Description

0. M. ARTHUR. Paper-Box.
Patented July 2 I878.
I N. PETERS, PHOTO-LITHOQRAPMQR. WASHINGTON '7. c.
nrrnn STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES M. ARTHUR, OF ANSONIA, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO RICHARD H. COLBURN, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN PAPER BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 205,603, dated July 2, 1878; application filed April 30, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHAS. M. ARTHUR, of Ansonia, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Paper Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in-
Figure 1, a perspective view; Fig. 2, a diagram illustrating the method of cutting the blank.
This invention relates to an improvement in that class of paper boxes which are comp1ete-ends, sides, bottom, and top-all in one piece and it consists in the blank of the form hereinafter described, and whereby the last closed end may be locked so as to prevent accidental opening.
The blank is cut from a sheet of paper and of a size according to the use for which the box is intended, and as shown in the diagram, Fig. 2, in which the part A, inclosed by broken lines, represents one side; B, the opposite side;
C, the second side, between A and B; and D, the side opposite C, the side D having a flap, E, on its edge, which will lap onto the side A when the blank is folded, and serve as a means for securing the side A to the side D. The two sides A and B have extensions or flaps F at their ends, which, when the blank is folded, will turn down toward each other, forming an inner flap or lining for the two ends. The sides C and D have each extensions, respectively, 0 and D, and on one edge (the same) of each of the extensions C D a notch, a, is cut, of substantially V shape, extending about midway of the width of the said sides C D.
\Yhen the blank is folded and the flaps F F turned in, then the extension C of one side and 'D of the other side are turned inward, and the V-shaped notch of one interlocked with the V-shaped notch of the other, as seen in Fig. 1. The outer point d of each tucks under the opposite inclined edge of the other part, and, as seen in broken lines, Fig. 1, this prevents accidental opening of the end, and avoids the use of paste or other applied attachments. The other end is secured in like manner.
The box is opened by turning the notches of one end from each other, as indicated in Fig. 3.
As this method of attachment is only positively required for one endthat is, the end that is to be openedthe opposite end may be secured without the said notchesas, for instance, lapping the ends and pasting, or otherwise, or other known devices for closing that end.
In the patent granted to this applicant, May 15, 1877, No. 190,803, a box of an entirely different character is shown, but with the ends out so as to lock the one over the other. In this application it is, therefore, to be understood that no claim is made to anything shown or described in the said patent.
1 claim The herein-described paper box, constructed from a blank having the sides A C B D in a continuous piece, and the two sides C D each constructed, respectively, with a projection, C D, at one or both ends, and the said projections having a V-shaped notch, a, cut in the corresponding edge, substantially as described.
CHARLES M. ARTHUR.
