j IMPROVEMENT IN PACKING-BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters '.l:"atentNo. 205,113, dated June 25, 1878; applicationiled June .1, 1878.
To all lwhom it may concer/n.:
Be it known that I, IsrDoE POPPER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Packing-Boxes, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing,
v in whichlwith a packing-box, of locking-bolts, each provided with a finger-piece at one and with a hook at the opposite end, recesses formed in the inner surface of the sides and ends of thc box, and metal plates fastened over said recesses and provided with slots to engage with the hooks of the locking-bolts, said lockingbolts being made to pass through elongated holes in the cover of the box and through washers placed over said elongated holes, so that by turning the locking-bolts in one direction the cover is released, and vice versa, and that the cover can be fastened or unfastened with little loss of time and without injuring the box; further, in the combination, with the ends or sides and with the hinged sides or ends, of a hook-brace to steady the sides when the ends are thrown open, or the ends when the sides are thrown open.
Inl many cases itis desirable to get free access to the contents of a packing-box without destroying the box or without removing the contentsfor instance, in boxes filled with tobacco. If a customer desires to examine the tobacco contained in an ordinary packing-box the lid or cover has to be removed7 and in order to get access to the bottom layers of tobacco in the box the top layers have to be pulled out, and by repeated examinations of this kind the tobacco is liable to become injured and deteriorated in its market value. Furthermore, if the cover is fastened with nails or screws, the operation of unfastening and refastening the same is tedious and liable to injure the box. These disadvantages I have sought to overcome by my invention.
In the drawing, the letter A designates a box composed of the bottom a, the two sides b b, the two ends o c, and the cover d. rIhe cover is fastened by means of lockingbolts B, each of which is provided with a linger-piece, e, at one end and with a hook, f, at its opposite end. (See Fig. 3.)
In the sides and ends of the box are formed recesses g, which are covered by metall plates h, provided with slots i. The locking-bolts are passed through elongated slots in the cover into the recesses g, and by the turning the bolts their hooks engage with the slots t' in the metal plates h, and the cover is fastened.
The slots in the cover are protected by washers k. By these means the cover can be fastened and unfastened with little trouble and without injuring the box.
It is obvious that the bolts B, instead of being provided with finger-pieces, may be provided with a head either slotted to receive a screw-driver or formed to iit a screw-wrench.
The ends c c are connected to the bottom a by hin ges Z, or by any other suitable fastening, which allows the same to be removed, and they are retained at their top by latches m of any suitable construction. When the cover is taken off and the latches m are disengaged, the ends can be turned down and easy access can -be had to the contents of the box. When the ends are turned down the sides of the box are liable to beforced out. This is prevented by means of hook-braces 0, which engage with cleats p, secured to said sides. It is obvious that either the ends or the sides of the box can be made to swing open.
Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with a packing-box, of locking-bolts, each provided with a hook at one end and adapted to be turned by hand or by means of a suitable tool7 recesses formed in the inner surfaces of the sides and ends of the box, and metal plates fastened over said recesses and provided with slots to engage with the hooks of the locking-bolts, said locking-bolts being made to pass through elongated holes in the cover and through washers placed over said elongated holes, all con- In testimony that I claim the foregoing I structed and adapted to operate substantially have hereunto set my hand and seal this 29th -as and for the purpose shown and described. day of May, 1878.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a packl ing-box constructed with hinged or removable ISIDOR POPPER. [L. s] sides or ends and with a brace-rod, having hooked ends attached to and connecting the Witnesses: sides of the box, as and for the purpose de- E. F. KASTENHUBER, scribed. J. VAN SANTVOORD.
