This invention relates to tools, and more particularly to those such as are used for applying fastener elements to unite the overlapping "ends of box straps and the like, although not limited 5 thereto.
In a co-pending application entitled Fastener, filedDecember 29, 1933 and bearing Serial No, 704,561, I have disclosed a novel fastener element for uniting the ends of overlapped tying elements, and particularly box straps and the like, in such manner as topositively prevent their relative movement. The novel fastener element of this co-pending application comprises a substantially U-shaped blank which provides downwardly extending legs. This U-shaped blank has a plurality of inwardly extending apertures from both of its longitudinal edges, the axes of the bends of the legs intersecting the substantial mid-portions of the apertures. function of this fastener element is to embrace with its downwardly extending legs the overlapped ends of a tying element -of the type re-- ferred to, and to permit the upsetting of the material of the latter through the apertures, causing lugs to be sheared inwardly from its edges, and thus made to interlock with the side edges thereof. 7
In my Patent No. 1,986,711, dated January 1, 1935, entitled Tool for applying fastener ele ment, filed December 29, 1933 and bearing Serial No. 704,560, I have disclosed a novel .tool to perform the operation previously mentioned, the
present application being an improvement there- It is among the objects of the present invention to provide a novel tool, particularly adaptable for applying a fastener element of the type referred to, which will be cheap and easy .to manufacture, operable with considerable speed, and at the expenditure of but little effort. v
This and further objects will be apparent after referring to the drawings, in which:

Referring more particularly to the drawings, the numerals 2 and 3 designate a pair of plates which form a housing for the various elements of the device of the invention. The plates..2 and 3 l are each provided at one end with an inwardly extending boss, as at 4 and 5, respectively, which are apertured in alinement,as at 6, to receive a bolt I. The bolt 1 carries a nut 8 for holding the plates 2 and 3 in assembled relationship, it being noted that the adjacent ends of the bosses 4 and 5 are spaced apart, as at 9, to accommodate an v element to be later described.
The other ends of the plates 2 and 3 are provided with a pair of alined apertures l2, in each of which a stud I8 is disposed. The studs I 3 are maintained in position by means of nuts M on their ends. A lever I5 is pivoted on each of the studs l3, as shown at l6, and each carries an upward extension II. The other and lower end of each of the levers I5 is extended inwardly at right angles, as shown at l8, and provided slightly thereabove with a recess l9. ii plurality of recesses l9 are provided in the upper surfaces of the inward extensions l8 on the lower ends of the pivoted levers l5, for a purpose to 'be later described.
A die 20 is disposed in each of the recesses l9, and provided with a plurality of inwardly extendlnglugs 2|. The lower adjacent surfaces of the dies 20 are beveled, together with the inwardly extending lugs 2|, as shown at 22. The side walls of the lower ends of the levers'lS are apertured to open into the recesses I9, as shown at 23. A capscrew 24 is disposed in each of the apertures 23 with its threaded extremity in a screwthreaded recess 25 in each of the dies 20, thus enabling the adjustable movement of the latter.
The lower edges of the plates 2 and 3 are provided with screw-threaded recesses 26. A magnetized guide block 21 is secured tothese edges of the plates 2 and 8 by cap-screws 28 which extend therethrough, as at 29, to engage the screw-threaded recesses 28. The guide block 21 is provided on its sidecdges with a plurality of recesses 30 to receive the inwardly extending lugs 2| of the dies 20.
A pair of extended levers II are pivoted, as at 22, to the extremities of theupward extensions II oithelevers II. Itisthroughtheselcvers 3| that the elements of the device of the invention are operated. One of the levers 3| carries offset from its pivoted extremity a pair of arms 35, while the other lever carries offset from its pivoted extremity a pair of arms 35, which are nested within and pivotally connected thereto by a pin 31.
A guide bar 38 is supported within the housing formed of the plates 2 and 3 by having its upper end 39 held between the adjacent ends 9 of the bosses 4 and 5, and its lower end 40 apertured, as at 4|, to receive the studs l3. To permit this disposition the pivoted levers i5 are recessed, for clearance, as at 42.
