This invention relates to locomotive tenders in which stoker mechanism is used and is a division of my copending application Serial Number 449,- 331, filed May 2, 1930.
An object of the invention is the provision of a tender constructed to permit mounting the stoker drive mechanism in a compartment rearward of the stoker conveyor and trough.
Another object of the invention is the provision of. a tender constructed to permit mounting the stoker drive mechanism comprising either gearing, the stoker engine, or both exterior of the tender water compartment, rearward of the stoker conveyor, above the floor of the water compartment and above the tender base frame in a location where there is ample space to facili- 'tate repairs. I
Other objects, advantages and novel details of construction will be apparent during the course of the following description and appended claims taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of a portion of a locomotive and tender illustrating one form of the invention;

In the drawings, the locomotive tender is destaken on lines 88 View? taken on line -99 ignated generally by the numeral l0 and a portion of the locomotive by H. The tender body portion is formed with a fuel section or compartment l2 at the forward portion of the tender and a water compartment l3 extending rearward 5 of the fuel compartment separated from each other by the rear slope plate or sheet l4, and side 'slope sheets a, (Fig. 8), fastened at' their lower marginal portions to a trough member Hi to form a water tight partition wall.
A portion of the tender base or frame, which in the conventional design tender extends from one end of the tender to the other, is shown at I6 coupled at I! to the locomotive frame I 8.
The floor IQ of the fuel compartment is provided with a central longitudinal opening communicating with the trough l5 and through a which fuel is supplied to the trough by gravity. Plates 2| are slidably mounted in the opening 20, and may be moved from covering position to 20 permit entry of the fuel into the trough as the supply becomes depleted.
The trough I 5 at its forward end opens into a tubular conduit portion 22. A spout member 23 is mounted on the tubular conduit portion 22 to move universally with respect thereto and leads forwardly to deliver fuel to a riser conduit 24 on the locomotive. The riser conduit 24 communicates with the firing opening 25 in the backhead 26 of the locomotive firebox.
Suitable mechanism is employed for crushing and for transferring the fuel, including a crushing abutment 21, a conveyor screw 28 mounted in the trough l5 and the tubular conduit portion 22, and a screw 29 in the riser conduit. The crushing abutmentll'l is .archedover the screw 28-at-the forward 'end thereof for engaging the fuel to crush it to a proper size for firing.
Referring now more particularly to Figs. 1, 2 and 3, the screws 28 and 29 are driven separately at their rear ends through gearing housed in a water tight gear casing 30 by the driving motor 3|. The gear casing 30 is carried/by the trough and mounted within the water compartment l3. Access may behad to the gear casing from the interior of the water compartment. The motor 3'! is mounted exterior of the water compartment on the top wall 32' thereof and rearward of the slope sheet It thereby making it easily and conveniently accessible for purposes of inspection; repair and replacement. Bracing 33 prevents the weight of the motor from sagging the top wall 32. The crank shaft of the motor is cperatively connected by means of gearing 34 to a downwardly and forwardly inclined drive shaft 35 The drive shaft 35 extends through the water compartment and into the.
gear casing 30 where it is supported by a hearing 18. The drive shaft is enclosed in a water tight sleeve 36 threaded in the gear casing 30 at itslower end. The sleeve 38 is loosely supported at its upper end in a packing gland 31 and arranged to provide slight telescopic movement therewith. A water tight joint is made between the sleeve 38 and gland 31 by means of packing 38 and an adjustable nut 38. In effect, the parts 31,38 and 33 form a packing box receiving the. sleeve 38. y
The transmission gearing in the gear casing 38 for the screw 28 comprises a bevel pinion 48 on the lower end of the drive shaft 35 meshing with a bevel gear 4| on anintermediate stub shaft 42, and a pinion 43 on the intermediate shaft 42 for driving the gear 44 on the screw stub shaft 45, which is secured to androtates the screw 28 in the stoker trough. Adjacent the' closed in a water tight sleeve 58. The sleeve 58 at its rear end is threaded in the gear casing 38 and at its forward end is welded a 5| to a transverse wall 52 on the front end of the stoker trough. The shaft 48 is supported vertically at its forward end in a bearing 53. A telescopically extensible shaft 54 is,' u niversa y jointed exteriorlyofthe water compartment at 55 to the shaft 48, and at 58 to the rear end of the screw 29 in the riser conduit.
Figures 4.1 5. and 6 illustrate an arrangement in which a driving motor compartment 51 is located rearward of the screw 28 and at the rear end of the tender. The compartment 51 is formed in the water compartment shielding the driving motor 88 from the water therein. The compartment 51 comprises front, top and side walls 58, 59 and 'respeetively. The floor 8| of the tender water compartment forms the bottom wall of the motor compartment 51. The motor compartment opens through the exterior rear upright wall 82 of the tender and a removable cover 83 forms its other side-wall.

