Patented Nov. 19, 1929 UNITED STATS rarer ori-ics HELEN C. GATCHELL, 0F CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIG-NOR TO VISIBLE NIGHT-.AND-DAY STREET-NAME SIGNS, INCORPORATED, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS STREET .SIGN
Application filed September 22, 1927. Serial No. 221,295.
rlhis invention relates to street signs and the like and is fully described in the following specification and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a lamp globe and support therefor embodying the invention;
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged partial section on 'the line 3 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4; is an enlarged partial horizontal section on the line 4 of Fig. 2, and
Fig. 5 is an enlarged partial section of the corner bracket taken on the line 5 of 1.
The embodiment illustrated comprises a lamp post 10 surmounted by a globe supporting member 11 having an internal ledge 12, upon which is adapted to rest the mouth portion 13a of the globe 13 which is preferably made of transparentor translucent glass. The lamp post 10 carries a suitable lamp (not shown) within the globe 13 for the purpose of street illumination.
To the member' 11 is riveted or otherwise secured four corner bracket members 14, to the upper ends of which is secured a heavy wire 15 which is of a generally square form, the corners of the square being angled at 15n to accommodate the wire of the member 11i, Each bracket 15 carries an inwardly turned scroll 16 which is adapted to bear against 'the globe 13 so as to prevent the globe from being rattled around by the wind. The bracket 1st also carries an outwardly curved scroll member 17, the member 17 and the bracket 14 being provided with openings 18 (F ig. 2) through which a flagstaff A may be inserted for the purpose of decoration. The inner end of the-bracket 14 is curved inwardly at 14a and notched at 14h to receive the flagstaif A.
Sign carrying frames 19 are secured to the wire member 15 by means of metal straps 2O passing over the wire so that the fra-mes. 19 depend therefrom. Each frame carries a sign 21 which may be of glass having the name of a street painted or etched thereon so that at night when the streetI lamp is lighted the name of the street will be plainly visible on the glass. Various modifications may be made of this of course. For instance, the
glass plate 21 may be replaced by a sheet of metal or the like which is impervious to light and in which the name of the street is cut out as in av stencil. The frame 19 is preferaby made up of tubular members 19"L which have slots 19" into which the plate 21 may be slid through the open end 19C (Fig. 4). A leaf spring 19d permits the plate to be slid in and moves to a position behind it so as to prevent it from being laterally withdrawn. It can be, however, readily withdrawn by moving the spring 19d to one side.
I A clip 22 is secured Vto each end of each sign carrying frame 19 and each clip has a number of holes 23 therein. The frames 19 may be swun@r back and forth about the wire 15 as shown by the dotted lines in Fig. 3 so as to place the sign carrying frame 19 in a position in which it maybe most readily read. After so positioning it abolt- 24C is passed through t-he registering holes in the clips 22 thereby securing the sign carrying frames in adjusted position.
Thus it will be seen that a very simple and ecient form of street sign has been provided and one which can be economically manufactured.
While I have shown and described but a single embodiment of this invention, it is to be understood that it is capable of many modiiications. Changes therefore in the construction and arrangement may be made which do not depart from the spirit and scope of the invention as disclosed in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A. street sign comprising, in combination, a light-permeable globe, a support therefor, a framework surrounding said globe and carried by said support, and a plurality of sign-carrying frames hingedly mounted on said framework, said frames being secured. together at their lower ends.
2. A street sign comprising, in combination, a lightepermeable globe, a support therefor, a framework surrounding said globe and carried by said support, and a plurality of sign-carrying frames hingedly mounted on said framework, said frames being adiustably secured together at their lower ends.
3. A street sign comprising, in combina tion, a light-permeable globe, a support therefor, a framework surrounding said globe and having corner brackets secured to said support and having a laterally disposed wire carried at its corners by said brackets, sign-carrying frames carried by said wire between adjacent brackets, and means for adjustably securing together adjacent ends of said frames.
4. A street sign comprising, in combination, a lightpermeable globe, a support therefor, a framework surrounding said globe and having corner brackets secured to said support and having a laterally disposed wire carried at its corners by said brackets, sign-carrying frames carried by said wire between adjacent brackets, and means for adjustably securing together adjacent ends of said frames, said corner brackets having a generally S-shape and having openings to receive a flagstaff.
5. A street sign comprising, in combination, a light-permeable globe, a support therefor, a framework surrounding said globe and carried by said support, a plurality of sign-carrying frames mounted on said framework, said globe being removable through said framework, and a plurality of spring-like members carried by said framework and bearing upon said globe.
6. A street sign comprising, in combination, a light-permeable globe, a support therefor, a framework surrounding said globe, a plurality of sign-carrying frames mounted on said framework, said frames being adjustably secured together at their lower ends, and light-permeable signs in said sign-carrying frames.
ln testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 24th day of August, 1927.
HELEN C. GATCHELL.
