DEVICE FOR CARRYING SMOKING MATERIAL, ESPECIALLY CIGARETTES Filed Nov. 15, 1933 Patented Sept. 1, 1936 llNi'i srrs PTENT QFFIE Charles Simon, Vaduz, Liechtenstein Application November 15, 1933, Serial No. 698,102 In Germany November 18, 1932 3 Claims.
The usual way of carrying about smoking material such as cigarettes consists in the use of a case containing the cigarettes, and of a separate lighting device. Both these parts are liable to be mislaid, causing a lot of annoyance.
Cigarette cases made of metal or the like are known which are combined with a lighter. It is likewise known to build a lighter in a cigarette case. The known combinations of a cigarette case with a lighter are unpractical, a great objection being that the lighter cannot be removed from the case for filling. Consequently benzine soils the case and the contents which are given a disagreeable taste and are often unfit for consumption. The rigid fitting of the lighter in the cigarette case adds to the cost of production of the case, especially as there are many suitable lighters already on the market.
The object of the invention is to overcome these objections. This is attained by employing a separate lighter and securely holding it in the case by a watch mounted on the inner side of the case lid.
The annexed drawing shows one of a number of possible ways of carrying the invention into effect.
Fig. 1 represents a front View of the closed case,
Fig. 2 a front view of the open case.
Fig. 3 is a horizontal cross cut of the case, and
Fig. 4 a horizontal cut across the watch embodied in the device, on an enlarged scale.
A container a. having the shape of a case is, divided, by means of a partition 17, into two compartments of which one 0 is larger, and the other smaller d. The larger space 0' is intended to contain the cigarettes and is closed by means of a cover g moved by the thumb-lock e which opens by means of a spring in the direction shown by the arrow 5 and is fixed on the partition b by a spring hinge f. The smaller space d is closed in a similar manner by a cover it which is also fixed on the spring hinge f and closes automatically in the direction shown by the arrow 6. The upper larger half of the small space d holds loosely a fully automatic lighting device 2' the size of which corresponds to the inside size of the space :1. The lighting device is provided at its upper end with a cap it which can be moved upwards by means of a thumb lever Z fastened on its right hand narrow side, by which action a friction lighting device situated below the cap 70 and not represented on the drawing is released, uncovering the wick m which is lighted by it. The upper and side rims of the small receptacle d and the bottom and cover it of the same are provided with openings n and 0. Through the opening n the thumb lever Z of the lighting device 2' may be set to work, and through the opening 0 the covering cap it of the lighting device 1 may be made to move upwards. Thus, the
lighting device 1 may be used without opening the cover h of the receptacle d. On the other hand, the loose way in which the lighting device 1' is kept in the case makes it possible to take it out for the purpose of filling in a fresh supply of fuel. 5 In this manner spilling of the latter in the case, by which the cigarettes might become deteriorated, is avoided, and the lighting device may at any time be rapidly replaced by another one.
The lower part of the narrow cover h contains a watch p the face q of which is visible from the outside. The watch is arranged in such a manner that the part of its casing 1' which projects into the receptacle d holds the lighting device from underneath, keeping it in the correct position. The casing r of the watch p is fastened to the narrow cover 71. and is soldered, much in the manner of a working rim, into the square plate s which is soldered on to the back of the narrow cover it behind a square opening 20 of the latter. The mechanism 12 of a watch is inserted into the case r from the rear and, after the dial q and the hands it have been placed over the mechanism the square watch-glass w is mounted in an aperture of the cover 12. A bottom sheet a: fitted on the back rim of the watch casing r completes the enclosure. The winding-up pin y carries the crown 2 which fits into an opening in the lower part of the receptacle and is partly countersunk so as not to be in the way of the person carrying the device.
I claim:-
1. A combined cigarette case, friction lighter and watch, comprising in combination a bottom plate, a side wall projecting upwards from the periphery of said bottom plate, a partition extending transversely across said bottom plate and connected to two opposite sides of said side wall forming a large and a small compartment, two covers hingedly mounted on said partition, and each adapted to close one of said compartments, the cover for the small compartment having an aperture near one end, the friction lighter removably inserted in said small compartment at the end remote from the aperture in the small cover and the watch fixed on the inner side of the cover under said aperture and adapted to securely hold said lighter in position when the small cover is closed.
2. A combined cigarette case, friction lighter and watch as specified in claim 1, in which the side wall has an aperture adapted to accommodate the watch crown in partly countersunk position.
3. A combined cigarette case, friction lighter and watch as specified in claim 1, in which the bottom plate, side wall and small cover are broken away to give direct access to the lighter to operate same when the case is closed.
