Claims.
This inventio-n relates to improvements in signs, proposingV a construction which includes a sign body bearing original display matter of amore or less permanent character and a flex- 25 ible covering bearing new ldisplay matter of a special or seasonal import which is adapted to t upon the sign-body to superpose the new display matter upon the original display-matter, the sign vbody serving-as. a frame for the covering v when the latter is arranged in the manner described.
A further object is to provide for facility in applying the covering to, and in removing it from, the sign body.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 is a view in elevation of a sign in which the features of the invention are incorporated.
Figure 2 is a horizontal section taken along line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is an enlarged vertical section taken along line 3 3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is an enlarged perspective view of one 25 of the clips employed in removably securing the covering upon the sign body.
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the covering.
'I'he sign, as illustrated, includes a plate B which is suspended from an arm 1, the said arm 3 being carried by a standard 8 and being formed to provide horizontal and guy sections 9 and I0, respectively. The plate 6 is connected to the horizontal section of the arm 'I by a hanger II and an angle member I2, the former being secured at its mid section, as by rivets I3, to the top flange I4 of the latter and being formed at its opposite ends with inverted U-shaped projections I5 which are suitably apertured to accommodate the arm section 9. The side flange 40 I6 of the angle member I2 is secured to the upper marginal edge of the plate 6 by nut-andbolt fastenings IGa. The construction described enables the plate 6 to swing upon the arm 1, suitable stops I'I which are formed or provided 45 upon the arm section 9 col-operating with the projections I5 to hold the plate in the desired spaced relation with respect to the standard 8.
The opposite faces of the plate 6 bear display matter I8 which, as illustrated. is painted upon the plate and hence is intended to be of a more or less permanent character, it being understood that a single face only of the said plate may be utilized if this is preferred.
In accordance with the invention means is pro- 55 vided, whereby special or seasonal display matter may be exhibited by the sign. The said means' is preferably in the form of a exible covering and, as shown, comprises an envelope I9 which is adapted to t upon the plate 6 in the manner of a slip cover, the sides of the envelope 5 bearing the special or seasonal display matter whicliis indicated at 2U and which'is superposed l upon the display matter I8 when the envelope is arranged upon the plate. The envelope 'I9 may be formed of any suitable material such as, 'for 10 example, paper or cloth. As illustrated, it4 is formed from two sheets of paper 2| which are sewed together along three sides as indicated at 22, the paper sheets preferably being treated with a suitable water-proofing composition. The 15 free edges of the sheets 2I denne the mouth of the envelope, the location of the mouth being predetermined in accordance with the manner in which the plate is to be supported.
Means is provided for removably securing the envelope I 9 upon the plate 6. The said means includes inverted U-shaped clips 23 (Figure 4) which t over the upper edge of the plate and are secured thereto by the nut-and-bolt fastenings Ilia, the bolts of the said fastenings passing 25 through openings 24 formed in the legs of the clips. At their lower ends portions of the legs of the clips are struck outwardly in opposite directions to provide hooks 25. The latter cooperate with eyelets 2B which are carried by the top edges of the side walls of the envelope to removably secure the envelope upon the plate 6. The envelope, as thus supported, covers substantially the entire area of the plate, the latter providing a frame for holding the walls of the envelope straight.
It will be apparent that the plate 6 not only bears display matter of a more or less permanent character but is also available as a frame for envelopes bearing display matter of a special or seasonal import, the Walls of the envelope covering and concealing the original display matter. When an envelope is arranged upon the plate and it is desired to again employ the original display matter or to make use of display matter different from that borne by either the plate or the envelope, the latter may be removed from the plate by raising it slightly to disengage the eyelets 26 from the hooks 25. The envelope can then be slipped off the plate B and be replaced by one bearing the new display matter. The application and removal of the envelopes in the manner described can be accomplished with facility and without the aid of tools. The sign has the further advantage that the clips 23 can be em- 55 `of an envelope which is adapted to t upon said body in the manner of a slip cover and which is adapted to utilize said body as a frame, said envelope bearing display matter which is superposed upon that borne by said face and means for removably securing said envelope upon said body.
2. The combination with a sign body having a face which bears display matter and means for connecting one side only of said body: to a supv porting structure, of an envelope which is adapted to fit upon said body in the manner of a slip cover to utilize said' body as a frame, said envelope bearing display matter of a different import from that borne by said face and means for removably securing said envelope upon said body.
3. The combination withv arsign body having a face which bears display matter and means for connecting said body to a supporting structure, of an envelope which is adapted to fit upon said body in the manner of a slip cover and to utilize said body as a frame, said envelope being formed of Water-proofed paper and bearing display matter of a diierent import from that borne by said face and means for removably securing said envelope upon said body.
4. The combination with a sign body having a face which bears display matter, of an envelope which is adapted to t upon said body in the manner of a slip cover, said envelope bearing display matter of a diierent import from that borne byl said face and U-shaped clips secured along one edge of said body which are formed to provide hooks, said envelope having eyelets which are adapted to t over said hooks, whereby to removably secure said envelope upon said body.
5. The combination With a sign body having a face which bears display matter, and means for supportingsaid body from a structure, said means including bolts, of an envelopewhch is adapted tol t upon said body in the manner of a slip cover, said envelope bearing display matter of a diierent import from that borne by said face and U-shaped clips along one edgeV of said body which are formed to provide hooks, said vclips being secured to said body by said bolts, said envelope having eyelets which are adapted to t over lsaid hooks, whereby to removably secure said envelope upon said body.