The screws 28 and 29 are rotated through common transmission gearing in a gear casing 84 in a manner similar to that described in regard to the structure shown inFigures 1, 2 and 3, with the exception that a gear 85 on the intermediate stub shaft 42 is driven by a pinion 88' .on the forward end of a horizontally disposed drive shaft 81 operatively connected at its rear end to the driving motor 88. The combination in a locomotive tender having fuel and water compartments and a conveyor mounted in the tender beneath the fuel compartment, of a casing disposed in the'water compartment for housing drive mechanism for said conveyona sleeve adapted to enclose a drive shaft at one end being fixed with said casing and 80 at its other end being loosely supported on a wall of said water compartment, and means for providing a water tightseal between the loosely supported end of said sleeve and said wall.

The combination in a locomotive tender having fuel and water compartments and a conveyor mounted in the tender beneath the fuel compartment, of a casing disposed in the water compartment for housing drive mechanism for said conveyor, a sleeve adapted to enclose a drive 40 shaft at one end being fixed with said casing and at its other end being loosely supported on a wall of said water compartment, and means comprising a packing box for providing a water tight seal between the loosely supported end of said 48 sleeve and said wall.

The combination of a locomotive tender having fuel and water compartments and a conveyor mounted on the tender beneath the fuel compartment, of a casing disposed in the water 50 compartment, drive mechanism housed in said casing and operatively connected with said conveyo'r, a sleeve extendingthrough the water compartn ient at one end being fixed to said casing and at its other end being loosely supported on an exterior wall of said water compartment, a
drive shaft housed within said sleeve atone end operatively connected with said drive mechanism and at its other end extending through and beyond the sleeve, and means providing a water tight seal between the loosely supported end of said sleeve and said exterior wall.

In a locomotivetender havinga water compartment, the combination of a water tight casing within said compartment, a sleeve extending from said casing through the water compartment to a side wall thereof and opening without said "compartment, said sleeve being water tight and at one end rigidly mounted and at its other end loosely mounted, and a packing box receiving said loosely mounted end of the sleeve.

In a locomotive tender having a water compartment, the combination of a watertight casing within said compartment, a sleeve extend- .36 in: from-aid casing through the water com tment to a wall thereof and opening without said I compartment, said sleeve being water tight and at one end rigidly mounted and at its other. end loosely mounted, and means receiving said loosely mounted end of the sleeve to form a water tight joint.

and a coal hopper equipped with a fuelfeeding device, and driving mechanism for said device mounted on said rear end portion and operatively connected with said device.

In a tender, an underframe, a tank thereon, at least a portion of one wall of said tank being disposed inwardly from an adjacent sill of said underframe, a coal hopper located forwardly of said tank and including stoker feeding mechanism, stoker driving mechanism mounted on the exposed portion of said underframe, an elongated housing extending from said inwardly disposed wall of said tank to said coal hopper, and a driv ing connection for saidfeeding mechanism ex- 29. The combination in'a locomotive tender having fuel and water sections, of a conveyor mounted in said tender to receive fuel from said fuel section, gearing housed at the rearward end of said conveyor and operatively connected thereto, a compartment in said water section spaced rearwardly of said gearing andopening through a wall of the tender, a drive motor mounted in said compartment, and means operatively connecting said drive motor with said gearing including a shaft extending through the water section.

The combination in a locomotive tender having fuel and water sections, of a conveyor mounted in said tender to receive fuel from said fuel section, gearing rearward of said conveyor and operatively connected thereto, said gearing being housed within a watertight casing' formed in the water section, a water-tight com-- partment in said water section spaced rearwardly of said gearing and opening through a wall of the tender, a drive motor mounted in said compartment, means operatively connecting said drive motor with said gearing including a shaft extending through the water section and a watertight sleeve surrounding that portion of said shaft within the water section.
31. The combination in a locomotive tender having fuel and water sections separated by partition plates and a fuel trough, and a conveyor mounted in said trough to receive fuel from said fuel section, of transmission gearing housed rearward of said conveyor and operatively connected thereto, a compartment in said water section spaced rearwardly of said gearing and opening through a wall of the tender, a drive motor mounted in said compartment, means operatively connecting said drive motor with said gearing including a shaftextending through the water section, a shaft operaflv'ely connected at its rear end with said gearing extending forwardly therefrom through the water section to the exterior thereof.
32. The combination in a locomotive tender having fuel and water sections, of aconveyor mounted in said tender beneath the fuel section to receive fuel therefrom, said conveyor forming a portion of the top wall of said water section, geareratively connecting said drive motor with said gearing including a shaft extending through the water section.
