNDER WASHING-MACHINES.
Q Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 205,959, dated July 16, 1878; application filed March 19, 1878.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, PETER HAUERSPERGER, of Homer, in the county of Ohampaign and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pounder Washing-Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in pounder washing-machines; and consists in a construction as follows: Two plunger-rods connect with a single lever, respectively, on both sides of a supporting upright, and operate box-plungers secured to the lower extremities of each of the rods. A shoulder is formed 011 the lower body of the central upright, and in single piece therewith, which has vertical bearing upon a guide-bar, which latter rests upon a cross-bar, said cross-bar being made with semicircular formations on both longitudinal sides thereof. Tie-rods formed with hooked lower extremities connect this supporting cross-bar with the tub by means of key-wedges, which engage the respective upper looped extremities of said rods, and permit the entire apparatus to be readily attached to and detached from any ordinary wash-tub. The central upright is adapted to be partially rotated, carrying with it the lever, the plungers, and the guide-bar, so that the box-pounders may be brought into diiferent vertical positions over the tub, and thus be caused to operate upon all the clothes.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view, in perspective, of the invention as applied to a washtub. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the machine detached from the tub, and showing one of the box-plungers in section.
The actuating-lever A connects with the two plunger-rods B on each respective side of the central upright O, to each of which it is connected by a pin engaging with a vertical series-of holes formed in said rods and upright.
The hox-plungers D are each provided with an upwardly-closing valve, 11, secured to the reverse side of the top of the plunger, and adapted to allow the valve to automatically open on the upstroke of the latter, while the valve is closed on the downstroke of the plunger, and the air inclosed within the same is confined and compressed.
A spiral spring, E, is also secured in each of said box-plungers, and serves to provide a cushioned bearing for the latter in the operation of washing.
The central supporting-upright C is formed with a shoulder, c, in single piece therewith, which has vertical bearings upon a bar, F. This latter bar serves as a lateral guide to the plunger-rods as the same pass through suitable working-slots in the extremities thereof.
The cross-bar G supports the entire appa ratus, and upon this the guide-bar F has vertical bearing. In order to provide suitable bearing for said guide-bar, the semicircular lateral extensions 9 are formed on both longitudinal sides of the cross-bar, in the central portion thereof. The extremities of the crossbar are provided with the oblong slots h, in which the tie-rods H, respectively, are supported. The lower extremities of these rods are formed with the upright hooked projections l, which engage with the lower rim L of a wash-tub. The upper loops m of the rods, in connection with the key-wedges M, lock the said rods securely to the tub after the hooked extremities l are engaged with its lower rim, and by this means the machine may be readily applied to any ordinary wash-tub without providing the latter with any connecting attachments.
The oblong form of the slots h, in connection with the peculiar adaptation of the tie-rods, allow the latter to be swung in or out, thus permitting them to be connected with different-sized tubs.
In order to allow the plungers to be operated in different vertical planes, so as to cause all the clothes to be washed by direct pounding action, the central upright is adapt ed to be partially rotated, carrying with it the actuating-lever, the two plungers, and the guide-bar F. The pin 0, which loosely secures the upright G to the supporting cross-bar G allows the said uprights to be rotated par tially; and the guide-bar F, interposed between cross-bar (l and the shoulder e of the upright, has sliding bearing upon said crossbar.
I am aware that heretofore a washing-machine has been made having two plungers, the lower portions of the shafts of said plungers being connected together by a cross-bar, which is pivoted to each of the shafts and to the central upright, which latter is the supportingfulcrum for the actuating-lever, said upright having axial rotation and earryin g the plungersha-fts with it.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The couibination, with upright (,torined with annular shoulder c, and cross-bar (l, formed with semicircular extensions g, of
guidebar I, fitted between said shoulder and crossbar, and pounder-shafts B, passing freely through openings in the guide-bar, said guidebar being located above the level of the water and not pivoted to either the upright or the pounder-shatts, substantially as set forth.
2. In a lever-pounder washing-machine, the combination, with the supporting cross-bar, of the tie-rods formed with hooked extremities to engage with the chine of a wash-tub, the upper looped ends of said tie-rods passing through oblong slots made in the cross-bar, and adjustably locked therein by the engagement ot' key-wedges therewith, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 11th day of March, 1878.
PETER HAUERSIERGER.
