(Cl. 22061) My invention is an improvement in devices for removably clamping a cover on a metallic receptacle such as shipping drums, barrels or the like of heavy gauge material and relates more particularly to a clamping ring and means for expanding and/or contracting the same for removing or securing the cover on a drum in fluid tight sealed relation thereto.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide a ring contracting and/or expanding mechanism capable of applying successive contracting forces of increased intensity to the ring to contract the same and to thereby press the cover and receptacle together in fluid tight sealed,

Another object is to construct such a device which is self-contained within the confines of the ring and which includes a pair of operating levers swingable in opposite directions to contract the ring. I
A further object'is to provide means for contracting the ring whereby the ring may be initially contracted to firmly secure the cover in place on the receptacle for shipping the same 5 empty, and whereby the ring may be further contracted to effectively seal the cover on the receptacle in fluid tight relation, said means being capable of operation so as to apply said contracting forces either simultaneously or successively.
A still further object consists in providing a bearing member operable by a pair of levers to impart an outward substantially radial pressure against the cover flange to draw the ring ends inwardly toward the cover flange and receptacle and together, whereby the contracting forces applied to the ring will be more uniformly distributed about the circumference of the ring.
Another object consists in providing a de- -vice of the character described which is very strong and durable, and which is capable of exerting tremendous closing pressures on the cover and drum, yet which is simple of construction 5 and assembly and very inexpensive to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become more apparent from the following description of one embodiment thereof, reference being made to'the accompanying drawing in which like reference characters are employed to designate like parts throughout the same.

Referring now more particularly to the drawing, the barrel or drum is indicated at I. The upper open end of the container is formed with a peripheral bead 2. A cover 3 comprising a 20 cupped or depressed member, having a peripheral upwardly and outwardly extending flange l, is supported by the bead 2 in such a manner that the cupped portion oi the cover may be telescoped for a short distance within the open end of the container, as illustrated in Figure 2. It will be noted that a portion of the flange 4 is oi arcuate cross section to conform with the approximate curvature of the upper surface or the bead. A packing consisting of an annulus of any suitable packing material, such as flexible rubber tubing or cork. is interposed between the flange 4 and the bead.
According to'the present invention, I have provided an extremely, simple and efllcient means for removably securing the cover on the receptacle .or container to eflect a fluid tight seal between the same by exerting a substantially: uniform and firm pressure along the cover flange and bead in a direction substantially parallel to the axisot .thecontainer. 1 Such means, preferably includes a transversely split, channeled clamping ring: I of substantially U-shaped cross-section and which is capable of being contracted'randexpanded by suitable means. Upon contracting the type of ring herein illustrated it will be seen that the cover flange will be tightly pressed against the packing 5 and the supporting bead 2 under a substantially vertical pressure.
The ring is provided at its ends with suitable lugs, plates, or the like, 'I and 8, which are preferably welded to the adjacent ring ends respectively and extend inwardly of the ring to movably support suitable means for contracting and expanding the ring.
Operating levers 9 and ID are pivotally connected with the respective lugs or brackets I and 8 at H and I 2, and are mounted to swing within the confines of the ring.
These levers are connected together in substantially parallel planes by a sort of toggle or multiple link to provide an effective power driving connection therebetween comprising two sets of links l3-i4 and I5-l6, one set l3l4 bring in a plane above that of the levers and the other set l5 and I6 lying in a plane below that of the links. An additional link I! also pivotally connects the underside of the lever ill with the lug 8 and afiords additional reinforcement and balance to the lever l0.
A stud or rivet i8 pivotally connects adjacent ends of the respective links I3, l4, l5 and I6 as shown more clearly in Figure 5, and is slidable along the slot l9 cut in the lug I. The opposite respective ends of the links it and I5 are pivotally connected to the lever 9 by means of the stud or rivet 20, while the other ends of the respective links H and iii are pivotally connected with the lever III .by means of the stud 2|. The opposite end of the reinforcing link I1 is likewise pivotally connected with the stud 2|.
It is to be noted that the links l3 and ii are shorter than the links H and I6 and that they are pivoted to the lever 9 at a point defining a shorter radius (between the axes II and 2|!) than the radius defined by the axes l2 and 2| on the lever l0. By means of this construction the lever It may first be swung to the right in Figure 4 to impart an initial degree of contraction to the ring which will be suflicient to hold the cover in place as in shipping the drums empty. In so doing the stud I! will travel to the right in the slot l9'until it abuts the wall at the right hand end of the slot. Further movement of the lever III to the right will draw the ends of the ring toward each other to initially contract the ring. Movement of the lever 9 in the opposite direction about its pivot ll will effect a driving connection through the shorter radius |I--20 to apply additional power in further contracting the ring to seal the cover on the receptacle end in fluid tight sealed-relation. As the lever 9 approaches the circumference of the ring in its movement to the left the linkage l3, ll, I5 and IE will have relativemovement with the lug I and the stud ID will slide in the slot to a point intermediate the slot ends as shown in Figure 3.
