Aprifi 2E, M E H DISPLAY CARTON Filed Jan. 19, 1955 FYZfC/ZGZ E 15 0!? Patented Apr. 21, 1936 UNITED STATES DISPLAY CARTON Mitchel E. Holy, Posen, Ill.,.assignor.toContainer Corporation ofAmerica, Chicago, Ill., a corporation of Delaware Application January 19, 1935, Serial No. 2,503
3 Claims.
This invention relates to display cartons and more particularly to a carton of this type which is adapted to be formed in a relatively flat shape so as to hold a plurality of flat articles such as rubber jar rings, and at the same time to disclose the contents through a display opening in one of the larger panels.
One object of the present invention is to so form the display carton that it will have sufficient strength and rigidity to satisfactorily retain the contents as well to minimize the waste in cutting out the carton from sheet stock.
Other and more specific objects will be brought out as the description proceeds.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the preferred embodiment of a carton forming the subject matter of the present invention;
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on line 2--2 of Figure 1; and
Figure 3 is a plan view of the blank.
The container of the present invention in its preferred form comprises a tubular carton 5 of suitable sheet material, such .as folding boxboard,
which may be conveniently formed from a blank cut and scored as indicated in Fig. 3. The carton 5, as shown, comprises a top panel or wall 6, a bottom panel or wall 1, side walls 8 and 9 and end walls I0 and II. An attaching flap l2, preferably located on the bottom Wall 1, is provided by means of which the wall I may be secured to the side wall 8 by adhesive or other well known means. It is thus apparent that the carton may be collapsed fiat and may be expanded to tubular form.
The end walls I0 and I I are arranged to swing upon the hinge lines located in the plane of the top panel 6, and these walls are provided respectively with tuck flaps I3 and M, which are insertable into the carton so as to lie flat against the bottom Wall 1.
The top panel 6 is preferably cut away at l5 along a line l6 terminating at a point where the adjacent corners of walls 9 and I0 meet and extending at an inclination across the carton and terminating at a point within the inner edge of end wall II. In the present instance the line of cutaway is shown as extending to the point where the adjacent walls 8 and II meet. The mid-portion of the cutaway line l6 may follow any suitable contour, such for example as indicated at I1, this feature however being relativelyunimportant insofar as the present invention is concerned.
In the forming of the carton as above described,
means are provided for joining the adjacent ends of the side and end walls at the corner or corners of the carton where the walls would otherwise lack support due to the cutout in the top panel. For this purpose the side and end walls are connected by foldable corner members which are 5 adapted to be folded so as to lie within the carton in its set-up condition. While only those corners at which one or both of a side or end wall are unattached to the top panel require a foldable corner piece, it has been found desirable 10 to provide such corner pieces at all four corners of the carton. These corner pieces are indicated respectively at I8, I 9, 20, and 2|, each being formed in two sections 18a, I811; I911, I922; 20a, 20b; and 2m, Zlb, each of which sections are 15 separated from each other and from their attached wall by score lines as indicated.
When the carton is set up the corner members will be folded so as to lie flat on the interior of the box and preferably against the end walls I0 20 and H, see Fig. 2.
Reference to the walls of the carton by the terms top, bottom, side, and end are to be understood to be merely for the purpose of convenience of description and not as limiting 25 the carton to a particular manner of use.
From the foregoing it is apparent that the present invention provides a display carton of sturdy construction which may be cut economically from sheet material and formed in the manner of an 30 ordinary tubular, tuck-in type carton so that the contents may be conveniently inserted edgewise into the carton. The corner members of the carton provide the hinge for one or both ends of one or both of the end Walls and when the carton 35 is set up these corner members afford the requisite support for the end walls regardless of the fact that one or both ends of these walls may be otherwise unsupported.
While the present description sets forth a preferred embodiment of the invention, certain changes may be made in the construction without departing from the spirit of the invention, and it is therefore desired that the present embodiment be considered in all respects as illus- 45 trative and not restrictive, reference being had to the appended claims rather than to the foregoing description to indicate the scope of the invention.
I claim: V
1. A display carton comprising top, bottom, and 50 two side walls connected in tubular form, end walls for the carton, flaps on the end walls adapted to be tucked in along the bottom of the carton, the top wall being cut away along a line terminating at diagonally opposite corners of the car- 55 ton, and such cut away portion extending from such line to two of the sides, and diagonally foldable corner members joining the end walls to the side walls adjacent the corners where the line of cut of the top panel meets the meeting corners of the end and side walls, said diagonally foldable corner members being adapted to lie in folded position within the carton when same is set up.
2. A display carton comprising top, bottom, and two side Walls connected in tubular form, end walls for the carton, flaps on the end walls adapted to be tucked in along the bottom of the carton, the top wall being cut away along a line terminating at one corner of the carton and extending across the carton to .a point included in one edge of the side wall opposite to such corner, and a diagonally foldable corner member joining the end and side wall adjacent the corner where the cut away portion terminates, said diagonally foldable corner member being adapted to lie in folded position within the carton when same is set up.
3. A display carton comprising top, bottom and two side walls connected in tubular form, end walls for the carton, flaps on the end walls adapted to be tucked in along the bottom of the carton, the top wall being cut away to display the contents and leaving certain corners of the side and end walls unsupported from the top of the carton, and diagonally foldable corner members joining the end walls and side walls at such of the corners which are so unsupported, said corner members being foldable within the carton when the same is set up.
