IMPROVEMENT IN SPECTACLE-FRAMES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 204,265, dated May 28, 1878 application filed April 13, 1878.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JACOB F. TRAUB, of Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented an Improvement in Spectacles, of which the followingis a specification:

The nature of my invention relates to new and useful improvements in the construction of spectacle-frames; and the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of the parts, whereby the temple-pieces or springs are more strongly secured to the bows, and by which I am enabled to use a round spring-wire to form said temple-pieces, as more fully hereinafter described.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective of a part of a pair of spectacles, enlarged, the more readily to indicate the arrangement of parts. Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective of the eye and cap. Fig. 3 is an enlarged and detached view of the eye. Fig. 4 is a like view of the cap. Fig. 5 is an exaggerated vertical section through the joint on the line w m in Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is an enlarged vertical central section of the thimble which connects the temple-piece with the eye. Fig. 7 is an enlarged central section of the ball or knob on theend of the temple-piece. Fig. 8 is an enlarged perspective and detached view of the inner side of one of the joint-plates, recessed, as shown, to receive the eye.

In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, A represents a section of spectacle-bows, provided with cars a a, by means of which the temple-pieces B are hinged to the bows. These ears are recessed, as shown at 12, upon their ,inner and adjoining faces, to receive the flattened eye 0 of the bolt d, and the eye is pivotally secured in the chamber formed by said recesses by means of the screw or rivet e. The bolt d passes through a segmental-shaped cap, 0, which, when thepart-s are all in place, is outside the flanges f of the cars a a. A circular recess or countersink, g, is cut into the outer face of the cap 0, surrounding the hole through said cap for the passage of the bolt (1, and into this countersink is fitted the thimble D, internally threaded, as shown in Fig. 6, to engage with the thread upon the bolt 0?. The opposite end of the thimble is also internally threaded to receive and engage with a suitable thread (not shown) upon the end of the temple-piece B, which is made of a piece of drawn spring-wire. The free end of this temple-piece is also threaded to engage with the internally-threaded ball E.

By this construction I am enabled to make a very strong hinge-joint for attaching the temple-piece to the bows-a joint that will be concealed by the cap, and one that enables me to use round drawn wire for the temple-pieces; and by the use of the ball on the end of the temple-pieces, no projections are offered to catch in the hair of the wearer.

The cap, being secured, as described, to the eyebolt and to the thimble, revolves with the parts, the ends of the cap forming stops, which prevent the joint being injured or sprung by the temple-pieces beingopened too far or closed too closely.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In spectacles, the temple-pieces B of drawn round wire, provided with a suitable thread, in combination with an internallythreaded thimble, D, and eyebolt c d, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

2. In spectacles and in combination with the recessed cars a a, the eyebolt c d, rotating within the chamber formed between said ears, the cap 0, and thimble D, substantially as and for the purposes described.

3. In spectacles and in combination with the templepieces B, formed of round-drawn wire, the ball E, substantially as and for the purposes specified.

4. The improved spectacles herein described, consisting of the bows provided with the recessed cars a a, the eyebolt c d, thimble D, round-drawn wire temple-pieces B, and cap 0, constructed and combined to operate, substantially as and for the purposes described.
