DISPLAY, DIRECTION, OR GUIDE APPARATUS Filed Dec. 28, 1936 THANVIAS L A `05A Patented May 25, 1937 UNETED STATES PATE DISPLAY, DIRECTION, OR GUIDE APPARATUS Application December 28, 1936, Serial No. 118,008 In Mexico November 30, 1936 Claims.
This invention relates to a display, directing or guide apparatus designed primarily for use at transportation terminals, but it is to be understood that an apparatus, in accordance with this 5 invention, may be employed .at any point and used in any connection for which it is found applicable and the invention has for its object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, an apparatus capable of being affixed to the walls of buildings or to standards and upright supports suitably located at or near street' corners, in buildings and at crossings for displaying the names and routes of transportation companies, as well as the location of the terminal stations of such companies, direction of traffic, distances, di-
rection of towns and cities, time tables, intervals of the running of trains, buses and street cars, advertising matter, designs, or any other suitable matter which would be of interest to the public.
Further objects of the invention are to provide,
in a manner as hereinafter set forth, an apparatus for the purpose referred to which is simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, durable, compact, pleasing in appearance, thoroughly ellicient in its use, readily assembled, including panels carrying matter for display capable of being interchanged and conveniently positioned in and removed from display position and detachably retained in display position, readily assembled to distinctly display matters of interest to the public and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
With the foregoing and other objects which may hereinafter appear, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be more specifically referred to and are as illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood thatchanges, variations and modifications may be resorted tc which fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.

ment for the panels looking towards the front face of such element, upon an enlarged scale,
Figures 8 and 9 are fronty elevations respectively of the head and base panels,
Figure 10 is a section on line Ill-I0 of Figures 8 and 9, and
Figure l1 is a section on line II I I, Figure 1,
Figure 12 is a section on line I2 l2, Figure l,
The apparatus includes a panel receiving and holding element I, a set of intermediate panels 2 of like construction, a head panel 3, a base panel 4, a retaining element 5 for the panels, an upper detachable securing means li for one end of element 5 and a lower detachable securing means 'I for the other end of element 5. The panels 2, 3 and 4 have their outer faces provided with suitable matter to be displayed thereby,
The panel receiving or holding element I is of rectangular contour and of skeleton or framelike form. The element I includes a top 8, a bottom 9 and a pair of sides I0, II which are of greater length than the top 8 and bottom 9.
The top 8, bottom 9 and side I I are of channelshape in cross section and open inwardly. The side Ill is formed of a pair of spaced inner facewise opposed sections IZ, I3. The section l2 is flush with the o-uter faces of the top 8, bottom 9 and side II. The section I3 is flush with the rear faces of top 8, bottom 9 and side Il. The top 8, bottom 9 and side II merge into each other to provide an inwardly opening pocket coextensive with said top, bottom and side I I. The side Il! merges into the top 8 and bottom 9 in a manner to provide an opening I 3a to permit of the eX- tension of the panels into the pocket. The latter is formed with an upper stretch by top 8, a lower stretch by bottom 9, and an intermediate stretch by side I I which merges into the upper and lower stretches.l The opening formed by the sections I2; I3 of the side lil communicates with the upper and lower stretches of the pocket `and opposes in parallel spaced relation the intermediate stretch of the pocket. At the point yof mergence of the top 8 with the side II, the element I is formed with an opening I4 and at the point of mergence of the bottom 3 with the side I0, the element I is formed with an opening which aligns with the opening I4. The latter is employed for the passage of the upper securing device 5 and the other opening is used for the passage of the securing device l. The element I is formed of any suitable metallic material of the desired gauge.
The panels 2, 3 and 4 are preferably constructed of any suitable metallic material of the desired gauge and of suitable cross sectional contour. The panels 2 preferably will be of concavo convex contour in cross section and are so illustrated. Preferably the panels 2 have their cross sectional length less than the cross sectional length of the panels 3, li.
The number of panels of the intermediate set of panels 2 may be as desired and each panel 2 consists of a body part I5 formed at its top and bottom with inwardly extending right angularly disposed flanges I6, I1. Preferably the panels of the intermediate set of panels are of like size.
The panel 3 consists of a body part I8 formed at its top and bottom with inwardly extending right angularly disposed flanges I9, 2D respectively. The body part I8 at each upper corner thereof is rabbeted as at 2| to provide a clearance.
The panel 4 consists of a body part 22 provided at its top and bottom with inwardly extending right angular disposed flanges 23, 24. The body part 22 at each lower corner thereof is rabbeted as at 25 to provide a clearance.
The retaining element 5 is formed from a metallic bar 26 of a length substantially equal to the height of element I. The bar 26 is of a width whereby may be positioned in the opening I3a formed by the sections I2, I3 of the side l0. The upper and lower ends of the bar 26 are provided respectively with inwardly extending tapered apertured ears 21, 28 for extension into the upper and lower stretches of the pocket. The apertures 29 in the ears 21, 28 are to align with the openings in the element I through which extend the upper and lower securing means 6 and 1.
The upper and lower securing means B, 1 are of like form and each consists of a headed bolt 30 and a clamping nut 3|. The heads to bolt 30 are positioned against the outer face of the element I and the nuts 3l are positioned against the rear face of element I.
One of the rabbeted corners of the panel 3 provides a clearance for the shank of the bolt 3!) of the securing means 6. One of the lower rabbeted corners of the panel 4 provides a clearance for the shank of the bolt 38 of the securing means 1.
The base panel A is positioned within and at the bottom of element I. The intermediate panels 2 are positioned in the element I and are arranged in superimposed relation. The head panel 3 is positioned Within element I at the upper portion thereof and is superimposed upon the upper one of the intermediate panels. The panel 3 extends into the top 8, and the panel 4 into the bottom 9. The panels 2, 3, and 4 extend into the intermediate stretch of the pocket. The panels 2, 3 and IS are also arranged in the side iii. The element 5 is positioned within the side Iii and detachably secured to the element I The bar 25 of element 5 opposes the sides of the panels which are arranged in the side i8 thereby retaining the panels in the receiver or holder element.
One or more of the panels 2 may be provided with a directing means 32 in the form of an arrow. The panels 2, 3 and .4i have their outer faces provided with any desirable matter which is to be displayed. The apparatus is such that when it is desired to remove a panel 2 and an'- other one substituted therefor, the action may expeditiously be carried out. It is not necessary to completely detach the element 5 when re moving and positioning the panels because it can be detached at one end and swung outwardly at its other end to provide sufficient clearance for the removal and substituting of panels.
Removable means, indicated at 33 is provided to prevent the spreading apart of the sections I2, i3 of the side I0. The said means 33 is arranged inwardly of the element 5 when the latter is detachably secured to element.
