Be it known that I, LEONARD EMELRICH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elgin, in the county of Kane and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Case Holders, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a holder for cases, receptacles, etc, and particularly to a holder in the form of a pocket which is adapted to be mounted upon the body of an automobile for the purpose of receiving such articles as a vanity case, a smoking set, etc.

It is a primary object of my invention to provide for the purpose mentioned a holder which will be neat and ornamental; which may be readily and securely mounted in place; which will retain and protect against injury a case or receptacle which is formed of precious metal or other material; which will expose such a case or receptacle in a manner which is both attractive and convenient for removal; and which may receive interchangeably various kinds of cases or receptacles which are formed to the correct dimensions. I

An exemplification of my invention is set forth in the accompanying drawings in the manner following:

According to this invention, the holder is preferably formed of metal and comprises two principal parts, a front piece A and a back piece B. The back piece (see Fig. 6) is provided with a rear wall 10, a bottom 11 and end walls 12, all preferably integral. As shown, the upper end of the end walls 1924. Serial N0. 714,258.

and through each of these a screw (not shown) may be extended for attaching purposes. By some such means as this, I am enabled to accommodate the screw head in countersunk relation to the inner face of'the rear wall 10, and also to obtain a more secure mounting of the holder through engagement of the rearwardly protruding bosses with the automobile body at the point of attachmentthereto.

Associated with the holder back piece is the front piece A having its upper edge provided by preference with a downwardly extending cut-out portion, as at 15. Near its opposite ends the front piece extends for the full height of the holder so as to securely retain in place the case or receptacles forming its contents. At each of the two ends of the front piece is formed arearwardly extending flange 16, and also, if desired, a similar flange 17 may be provided along its lower edge. These'flanges 16 and 17 are adapted to fit snugly around the proximate front edges of the back piece and,

A metallic holder as thus constructed is properly lined with felt or other suitable material so as to protect the articles which it is intended to receive. The lining which I prefer to use is in three independent parts, (1) a rectangular piece 20 which is of a size and shape to cover the holder bottom; (2) a fiat piece 21 which is of a size and shape to cover the inner face of the holder front A, the lower edge of this lining piece being rested upon the bot-tom lining 20; and (3) a back lining piece 22 of a size and shape to cover the inner faces .of the holder back B. This latter lining component is provided with end flanges 23 which extend toward the front lining component so as to engage therewith. In this manner the front and rear lining pieces co-operate mutually to hold each other in place.

It is preferred that both the front and rear lining pieces shall be mounted upon a form. For this purpose, I have shown a metal plate 25 (see Fig. 2) associated with the front linw Ea ing whose upper and

26 and 27 are bent around and over the corresponding edges of the plate. By an adhesive or otherwise the lining material is secured permanently thereto. In like manner, the rear lining piece is formed over a plate 28 having end flanges corresponding to those of the holder back 13. Along the top and front edges of this form plate the lining material is also bent around and secured as at 29 (see Fig.

A holder answering to the preceding description is adapted to receive a vanity case 30 such as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, or other receptacles such as are shown in Fig. 1. As suggestive of one use to which the holder may be put, the receptacles shown in Fig. -l comprise a smoking set consisting of three parts, two ash or cigarette boxes 31 and a match box 32. This latter box may be providcd with a knob 33 for effecting its convenient removal from the holder. and in addition may have in its bottom a finger opening 3t to facilitate ejection of a match box therefrom. As the several components of the smoking set may be somewhat less in height than the vanity case elsewhere shown, resort may be had to a block which rests upon the holder bottom so as to elevate the smoking set to the height (lCSi1'0 The several receptacles shown in Fig. i may, of course, be interchanged with the single case shown in Fig. 1, and it should be understood that the particular kind or type of cases or receptacles to be introduced into the holder of this invention may be varied at will.

