ALBERT ALBERTSON, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY.
IM PROVEM ENT IN BOTTLE-STOPPERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 204,472, dated June 4, 1878; application tiled May 20, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that l, ALBERT ALBEnTsoN, of Jersey City, .in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented an Improvement in Bottle-Stoppers, of which the following is a specification:
This invention is an improvement upon the bottle-stopper described and shown in the Letters Patent issued to me August 29,1876, No. 181,615; and this my present invention consists in a bottle-stopper composed of a tapering anged cap, a hollow, flanged stopper, the internal chamber of which extends upward within and substantially concentric with the cap, and a swinging link for retaining the stopper itself in position upon the neck of the bottle, the whole constructed and combined in such manner that the internal pressure exerted upon the interior of the hollow stopper is prevented from rupturing or bursting the stopper itself, at the same time that it is enabled to tighten said stopper automatically in its place.
Figure 1 is a side view representing a bottle-stopper made according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view taken in a plane at right angles to that of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a central vertical sectional view of the same.
A is the hollow stopper, which is made of india-rubber, and ot which a is the internal chamber, this stopper having the circumferential liange b. B is a conical or tapering cap, at the lower edge of which is the flange a', resting on the ange b of the hollow stopperA. The internal chamber a of the stopperA extends upward within the cap B, and substantially concentric therewith.
C is a link or loop of wire passing through or holding over the top of the hollow stopper A, and pivoted at its lower extremity b' to a suitable band, D, or like device on the neck of the bottle E.
The parts being constructed and arranged in relation with each other as just described, the hollow stopper A is inserted in, the neck ofthe bottle by placing its lower portion in suitable relation with the mouth thereof, and thence swinging the link or loop C to a vertical position, thereby crowding the lower end of the hollow stopper A into the neck ot' the bottle when the latter is filled with liquid, generating gases which produce internal pressure within the bottle E. These gases lill the chamber A, and, while expanding the lower part of the hollow stopper A against the ad jacent sides of the neck of the bottle, also exert their pressure in the chamber A outward against the coniining-walls of the cap B, the latter restraining and holding the hollow stopper A against the expansive forces of the gases within, and thereby preventing the rupture of the said stopper.
What I claim as my invention is- As an improvement in the bottle-stopper described and shown in the Letters Patent issued to me August 29, 1876, No. 181,615, the herein-described combination of the conical or tapering flanged cap B, the hollow anged stopper A, having the chamber a extending upward within and substantially concentric with the cap B, and the swinging link or loop C, the whole constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
ALBERT ALBERTSON.
