6 Claims.
This invention relates to an improved picker for looms and more especially to a picker having a metallic casing with a filler insertable therein for engaging the tip of the shuttle for propellin the same to the other end of the lay, it being understood that a picker of this structure is located at each end of the lay of the loom.
It is an object of this invention to provide an improved picker for looms having a metallic shell member adapted to' be secured to the upper end of the picker stick and having a cavity therein for receiving an insert of wear resisting material such as leather, rubber and the like, said metallic casing preferably having a vertically disposed partition therein with the insert fitting on both sides of the partition and said partition having a hole therethrough for receiving a projection on one portion of the insert for not only looking the insert in position when the picker stick is inserted into the casing but also providing a continuous shock-receiving member extending from the picker stick to the point of impact with the nose of the shuttle as the front wall of the casing has a suitable opening therein larger than the tip or nose of the shuttle may be engaged by the insert and so that the shuttle will not be engaged by the metallic casing serving toprevent spread of the picker as a result of continued use.
Heretofore, pickers have been made of leather and secured on the upper end of the picker stick. Constant use of the picker causes a spreading of the same and causing the picker to bind in the shuttle box in the lay of the loom in which it operates and necessitating the removal of the picker and the installation of the new one. By the provision of a metallic casing holding the removable insert, the insert can be quickly removed and at the same time the insert will last longer than the conventional picker because it is prevented from spreading laterally as a result of constant use.
Some of the objects of the invention having been stated, other objects will appear as the description proceeds, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which:-
Figure 1 is an elevation of one end of the lay of a loom showing the picker in one position;
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view taken along line 22 in Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view through the picker and showing the picker stick in elevation and being taken along line 33 in Figure 2;
Figure 4 is an isometric view of the metallic casing for receiving the picker stick and for receiving the removable insert;
Figure 5 is an isometric view of the insert removed from the metallic ring; Figure 6 is an isometric view showing a slightl modified form of the metallic casing.
Referring more specifically to the drawing, the numeral l 9 indicates one end of the lay of a loom which is usually provided with a longitudinally extending slot in which the picker stick H is adapted to have movement. The upper end of this picker stick has the metallic casing l2 secured thereon by any suitable means such as. one or more screws l4 penetrating holes l3 located on each side of the metallic casing or having a screw I l penetrating a hole in the rear end of the casing and being embedded in the picker stick. The picker itself is adapted to slide in the rear end of the shuttle box lb. The shuttle box is usually fitted with side pieces- 6 and I having linings 8 and 9 therein for checking the shuttleas it enters the shuttle box.
The metallic casing 12 hasa vertically disposed partition l6 therein provided with a hole I! and the front wall l8 of the casing in the preferred form is slightly convex, and has a suitable hole [9 therein through which the nose or tip of the shuttle penetrates to engage the impact receiving insert in the picker. The partition l6 divides the metallic casing into two vertically disposed guideways 20 and 2|, and in the preferred form it is seen that in the upper end of the guideway 2| is partially closed by overlapping portion 22.
The shock receiving insert is designated broadly by reference character 25. This is preferably made of a plurality of layers of leather designated by reference characters 26, 21, 28, 29 and 30. The layers 26, 21 and 2B are secured together by any suitable means such as by gluing the same together, though if desired, suitable pins 3! may be passed therethrough, though this is not necessary as they are held in tight engagement with the interior of the casing.
bore 35 therein for engaging the nose or point of the shuttle, when the picker stick is operated to propel the shuttle to the other end of the lay. The block of leather or other suitable material 33 serves a double purpose in providing a continuous resilient impact receiving body between the nose of the shuttle and the picker stick and also serves the purpose of locking the insert in position in the casing when the picker stick is inserted therein as it is seen that the filler cannot move from the position shown in Figure 3 when the parts are assembled as there shown.
In Figure 6 a slightly modified form of casing 31 is shown in which like parts will bear like reference characters. In this form, the front wall I8 is fiat instead of arcuate as shown in Figure 4, and the guideway 2| maintains the same cross section throughout.
In the drawing and specification there has been set forth a preferred embodiment of the invention, and although specific terms are employed, they are used in a generic and descriptive sense only, and not for purposes of limitation, the scope of the invention being set forth in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A picker for looms comprising a metallic casing having a pair of vertically disposed cavities therein and provided with a partition between the cavities, means for securing one of the picker Sticks in one of the cavities, a bifurcated filler member having two legs, one leg thereof being insertable in the picker stick cavity and adjacent the picker stick, the other leg being simultaneously insertable in said other cavity for engaging the shuttle and the front side wall of the casing having a hole therethrough, through which the nose of the shuttle projects when engaged by the filler in the casing.
2. A picker for looms comprising a metallic casing having a pair of vertically disposed cavities therein, means for securing a picker stick in one cavity, a bifurcated resilient insert, one leg thereof being insertable in the other cavity and the other leg insert-able into the first named cavity, the front wall of the casing having a; hole therethrough so that the insert may engage the tip of the shuttle without engaging the shuttle with the metallic casing.
3. A picker for looms comprising a metallic casing having a pair of vertically disposed cavities therein separated by a vertically disposed partition and said partition having a hole therein, the front side wall of said casing also having a hole therein, a resilient insert insertable on both sides of said partition and having a projection on one portion thereof adapted to lit in the hole in said partition to lock the insert in position in the casing, the remainder of one of the cavities not filled by the insert being adapted to receive a picker stick for additionally locking the insert in position in the casing and the front portion of the insert being adapted to engage the nose of the shuttle projecting through the hole in the front wall of said casing.
4. A picker for looms comprising a metallic casing having a vertically disposed partition therein and a removable bifurcated impact receiving insert having legs simultaneously insertable into said casing on both sides of said partition.
5. A picker for looms comprising a metallic casing provided with a partition therein, an impact receiving insert insertable in the said casing on both sides of said partition, said partition having a hole therethrough and said insert on one portion thereof having a projection adapted to fit into said hole to hold the insert in position in the casing.
6. A picker for looms comprising a metallic casing provided with a portion therein dividing the same into a picker stick compartment and a filler compartment, means for securing the picker stick in one compartment, an impact receiving insert insertable in said filler compartment, said insert having a parallel leg integral therewith insertable in said picker stick compartment adjacent said picker stick and on the opposite side of said partition from said impact receiving insert.
