The present invention relates to a handbag and has for an object the provision of means in order to removably attach the frame of a handbag to the pocket or the main portion thereof. A further object of the invention is to provide a handbag inwhich the main or bag portion of the handbag may be interchanged for one which has been cleaned o-r laundered or which is of a different color.

Further objects will be apparent from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:

The frame I of the handbag 2 is composed of two hinged members 3 which are made of any material, such as metal, celluloid, bakelite, ivory, and any other suitable material. These members 3 are hinged together at 4 and each is provided with a groove 5 extending along the entire underside of each member. The pocket or main portion of the bag 6 may be made of leather or any fabric such as linen, and is preferably shirred on the top edge I so as to provide a passage through which the stiff wire spring or retaining member 8 is adapted to be passed. This spring member has a bent end 9 on each end thereof and a small straight section Hi. This straight section is adapted to fit into a suitable perforation H, which is provided in each end of the grooves 5. Preferably a suitable eye member 92 surrounds each perforation H, and, as clearly seen in Fig. 3, the straight sections H] are adapted to enter into the perforations II when inserting the pocket or main portion of the handbag on to the frame. The spring wire 8, which is in the shirred top edge 7, will force this top edge snugly into the groove 5 so that the handbag, as seen in Fig. 1, will have the appearance of having the frame portion securely and permanently attached to the bag portion in accordance with the usual constructions. The appearance of the bag, therefore, is such that it cannot be suspected that the bag portion is removable and interchangeable from the frame members.

It is not essential that the material of the bag be shirred on the rod or wire 8, but a casing may be formed of the same material or additional material, which may be exactly the same size as the rod.

Any suitable looking or closing device can be applied on the frame, and in the form of the invention illustrated on the drawings a closing clip I3 is shown having one side thereof pivoted at 14 to one of the frame members 3. Also, any suitable handle or carrying means can be provided, for instance, a ring I5, which is attached in any suitable manner to the frame member.

Figs. 5 and 6 illustrate a modified construction wherein one end of the retaining members or Wires 8 is each permanently secured in the members 3. The other ends of the wires are provided with a bent end 9 and a straight section In. The sections I 0 fit into suitable perforations H in the grooves 5 similar to the construction shown in Figs. 3 and 4. The fixed ends of the wires are each provided with a bent end 9 and a ball It at the extreme end. This ball It fits permanently in a socket I! secured in the frame member 3, and as will be seen in Fig. 6 the ball I6 may have some play in the socket so that the wire can be moved out of its groove 5 when removing or replacing the bag portion.

When the bag is completely assembled, as shown in Fig. l, the wires 8 will fit snugly in the grooves 5, as illustrated in Figs. 4 and 6, except for a slight space between the wires and grooves to accommodate the material of the bag portion. Also the ends In of the wires will penetrate almost entirely into their perforations H. Due to spring action in the wires 8 the bag portion will be securely and attractively held in place.

It is, of course, obvious that if desired the frame may be interchanged for another frame having a different color or different configuration, and in this way the same bag portion is utilized.

I claim as my invention:--

1.