The guide bar 38 is slotted, as at 43, adjacent its upper end 39 to receive, for sliding movement, a collar 44 in which the pin 31 is journaled.
The magnetized block 21 has on each end downwardly extending legs 45 beveled on their lower adjacent surfaces, as at 46. This provides a guide for placing the tool over box straps. The lower surfaceof the block 21 is recessed, as at 41, to permit the longitudinal placement of a substantially U-shaped fastener 50.
In operation, a box strap is made to embrace an article and its ends, as shown at 55 and 55 in Figure 2, are arranged in overlapped relationship. A U-shaped fastener element is placed on the magnetized block 21 in the recess 41 and between the inward extensions ill of the levers l5. This alines the fastener 50 into longitudinal and transverse position for placement of itself and the tool over the box strap elements. At this stage of the operation, the levers 3| are in the position indicated in Figures 1 and 4. The levers 3| are moved together, which permits their pivoted arms 35 and36 to move the pin 31 downwardly in the slot 43 of the guide bar 38. This movement forces the upward extensions H of the levers i5 apart, thus bringing the inward extensions I8 on the lower extremities thereof into registration with and extending through the recesses 30 in .the guide block 21. This movement enables the inwardly extending lugs l8 to engage the downwardly extending legs 5i of the fastener .element 50 and to bend the same inwardly into intimate contact with the lower sur-.

As the lower extremities of the pivoted levers l5 are moved inwardly, the dies 20 in the recesses I 9 are likewise made to register with the recesses 30 in the guide block 21 and permit their beveled lower-adjacent surfaces; to engage the portions of the overlapped end 55 of the box strap which is exposed through the apertures 52. The continued movement of these beveled surfaces 22 of the dies 20 causes the hen 'ng and partial shearing of the side edges of t e overlapped ends 55 and 56 of the box strap. These sheared portions, which are indicated at 55 and 56" in Figure 3, engage the side edges of the aperture 52 of the U-shaped fastener element 50 and positively prevent relative movement between the same and the ends of the strap.
It will be noted in Figures 4 and 5 that the plurality of recesses 19 in the upper surfaces of the inward projections It on the lower ends of ,the pivoted levers l5will permit sufficient clearance to allow the sheared portions 55 and 50' of the box strap to be depressed below the lower surface of the assembled fastener element 50.
After the applying operation is complete, the levers 3! are moved apart to their original positions, as shown in Figure 1, preparatory to a repetition thereof.
It is particularly important that the edges of the overlapped portions 55 and 58 of the box strap be sheared (as at 55 and 55') to the same depth on both sides. In order to do this, the dies 20 must be equidistant from the center line of the device at all stages of its operation. This is rendered possible by pivotally connecting together the levers 3! with the pin 31, which is maintained in slidable relationship by means of the collar 44 in the slot 43 of the guide bar 33.
While I have shown and described one specific embodiment of my invention, it will be under-' stood that I do not wish to be limited exactly thereto, since various modifications may be made without departing from the scope of my invention, as defined in the following claims.
I claim:
1. A device for applying an apertured and substantially U-shaped fastener element comprising, in combination, a housing, a pair of jaw members pivotally mounted on said housing, a guide block disposed between said pair of pivoted jaw members, said guide block being constructed and arranged to receive and hold said substantially U-shaped fastener element and having apertures which aline with the apertures of the latter, means on said pivoted jaw members for contacting said substantially U-shaped fastener element intermediate its apertures and bending it to tightly embrace the object to which it is to -magnetized guide block disposed between said pair of pivoted jaw members. said guide block being constructed and arranged to receive and hold said substantially U-shaDed fastener element and having apertures which allne with the apertures of the latter, means on said pivoted jaw members for contacting said substantially U- shaped fastener element intermediate its apertures and bending it to tightly embrace the object to which it is to be applied. and an adjustable die element secured to each of said pivoted jaws, said die elements being constructed and arranged to partially shear portions of said object through the alined apertures-in said guide block and said substantially U-shaped fastener element. t