It is to be particularly noted that an increased portion of the front of each case or receptacle is exposed to view by providing in the holder front a downwardly dipping cut 15, as shown. In addition to serving as an ornamental feature, such cut-out portion facilitates application of a screw driver or other tool to the fastening devices which are inserted through the aperture bosses 14: at the time the holder is mounted in place. Such fastening means, however, are at all times concealed from view when the holder linings are assembled in place. On account of the interlitting relationship existing between the several components of the holder, my invention is especially advantageous from the standpoints of 1nanufac ture and assembly. In addition, it is to be noted that the holder thus provided is adapted to receive and protect a vanity case or other receptacle of conventional design, such an article being removable with the aid of a suitable chain or handle for use elsewhere at any time.

I claim:

1. A holder comprising back and front pieces one of which is formed with a bottom and ends extended toward the other, and the latter having flanges overlapping said bottom and ends to connect therewith, the holder being open at the top. and a lining contained within the holder adj accnt the several inner faces thereof, said lining consisting of three parts, one a piece which covers the bottom face of the holder. another which covers the inner face of the holder front. and the third which covers the inner face of the holder back, the latter lining component having end flanges extended toward the lining adjacent the front piece so as to engage therewith, substantially as described.

2. In a holder of the kind described having a bottom, a box-like structure having an opening at the top, a removable lining fitted therewithin including one piece adapted to cover the inner face of the holder front wall, and another piece to cover the inner face of the holder back wall, one of said lining pieces being provided with ends extending toward and in engagement with the other piece, arch of said lining pieces con'iprising two elements. one a plate-like form and the other a soft material attached thereto with certain of its opposite edges extended around the proxin'late edges of the form, substantiall described.

3. A holder of the kind described comprising a back, front, bottom and two ends, there being a cut-out portion in the front affording a partial exposure of an article contained within the holder, 21 rearwardly protruding boss extended from the back and adapted to receive therethrough a fastening device with its head in countersunk relation to the inner face of its back, the boss being aligned with the cut-out portion in the front whereby a tool may freely engage with the fastening device when entered through said boss, and a removable lining fitted within the holder, the lining including two components which extend around the inner faces of the front, back and two ends, and each lining component being formed with two parts, one a form and the other a soft material carried by the form, substantially as described.

4. A holder of the kind described comprising a box-like structure open at the top and having its front wall provided with a cut out portion whereby to increase exposure of an article contained within the holder, and a lining for the holder including two components, each independent of the other, and removably fitted within the holder in mutual engagement, each component including a form and a soft material carried thereby with the edges of the material turned around and secured to the corresponding edges of the form, substantially as described.

In a holder of the kind described comprising a back piece having a bottom and ends integral therewith and a front piece provided with bottom and end. flanges adapted to connect with the proximate edges of the bottom and ends of the back piece, a lining component arranged adjacent the inner face of the front piece and consisting of a form whereon is secured a soft mate rial, the linin extending from end to end of the front plece and from the top to bottom thereof, and a second lining component arranged adjacent the inner faces of the back piece, both of said components comprising a form on which is secured a soft material, the latter component having forwardly extending ends corresponding to the ends of the back piece and adapted to engage with the front lining component adjacent the ends thereof, whereby the one lining serves to prevent displacement of the other, substantially as described.

6. A holder of the kind described comprising a box-like structure having front and rear walls connected by a bottom and two ends, the holder being open upon the top, a lining removably fitted within the holder, the lining comprising three parts, one a bottom piece, another a front piece, and a third a rear piece with end extensions engag ing the front piece, and a container receivable within the holder adapted to rest against all three lining parts therewithin, substantially as described.

'7. A holder of the kind described comprising a boxdike structure open only at the top, a lining of three parts, each independent tioned whereby the one serves to'hold the 1 other apart a fixed distance substantially as described.

8. A holder of the kind described comprising a box-like structure open only at the top and having in one of its walls an opening for the reception of a fastening device, and a lining fitted within the holder and movable into and out of position therein, the lining serving to conceal the inner face of the opening when positioned within the holder, substantially as described.

9. A holder of the kind described comprising a box-like structure open only at the top and having a cutaway portion in the front wall thereof, there being an opening through the rear wall of the holder opposite the cutaway portion of the front wall, a lining removably fitted within the holder, the lining when so positioned serving to conceal the opening through the rear wall of the holder, and a case receivable within the holder in a manner to conceal the lining thereof except in the region of the lining edges which are exposed upon the top side of the holder, substantially as described.
