1 Claim.
My invention relates to a. shipping case and particularly to one formed of berboard or similar bendable material which will have the necessary strength and rigidity to enable it to withstand the usage to which it is subjected when used in shipping and storing heavy and bulky articles such as meat products.
One object of my invention is to provide a shipping case in which the body of the case is formed from a single sheet of material and is provided with vertical reinforcements to prevent deformation of the case under pressure, as for example, when several filled cases are piled one u-pon another.
Another object of my invention is to provide a case body which may be made smooth on either the exterior or interior Without any change in the form oi the blank from which it is fabricated.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate a shipping case made in accordance with my invention, Figure lis a side view, partly in elevation and partly in section; Figure 2 is a section taken on the line 2 2 of Figure 1; Figure 3 is a section taken on the line 3 3 of Figure 4; Figure 4 is.a section taken on the line 4 4 of Figure 2; Figure 5is a side elevation of one end of the body, the cover being removed; Figure 6 is a plan view of the blank from which the body of the case is formed; Figure 7 is a view similar to Figure 3, but showing a modification, Figure 8 is a. section taken on the line 8 8 of Figure 7; and Figure 9 is a section taken on the line 9 9 of Figure 7.
` The body of the case is formed of a single blank of fiberboard or similar bendable material of the shape shown in Figure 6. This blank comprises a bottom panel I0, a pair of side panels II, and a pair of end panels I2. I3 are formed at the junction of the bottom and side panels and crease lines I4 at the junction of the bottom and end panels. Extending laterally from each end panel are a pair of reinforcing panels I5, .crease line I6 being formed at the junction of the panels. The end panels are each provided with an end ap I1, crease lines I8 being provided at the junction of the panels and aps. Each of the flaps -I1 is provided at each `end with a. tab I 9 adapted to be bent at right angles thereto on a crease line 20. The reinforcing panels are each provided with flanges 2I adapted to be bent over parallel with the panel along a crease line 22, and the side panelsare each provided with a ange 23 adapted to be Referring first to the form of case shown in Figures 1 to 5, the side panels are first bent up at right angles to the bottom panel. The end panels are then bent up and the reinforcing panels folded over on the side panels, the ilanges 2l being rst folded inwardly to form vertical reinforcing struts. The end flaps are then folded down parallel with the end panels, the tabs I9 being folded over against the reinforcing panels I5. Finally, the flanges 23 are folded over outwardly and the parts secured together by staples 25 or by any other suitable means. The case is completed by a telescopic cover 26 provided at each end with a tongue 21 adapted to be tucked into locking position between the end panel and the flap I'I. The cover shown in Figure 1 is like 'that illustrated and described in Patent No.
matter, the case is formed as shown in Figures 7, 8 and 9. In this form the same blank is used but the end panels are first bent up at right angles to the bottom and then the reinforcing panels are bent back at right angles thereto, the fianges 2| being folded in the reverse direction to that previously described. The flaps I1 are now folded down on the outer faces of the end panels and the tabs I9 laid against the reinforcing panels. Finally, the flanges 23 are folded over but in this case being folded inwardly instead of outwardly as in the first described form. The parts are secured together by staples as previously described.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
In a shipping case, the combination with integral bottom, side, and end panels, of reinforcing panels carried by the end panels and extending inwardly therefrom adjacent the side panels, andflanges on the free ends of said reinforcing panels, said flanges being folded over parallel to the reinforcing panels to form vertical struts positioned intermediate the ends of the case and extending substantially throughout its height, said struts lying between the side panels and the reinforcing panels.
GEORGE E. WHALLEY.
