Description

ITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
O. CHARTER, OF BRISTOL, CONNECTICUT.
SASI-I-FASTENER.
Specicaton of Letters Patent No. 20,405, dated. June 1, 1858.
T t1 all whom fit may concern.'
Be it known that I, OLIVER CHARTER, of Bristol, county of Hartford, and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash Lifts and Fasteners; and I do hereby declare that the same is described and represented in the following specification and drawings, and to enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same I Will proceed to describe the construction and operation thereof, referring to the drawings, in Which the same letters indicate like parts in each of the figures.
The nature of this improvement consists in uniting the lift With the fastener in such a manner as to operate at or near the center of the Window.
In the accompanying drawings A is a sash lift, and is a part of the plate G.
B is a spring let into the edge of the sash and secured at one end by a screw.
C, is the catch on the end of the spring.
D, is an angle lever' and is secured on the back of the plate G.
E is a connecting rod, from the catch end of the spring to the loiver end of the anglelever D.
F, is a thumb piece, made so as to slide freely on the back side of the lift plate, and is connected to the end of the horizontal portion of the lever D.
Now by placing the fingers under the lift A, and the thumb upon the thumb piece F, the sash may be raised and lowered perfectly free. If t-he thumb be removed the sash will be fastened suiiicient to hold it up at any given height, when not exposed to a jarring motion Without cutting notches in the jamb of the Window, but when so exposed it Will be bestt-o cut notches as also in all cases, to fasten the Window down. It is proposed sometimes to make theln double acting by a double lever arrangement, or by putting two plates on to a Window at such distance from each edge of the sash, as to be convenient to use with both hands, and also add to the appearance upon the sash, as for instance the center of the outside lights of glass.
It is Well understood that lifts have been used for the purpose of raising Windows and also that spring fasteners have been used to hold and fasten the Window. Such therefore is not claimed, but
Vhat I do claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The construction and arrangement of the lift A, spring B, thumb piece F, lever D, and connection rod E, operating substantially in the manner and for the purpose as described.
