This invention relates to en sir humldiner und cleaner.
Anobject of the invention is to provide a. device of this character which subjects en" drown therethrough to the oction or owing water pessing over iilters or screens through which the air is drawn. The owing water carries on' the dirt and 'foreign particles into s, suitable trop so thetthe device is self-cleaning andthe opere,- tion is n continuous one.
A further object is to provide on epperetus of this character which is especially designed for humidiying and cleaning sir passing to e, cerlouretor and 'which utilizes hot wotcr from the cooling system of the motor and causes the water after its action in the apparatus to return to the system after the dirt und foreign particlesv have been deposited into o trop.
A iinther object is to provide en apparatus of this chsracter which compels the nir passing through the seme to psss through s series ci screens which may very in their texture und which ere subjected 'to the ection of noving hot Waiter so that the nir not only passes through the screens, tout through the idowing 'water which carries od the dirt und foreign particles sucked into the device with the sir and operetvnot.
only to humidity the oir, but to clean the e as well, und the flow oi. Water keeps clean the screens through which the sir posses so that the apparatus is in s very real sense self-cleaning.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, eli of which will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.
In. the eccomi@24 drswingv Figure l is a view more or less diagratic illustrating my improved apparatus in operative position relative to an internal combustion engine or motor and its carburetor;
.Figure 2 is o View in. longitudinal section through my improved humidier and cleaner;
Figure 3 is a. view in transverse section on the line 8,`3 of Figure l.
l represents an internal combustion engine or motor having theory radiator 2 and circulating pipe 3 und o, pump fl to maintain a. circulation of water through the jacket of the engine or motor und through the radiator. Reference character 5 indicates any suitable form of carburetor with which the ee is equipped and at the air inlet end of this carburetor my improved device or apparatus is located and will now be described in detail. 'y
t represents e. casing which is somewhat elonvgstedend which muy he cylindrical in form and muy comprise sepersble sections secured together es shovqn et 'l or y he mode in any other wey desired. This casing t has sn sir inlet t et one end and en oir outlet i? et its other end which may be operatively connected im any desired manner `with the inlet i@ oi the carburetor il represents u weten' supply pipe Lulrich is connected to the engine or motor et s point Where the Water in the system is hottest it is desirable to supply this water to my spp :rotos es hot es possibledo rlhe pipe il extends along the upper portion of the casing ii und supplies Water to e, plurality of disk-like screens i2, yFliese screens iii msyylce de of any desired meterisl and they ure preferably reinforced sud held tout by means of wires it or other more or less rigid materiel et the edges of the disf: like screens. The pipe il extends through openings iii in the upper portions of the screens and unter nous from outlets it Iin the pipe over these screens. Sonie of these. outlets y constitute mere orinces es indiceted and others may constitute nipples end certain of the screens muy constitute e e clrness of msteriel ond may he of wire mesh, end this is psrticulerly true ofA the screens adjacent the inlet ends of the eptus as these screens will stop larger perticles end foreign metter before reaching the nnerv mesh. screens throughout the major" portion of the casing. @The screens i2 throughout the major portion of the cosinery constitute two thicmiesses oi materiel with the discharge orices or nozsies l5 of the pipe il discharging between thm ss cleerly shown in Figure 2 of the drawing, so that the waiter escaping from the pipe not only seturotes the screens, but flows freely over them, and this water more or less dirty escapes through an outlet it et one end of the casing. This outlet communicates Witlf e trap tl having a removable portion @El `which may be emptied from time `to time and the trap il is connected to s return pipe le connecting the same' with the pump so that when the pump is working` the circulation is insured through the apparatus. To facilitate the escape or the water, I.prefer ably provide the casing with e, tapering gutter 2t st its lower portion communicating at its outlet end with the outlet it.
The operation of the apparatus is as follows:
Hot water nowing from pipe i l passes over the screexm .or nlters I 2 and the air entering at 8 ows through these str of water so that al1 dirt and foreign matter is removed from the air and is carried off and deposited in the trap I1. The air is humidified by the action of its contact with the hot water and passes to the carburetor clean, humidied, and slightly heated.
While I have illustrated and described what I believe to be a preferred embodiment of my invention, it is obvious that various changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of parts without departing from my invention, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise details set forth but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appendedl claim.
I claimt An air cleaner and humidifier including an elongated casing,` a. water pipe extending through the upper portion of the casing, disk-like screens in the casing having openings receiving the pipe. certain of said screens constituting two thicknesses of material, and said pipe having outlets directing Water between the thicknesses of ma- 10 terial.