It will be seen that I have also provided a cam-like bearing surface 22 by extending the outer edge of the lower link l6 toward the circumference of the ring. This bearing surface 22 is curved and is positioned to engage the inner upright wall of the cover flange 4 when the lever I0 is rotated to the right to exert an outward substantially radial pressure against the cover flange adjacent the split, whereby the ends of the ring will be pulled inwardly toward the axis of the receptacle. This action materially aids in uniformly distributing the closing forces about the circumference of the ring during contraction of the same and further assists in properly seating the ring on the bead and cover flange. 5
Suitable keepers or retainers 23 and 24 may be welded to the ring at points to receive the handle portions of the levers 9 and [0 respectively and to removably retain them in ring contracted position. Registering openings 25 and 26 in the levers and retainers will permit the levers to be inspection sealed in the usual manner.
While I have described the illustrated embodiment of my invention in some particularity, obviously many others will readily occur to those skilled in this art, and I do not, therefore, limit myself to the precise details shown and described but claim as my invention all embodiments, variations and modifications thereof coming within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In a clamping device for a metallic receptacle having a bead formed on its open end and a cover having a flange fitting over the bead, a contractible channeled clamping ring having 26 portions engageable with and pressing the cover flange and bead together when the ring is contracted, lugs extending inwardly of the ring from the ends thereof, and means for contracting the ring including levers pivotally connected 90 with each of saidlugs, and means connecting I said levers to provide a driving connection therebetween, one of said lugs having a guide to receive and guide said connecting means during swinging movement of either of said levers.
2. In a clamping device for a metallic receptacle having a bead formed on its open end and a cover having a flange fitting over the bead, a contractible channeled clamping ring having portions engageable with and pressing the cover flange and bead together when the ring is contracted, lugs extending inwardly of the ring from the ends thereof, and means for contracting the ring including levers pivotally connected with each of said lugs, and means connecting 45 said levers to provide a driving connection therebetween, one of said lugs being slotted to receive and guide a portion of said connecting means during rotation of either of said levers.
3. In a clamping device for a metallic recep- 5 tacle having a bead formed on its open end and a cover having a flange fltting over the bead, a contractible channeled clamping ring having portions engageable with and pressing the cover flange and bead together when the ring is con- 5 tracted, lugs extending inwardly of the ring from the ends thereof, and means for contracting the ring including levers pivotally connected with each of said lugs, and means connecting said levers to provide a driving connection there- 0 between, one of said lugs being adapted to positively receive and guide said connecting means during rotation of either of said levers, and a projection on said connecting means for bearing against the cover flange when one of said levers 65 is rotated to exert a substantially radial outward pressure against the cover flange.
4. In a clamping device for a metallic receptacle having a bead formed on its open end and a cover having a flange fltting over the bead, a 70 contractible channeled clamping ring having .portions engageable with and pressing the cover flange and bead together when the ring is con-' tracted, lugs extending inwardly of the ring from the ends thereof, and means for contracting the ring including levers pivotally connected with each of said lugs, and means connecting said levers to provide a driving connection therebetween, one of said lugs being slotted to receive and guide a portion of said connecting means during rotation of either of said levers, and a projection on said connecting means for hearing against the cover flange when one of said levers is'rotated to exert a substantially radial outward pressure against the cover flange.
'5. In a clamping device for a metallic receptacie having a bead formed on its open end and a cover having a flange fitting over the bead, a.
contractible channeled clamping ring having portions engageable with and pressing the cover flange and bead together when the ring is contracted, lugs extending inwardly of the ring from the ends thereof, and means for contracting the ring including levers pivotally' connected with each of said lugs, a pair of links pivotally connecting said levers to provide a driving connection therebetween, a bearing member carried by said links, one of said lugs being formed to slidably receive said bearing member and .to limit its movement in one direction whereby the ends of the ring may be drawn together when one of said levers is rotated.
6. In a clamping devicefor a metallic receptacle having a bead formed on its open end and a cover having a flange fitting over the head, a
contractible channeled clamping ring having portions engageable with and pressing the cover flange and bead together when the ring is contracted, lugs extending inwardly of the ring from the ends thereof, and means for contracting the ring including levers pivotally connected with each of said lugs, a pair of links a pivotally' connecting said levers to provide a driving connection therebetween, a bearing, member carried by said links, one or said lugs being slotted to slidably receive said bearing member and to limit its movement in one direction whereby the ends ofthe ring may be drawn together when one of said levers is rotated. i 7.
