Description

Oct. 27, 1936.
B. BUSH ET AL AMUSEMENT DEVICE Filed Oct. 17, 1934 ATTORNEYS Patented Oct. 27, 1936 UNITED STATES AMUSEMENT DEVICE Bernard Bush, Bronx, and Benjamin Wolk, New York, N. Y.
Application October 17, 1934, Serial No. 748,636
2 Claims.
This invention relates generally to devices for the amusement of adults and children which may be either sold or given away as an advertising medium.
Broadly, the device embodies a sheet of material or equivalent element which is of such a nature or character that it is capable of being stretched only along one of its axes from a normally contracted condition, and which sheet or element bears a picture and or other indicia which is applied thereto in such a manner that the picture, if prior to the'stretching of the sheet, is originally disclosed as distorted, will, when the sheet is stretched, be' displayed as normal, or if originally disclosed as normal when the sheet is contracted, will, when the sheet is stretched, be displayed as distorted.
More particularly the invention resides in an amusement device of the indicated character which includes a sheet of crepe paper which in one of its forms has applied thereto, a picture and/or other indicia which is disclosed as distorted when the crepe paper is in its unstretched creped condition and which picture and/ or indicia will, when the paper is stretched, be displayed as normal.
The invention further resides in the provision of a device of the character set forth, which is extremely simple and inexpensive, but which is highly amusing and attractive.
With the above enumerated and other objects in view, reference is now made to the following specification and accompanying drawing in which there is set forth, by way of example one embodiment of the invention, while the appended claims cover variations and modifications thereof which fall within the scope of the invention.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a face view of the amusement device illustrating the same normally contracted with the picture displayed in a distorted form.
Fig. 2 is a similar view thereof in a stretched condition with the picture displayed in its normal form.
Referring to the drawing by characters of reference, the amusement device may consist of a single sheet 5 or a plurality of sheets bound in book form, which are of such a nature or character that they are capable of being stretched only in the direction of one of their axes, so as to increase the size of each sheet in the direction of its opposite side edge 6 and the distance between the upper and lower edges 1 and 8.
While the sheet 5 may be made of any other equivalent material, the same is preferably, as herein disclosed, of crepe paper, and in the instant embodiment, a picture 9 or other equivalent indicia is applied thereto in such a manner that the same is displayed in a distorted form when the sheet is in the normal contracted condition shown in Fig. l and which picture or indicia 9 is adapted to be stretched coincident with and by the sheet 5 so as to be displayed in a normal or undistorted condition as shown in Fig. 2. The manner in which the picture or indicia 9 is applied may vary, but for the purpose of the present disclosure, the picture or indicia 9 is printed on the sheet 5 prior to the creping of the same. The picture or indicia 9, may also be applied to the sheet 5, in an originally distorted form, after the same is creped, so that in either instance the picture or indicia will be displayed in a normal undistorted form when the sheet is stretched to the condition shown in Fig. 2.
Within the scope of the invention, the sheet 5 may be made .of a material which, in addition 20 to being expansible in the direction of one of its axes only, is also inherently contractile in said direction after the sheet is expanded, so that the picture or indicia 9 will be returned to and will be displayed in its distorted condition upon the contraction of the sheet. When material of this nature is used, the picture or indicia will be printed or applied to the sheet when it is in an expanded condition and the inherent contractile nature thereof will cause the picture to be normally displayed in a distorted form when the sheet is contracted.
It thus follows that the device may be used to repeatedly display the picture or indicia in its distorted and undistorted forms.
What is claimed is:
1. An amusement device including a sheet of stretchable inelastic material normally in a contracted condition and stretchable on one axis only to an expanded condition, and indicia on said sheet adapted to be displayed in a distorted form in one condition of the sheet and adapted tobe displayed in a normal form in the other condition of the sheet.
2. An amusement device including a base bearing indicia on one surface thereof, said base consisting of a sheet of crepe paper having the indicia applied to the surface thereof prior to the creping of the sheet so as to be displayed in a distorted condition in the direction of the stretch of the paper and adapted to stretch with said sheet so as to be displayed in an undistorted condition when the sheet is stretched.
