Claims.
My invention relates to improvements in spraying devices for dampening clothes, and it consists of the combinations, constructions and arrangements hereinafter described and claimed.
An object of my invention is to provide a spraying device for dampening clothes which may be connected to a water hydrant and which has the small outlet opening for ejecting a small stream of water. This outlet opening is normally closed by an external stopper which in turn is carried by a lever or thumb trigger. A spring is used for keeping thestopper in closed position, and the thumb trigger has a spray tip disposed at its end, and this tip is brought into registration with the ejected fluid for forming the small stream of fluid into a spray. Stops are carried by the device, and limit the movement of the thumb trigger or lever into open position. The operator, therefore, in using the device merely depresses the thumb trigger until it strikes the stops, and then the spray tip is in a position to deflect the Water issuing from the small discharge opening or jet.
The device is extremely simple in construction and permits the operator to use one hand in arranging the clothes, while using the other hand for controlling the spraying device.
Other objects and advantages will appear in the following specification, and the novel features of the device will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application, in Which Figure 1 is a vertical section along line l-l of Figure 2;
Figure 2 is a rear elevation of the device;
Figure 3 is a section along the line 3--3 of Figure 1;
Figure 4 is a top plan view of the device; and
Figure 5 is an enlarged detail view of the spray tip.
In carrying out my invention I provide a hollow cylindrical body I that has a reduced end 2 for receiving the end of a hose 3. If desired the outer surface of the end 2 may be corrugated as at 4 to insure a perfect joining of the hose 3 with the hollow body I. The hose 3 leads to a water outlet not shown.
The other end of the hollow body I is threade at 5, and receives a cap 6 that is provided with a conical end 1 and a small discharge opening or jet 8. The cap 6 is screwed onto the body I and has integral lugs 9 that pivotally carry a thumb trigger or lever In. Figure 3 shows the lugs 9 carrying a pin II, and this pin has a torsional spring I2 wrapped therearound, one end of the spring bearing against the cap 6 while the other end bears against the lever Ill. The lever has ears l3 provided with openings for rotatably receiving the pin II, and in this way the lever is pivotally secured to the cap 6 and is urged in a counter-clockwise direction by the spring l2 when looking at Figure 1.
The lever carries a rubber stopper l4 and-this stopper is inserted through an opening IS in the lever andj s held in place by a portion it of the lever that is struck up and bent back upon itself to engage with the top of the stopper as shown in Figure 1. The lever is provided with a spray tip I! disposed adjacent to the stopper l4, and the shape of this spray tip I1 is shown in Figure 5. The other end of the lever is broadened as at 3, and is designed to be actuated by the thumb of the operator. The lugs 9 not only perform the function of pivotally supporting the lever l0 but perform the additional function of acting as stops for the movement of the thumb trigger l0. In Figure 1 I show the dotted line position of the thumb trigger after it has been moved manually. It will be noted that when the portion I8 abuts the edges of the lugs 9 the spray tip ll will be in alignment with the jet of water issuing from the small opening I8. The water will be deflected by the spray tip in the manner shown at [9, and this water will be sprayed so as to uniformly dampen the clothes.
From the foregoing description of the various parts of the device the operation thereof may be readily understood.
As already stated the device may be attached to any water outlet, such as a water faucet. The stopper l4 normally seals the opening 8 and prevents any water discharge. The operator in using the device grasps the hollow body I with the hand, and with the thumb of the same hand depresses the thumb trigger or lever l8 into the dotted line position. This will remove the stopper [4 from the opening 8, and will position the spray tip I! in alignment with the jet of Water issuing from the opening. The result will be that the spray tip will deflect the water as shown at I9 in Figure 5, and will break up the water jet into a fine spray. The device may be guided over the clothes, and the operator may use the free hand for arranging the clothes so that a uniform dampening will result. At the completion of the operation the operator merely frees the lever Ill and the spring l2 will instantly close the openof my invention, it should be understood that various changes or modifications may be made within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.
I claim:
1. A spraying device for dampening clothes comprising a hollow body provided with a small discharge opening, a spring-actuated and manually controlled lever pivoted to the body and carryin'g a stopper normally closing the opening, a
spray tip integral with the lever, and means for stopping further manual swinging of the lever when the'spray tip is in line with the fluid discharged from the opening whereby the fluid is sprayed. 1
2. A spraying 'device for dampening clothes comprising a hollow body connected with the source of fluid, a cap closing one end of the body and having an outlet opening therein, lugs integral with the cap, a lever pivoted to the lugs, a stopper carried 'by the lever, a spring for swinging the lever for causing the stopper to close the opening, a spray tip disposed at one end of the lever, said lever when manually depressed positioning the spray tip in alignment with the jet of fluid issuing from the opening when the lever abuts the lugs.
3. In a spraying device for dampening clothes, a hollow body with a fluid outlet opening, a lever pivoted to the body, a stopper carried by the lever for normally closing the opening, and a spray tip formed at the end of the lever and being swingable into the path of the fluid issuing from the opening, for spraying the fluid, spring means for yieldingly holding the lever in a position where the stopper will cover the opening, and a stop for positioning the spray tip in alignment with the fluid when the lever is manually moved into abutting relation with the stop.
4. In a spraying device for dampening clothes, a, hollow body provided with an outlet opening, lugs carried by the body, a lever pivotally carried by the lugs, a stopper carried by the lever, and a spray tip formed at the end of the lever, said lugs acting as a stop for preventing further movement of the lever after the spray tip is brought into alignment with the opening.
5. In a. spraying device for dampening clothes,
a hollow body with a fluid outlet opening, a. lever pivoted to the body, a resilient stopper carried by the lever for normally closing the opening, and a spray tip formed integral with the lever and being swingable into the path of the fluid issuing from the opening, for spraying the fluid.
