Description

Sept. 29, 1936. F. H. MILLER VEGETABLE CUTTER Filed June 11, 1934 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Frederic, H'MiI/er allow-L a4;
Patented Sept. 29, 1936 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIE 3 Claims.
The device relates to vegetable cutters and more particularly to a device for slicing potatoes for shoe string or French fries.
The invention has for its primary object to provide a simple and effective device which is economical to manufacture.
Another object of this invention is to provide a device which is so simple in construction that it requires very little care and is easy to clean.
Still another object of the device is to provide a machine which will take various sizes of vegetables and which is so constructed that the feeding in of the potatoes or other vegetables involves no danger to the operator.
With the above and other objects in view that will hereafter appear the invention further resides in the novel details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, all of which will be first fully described, then be particularly pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device.
Figure 2 is a plan View of the invention.
Figure 3 is a vertical longitudinal section illustrating the invention.
Figure l is a cross section taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 3.
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the outer members of the carriage.
Figure 6 is a perspective View of the inner member of the carriage.
Figure 7 is a perspective view of the U-shaped presser.
Figure 8 is a detailed section taken on the line 8-4 of Figure 4.
Figure 9 is a perspective view of the support for the cutter disc axle showing the keyway.
Figure 10 is a perspective view of the key which looks in the cutter disc axle.
In the drawings, in which like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all of the figures, I indicates the base which has sides upturned as at 2 and curled at 3 to form a track.
The base [I is pressed out at 4 to provide the recess 5 which contains the cutting blade 6, said cutting blade 6 being held at the desired level by a turned up portion 8 in the base I and the said cutting blade 6 is securely held in place by the screws 38.
The base l is equipped with legs 9 which are attached at it? thereto.
The rod l3 which holds the cutter disc I6 is threaded at M to receive the nuts 15 which hold the cutter disc firmly between the spacers H.
The outer member of the carriage is composed of an end wall l8 having a bulge l9 and spring side walls 20 with slide grooves 2| which run on the curled edges 3.
The inner member of the carriage has an end wall 22 with a bulge 23 and spring side walls 25 grooved at 25.
The U-shaped presser 26 has a bulge 21, side walls 28 and flanges 29. The numeral 3| indicates a potato.
The support which holds the cutter disc has a keyway 32 to receive the key 33 which holds in place the cutter disc bearing rod 03. The cutter disc bearing rod may be easily removed through the slot 34 when the key is first taken out.
The spring side walls 24 are punched out at 35 to form the flanges 36 which are slidable in the slits 31.
It is to be understood that my vegetable cutter is adaptable for cutting a variety of sizes of slices as well as the ordinary sizes and to cut other vegetables as well as potatoes.
When it is desirable to change the size of the cut the cutter disc may be removed and another differently spaced cutter disc substituted. This is easily accomplished by merely drawing out the key 33 which holds the cutter disc axle in place.
It is obvious that when the carriage holding a vegetable is drawn across the cutter disc 16 the unit will cut equidistantly spaced vertical kerfs in the vegetable and substantially simultaneously the cutting blade 6 will traverse the kerfs made by the cutting disc l6 and sever the lower portion of the vegetable into a plurality of long slices.
The danger that ordinarily accompanies the use of a device of this kind is overcome by providing a feeder which has a bulge that forms itself to the contour of the vegetable and is operated by the pressure of the operators hand.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it is thought the construction, operation and utility of the invention will be clear to those skilled in the art and I wish it understood that changes in the details of construction may readily be made without departing from the invention.
What I claim is:
1. In a device of the class described, a troughlike base, a cutting blade inserted therein, a series of cutting discs rotatably mounted in an opening in said base and spaced part, said discs and blade serving to perform vertical and horizontal slicing operations substantially simultaneously, said trough-like base having longitudinally curled portions to form a track, a carriage composed of two grooved sections, said carriage comprising two U-shaped members held in sliding engagement with one another and with said base by friction, said carriage operatively slidable on the base track and held thereon by friction, a U-shaped feeder member cooperating with the carriage having flanged sides and concave bottom so as to allow the safe feeding of the vegetable by the operator.
2. In a device of the class described, a troughlike base having a transverse slot in its bottom, a multiple disc cutter mounted under said base with the discs projecting through said slot, to out a vegetable into vertical longitudinal sections, a blade carried by the base and projecting through said slot into cooperation with said disc cutter to slice the vegetable horizontally, slotted bearing members carried by said base, said disc cutter having a shaft whose ends are located in the slots of said bearing members, a cross key in each bearing member to retain said shaft in said bearing members, and a vegetable carriage slidably mounted in said trough-like base over said cutters, said carriage comprising two U-shaped members held in sliding engagement with one another and with said base by friction.
3. In a device of the class described, a troughlike base, a vertical slicing cutter and a horizontal slicing cutter mounted in an opening in the trough, a vegetable carriage slidably mounted in said base for being moved past said cutters, a vegetable feeder cooperating with said carriage, said carriage comprising two telescopic members in virtue of which its capacity may be varied, said base having longitudinal guideways for said feeder, said telescopic members having longitudinal recesses to receive said guide members, one of said telescopic members being slotted and the other telescopic member having tongues to enter the slots in virtue of which said telescopic members may be moved to elongate or contract said feeder without disconnecting the telescopic members one from the other.
