Description

Patented Oct. 21, 1941 fnooM PICKER Louis A. 'De'coning, woonsocketylt. 71.1 Y -ApplicationAp1-il 1, 1939, Serial'Nq. 2 5,525] 1 01am. (01. 139 60) This invention relates to an improved loom picker.
One object of the invention is to provide a loom picker which is formed of metal and is thus capable of use over longer periods of time than the common rawhide pickers now in use.
Another object of the invention is to provide a loom picker having an interchangeable shuttle driving plug and, also, an interchangeable picker rod sleeve, which plug and sleevemay easily be replaced at small expense, should they become worn.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character having curved driving surfaces for the picker stick so that cramping of the stick will not take place.
Another object of the invention is to provide a loom picker having guiding surfaces which will assure movement of the picker in a straight line.
And a still further object of the invention is to provide a loom picker which will be characterized by the utmost simplicity and which may be manufactured cheaply.
Other objects of the invention will become apparent during the course of the following description.
Referring now to the accompanying drawing:
Figure l is a top plan view, partly in section, of my improved picker.
Figure 2 is an end view of the device, the end of a picker stick being shown in position in dotted lines.
Figure 3 is a sectional view on the line 33 of Figure 1, looking in the direction indicated by the arrows.
Figure 4 is a side elevation showing a slightly modified form of driving plug.
Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawing, wherein similar reference numerals designate like parts throughout the various views, the numeral l indicates, in general, the body of my improved loom picker. The loom picker is preferably formed of high grade aluminum and includes an enlarged portion 2 which extends throughout substantially half the length of the body. The body is reduced in width and thickness to define a reduced shuttle driving portion or web 3. It should be understood that, while the body is preferably formed of a special high grade aluminum, any suitable light weight metal may be employed.
The shuttle driving portion 3 of the body I is formed with an enlarged circular end having a bore or socket 4 which extends laterally throughout the major portion of the width of said portion 3. Removably fitted in the bore 4 and extending forwardly thereof is a driving plug 5 which is formed. of relatively soft material such, for example, as rawhide. The plug 5 will, of course, be engageable with the end of the shuttle for driving said shuttle at the forward movement of the picker stick.
The body I is provided, medially of its width, and at the inner of the enlarged portion 2, with a slot or opening 6 which is adapted to accommodate the end of a picker stick, shown in dotted lines at 1, in Figure 2, therethrough. The opening 6 is formed with curved bearing surfaces 8 and 9 at its ends and said opening is formed with straight sides l0 and l I. The hearing surfaces 8 and 9 serve the purpose of permitting free swinging movement of the picker stick I in the slot or opening 6. Injury to the picker stick will thus be prevented and, of course, full swinging movement of said stick will be permitted so that full efficiency will be assured. The result of the maximum efficiency for the picker mechanism will, of course, be that less work for loom fixers will be necessary. Smashes, with resulting cloth damage, will also be greatly reduced, as will be the frequency of picker stick breakings. The bearing surfaces 8 and 9, being curved as shown, will provide three times as much surface for the picker stick as compared with pickers now in use. As stated, a perfect bearing for the picker stick is provided so that injury to said stick will be effectually prevented.
Formed in the enlarged portion 2 of the body I, in spaced relation to the slot or opening 6, is a picker rod opening l2. The picker rod opening extends throughout the entire width of the body and is open at both ends. The picker rod opening removably receives therein a picker rod sleeve I3, and said sleeve slidably receives therein a picker rod l4. Angular guide shoulders having flat bearing surfaces I5 are formed at the junction of the enlarged portion 2 with the reduced portion or web 3, and said guide or bearing surfaces, as best seen in Figure 3, slidably engage the box back shown in dotted lines at l5 in Figure 3. Cramping of the picker 'will be avoided and straight movement of said picker thus assured.
Referrng now to Figure 4 of the drawing, the numeral l6 designates a slightly modified form of driving plug. The driving plug [6 has a relatively large head I! and a reduced portion l8. The plug 16, like the plug 5, may be readily re- Having thus described the invention, what I J continuous curved bearing surfaces extending claim is:
As a new article of manufacture, a. picker for looms comprising a one piece body portion having its opposite ends provided with thickened portions of difierent lengths, one of which has an opening extending entirely therethrough and 20 adapted to receive a picker rod and the other provided with a socket adapted to receive a driving plug, said thickened portions being connected by a flat integral reduced web having its end walls converging in the direction of the socket and defining oppositely disposed angular guide shoulders having flat bearing surfaces for engagement with a loom box, there being a longitudinal slot formed in the long thickened portion adjacent the picker rod receiving opening and adapted to receive a. picker stick with one side wall of the slot disposed in longitudinal alinement with the flat bearing surfaces of the angular guide shoulders, the oppostie end walls of the slot being rounded transversely to form Q the entire width of the long thickened portion l and--intersecting said angular guide shoulders for contact with said picker stick.
