Description

BLACKBURN Preserve Jar and Can.
No 205,469. Patented July 2, 1878.
05 ae/lr file 27 I HENRY BLACKBURN, OF NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE.
IMPROVEMENT. IN PRESERVE JARS AND CANS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No.
205.469, dated July '2, 1878; application filed April 26, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY BLACKBURN, of Nashville, in the county otDavidson and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Jars and Cans for the Preservation of Fruit, Fish, Meat, Vegetables, &c., which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawing, in which Figure l is a front view. Fig. 2 is a front view of the cap B. Fig. 3 is a sectional view. Fig. 4 is a top view of the plug D.
The object of my invention is to furnish a device by which fruit, tish, meat, vegetables, &c., can be preserved.
A is a jar or can, of usual shape. B is a cap, made of rubber or other elastic material impervious to air. D is a plug, made of wood, cork, or other solid material.
The manner of use is as follows: Place fruit or what you wish to preserve in the jar or can, adding thereto a little water; then insert the plug 1) and place on cap B, as shown in Fig. 3; then place the jar or can in boiling liquid until steam is seen to issue from the small opening through 0 and E, as shown in Fig. 3,
and while steam is issuing tie a string or its equivalent around the cap B at the top, and just below the bulb, which is intended to prevent the string or its equivalent from slipping 01f. The inside of the jar or can has been subjected to a temperature sufficient to destroy any organic life that was therein. The steam has driven the air out of the jar or can, and the tying of the cap prevents it from returning. When the steam is condensed, the cap B is prevented, by means of the plug D, from being driven Within the jar or can by the pressure of the air.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, with a preserving-vessel, of an apertured plug and an elastic cap provided with a venting-aperture, and adapted to hermetically close the jar and to retain the tying device, as and for the purposes set forth.
HENRY BLACKBURN. Witnesses:
EDWARD TRABUE, HENRY I. MIFFLIN.
