This invention relates to safety razors and refers more particularly to portable safety razors suitable for travel, and other purposes.
An object of Vthis invention is the provision of a. safety razor which is small in size and convenient to handle. y
Another object is the provision of a safety razor comprising a handle having the form-of a container for razor blades.
A further object is the provision of a safety razor having a head portion which is adequately protected against dust and dirt while the safety razor is not in use.
The above and other objects of this invention may be realized through the provision of a safety razor comprising a hollow handle portion which may be used as a container for razor blades, the opposite end of said handle carrying a pivotally mounted head or blade support which is protected by a hollow cover while the safety razor is not being used.
The invention will appear more clearly from the following detailed description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing showing preferred 'embodiments of the inventive idea.

Figure 1 shows in side elevation a safety razor constructed in accordance with the principles of the present invention.
Figure 2 shows the safety razor with its cover removed partly in section and partly in side elevation.
Figure 3 shows the safety razor in its open position and is a section along the line 3-3 of Fig. 1 on a larger scale.
Figure 4 is a section along the line 4-4 of Fig. 3.

The safety razor illustrated in Figs. 1 to 3 of the drawing comprises a handle l2, the outer surface of which may be provided, if desired, with annular flanges 13 and M serving the purpose of improving the grip upon the handle, although obviously, a smooth, round, or flat handle may also be employed. The end portion l5 of the handle is a section along the line 5-5 of (Cl. Sil-47') has the shape of ahollow container and is provided with outer screw threads i6.
A cap l1 having inner screw threads meshing with the outer screw threads 16, is used for closing, the container l5.
As shown more clearly in Figure 4 of the drawing, the container l5 which carries the razor blades I8 (Fig. 8) is preferably provided with two flat parallel surfaces i9 and 2@ and two cylin drical surfaces 2l and 22. Due to the provision of the parallel surfaces l!) and 2El, the razor blades my be conveniently introduced into the interior of the containerv l5 and placed side by side within said container.
The opposite end 23 of the handle l2 comprises a disk-shaped ange 2li and a cylindrical end member 25 provided with screw threads 26. (Fig. 3.)
The head or the blade carrier 21 is pivotally and oscillatably mounted upon the free end 28 of a rod 29,V the opposite end of which is rmly attached to the handle I2. The rod 29 is provided with outer screw threads 33 which are formed near the end 28 of the rod 29.
A sleeve 3l is mounted upon the rod 29 and is movable upon said rod between the blade carrier 21 and the cylindrical end portion 25 of the handle l2.
The sleeve 3l is provided with inner screw threads which are adapted to engage the outer screw threads 3i) of the rod 29. When the razor is closed, the sleeve 3l is carried by the cylindrical end portion 25, as shown in Figure 2 of the drawing. When the safety razor is ready to be used, the sleeve 3| is situated in the position shown in Fig. 3, so that the head 21 is firmly held by the sleeve 3l, as will be explained in greater detail hereinafter.
The head 21 comprises a pin or pair of parallel spaced projections or lugs 32 and 33 situated on two sides of the end 28 of the rod 29. The head 21 is attached to the rod 29 by means of a pivot 3l! passing through suitable openings provided in the projection 32, th-e end 28 of the rod 29 and the projection 33.
As shown more clearly in Figs. 7 and 8 of the drawing, the lower surface 35 of the head 21 is slightly curved to enable the blade carrier 21 to be placed as closely as possible to the rod 29 when the razor is in its closed position (Fig. 2). The opposite upper surface 36 of the head 21 is flat and is used for carrying a blade I8.
The he-ad 21 is provided with the usual groove 31 and a plurality of curved teeth 38. An elongated projection 39 is provided upon the surface 36 of the head 21. A pin 42 shown in Fig. 5, is carried by the lower surface 35 of the head 21.
The blade I8 (Fig. 8) which is preferably used along with the safety razor illustrated in the drawing, comprises a single sharp edge 40 and is provided with an elongated slot 4I corresponding to the projection 39 forming a part of the head 21.
A blade retainer 43' is used for the purpose of clamping the blade I8 upon the head 21 while the safety razor is being used. The blade retainer 43 comprises a ilat middle portion 44 which is adapted to be placed over the blade I8, and two U-shaped end portions 45 and 4S forming two ends of the middle portion 44. The U-shaped end 45 of the blade retainer 43 is provided with an opening 41 for the pin 42 (Fig. 5).
As shown in Figure 5, the blade I8 is held firmly upon the head 21 by means of the blade retainer 44, the U-shaped ends 45 and 46 surrounding the edges of the blade I8 and of the head 21. Due to the provision of the pinV 42 passing through the opening 41 formed in the U-shaped end portion 45, the blade retainer 43 is prevented from shifting upon the head 21.
A cylindrical cover 48 is provided with inner screw threads adapted to mesh with the outer screw threads 26 of the handle I2. When the safety razor is not being used, the head 21 is situated parallel to the handle I2 in the position shown in Figure 2 and is covered by the cover 48 which is screwed upon the cylindrical end portion 25 of the handle I2.
In order to use the safety razor it is merely necessary to unscrew and remove the cover 48 and to swing the head 21 from the vertical position shown in Fig. 2 to the horizontal position shown in Figs. 3, 5, and 6. The sleeve 3| is shifted upon the rod 29 in the direction towards the head 21 and is screwed upon the screw threads 30. The squared end of the sleeve 3| then comes ilush against the squared ends of the lugs 32 and 33 whereby the sleeve is effective to lock the head member in the right-angle position shown in Figs. 3, 5, and 6.
Then the blade retainer 43 is temporarily removed to enable the placing of a blade I8 upon the surface 36 of the head 21. The blade I8 is clamped upon the head 21 by moving the blade retainer 43 back to the position shown in Figure 5, in which position the blade I8 is firmly held upon the head 21 by the two U-shaped ends 45 and 46 of the blade retainer 43.
In the modification shown in Fig. 9 of the drawing the head or blade support 50 which is substantially similar to the head 21 carries a blade retainer 5I which isrconnected with the head 58 by two pins 52 carried by the two side surfaces of the head 50. Only one of the pins 52 is shown in the drawing. VThe blade retainer 5I comprises a flat portion 53, two triangular side portions 54, one of which is indicated by a broken line in Fig. 9, and a resilient end portion 55 by means of which the blade retainer 5I is maintained in a raised position while a razor blade I8 is placed upon the head 50.
What is claimed is:
A safety razor comprising a head member and a handle member, Imeans associated with said head member for holding a razor blade, said head member being provided with spaced, parallel lugs having squared ends, said handle memberbeingprovidedwith a shank having its end disposed between said lugs, a pin extending through said lugs and said end for Connecting said members for pivotal movement with respect to each other whereby said head member can be placed in a position substantially parallel to or at a right angle to said shank, said shank being threaded only along the portion thereof immediately adjacent said lugs, and a sleeve disposed on said shank and threaded internally to be screwed along said shank, the end of said sleeve adjacent said lugs being squared to come flush against the squared ends'of said lugs when said head member is pla-ced at a right angle to said shank and said sleeve is screwed along said shank toward said head member whereby said sleeve is effective to lock said head member in the rightangle position thereof.
