Description
1965 v M. GOLDSHOLL 3,198,417
DISPLAY CARTON Filed Oct. 30, 1963 INVENTOR.
fhizgiz United States Patent 3,198,417 DISPLAY CARTON Morton Goldsholl, Chicago, Ill., assignor to Vienna Sausage Manufacturing Company, Chicago, Ill., a corporation of Illinois Filed Oct. 30, 1963, Ser. No. 320,178 2 Claims. (Cl. 229-38) This invention relates, a generally, to display cartons and it has particular relation to such cartons for food products, such as meat and the like, that are individually packaged in transparent plastic containers the ends of which are irregular and thus may be unsightly.
Among the objects ofthis invention are: To provide for packaging individually wrapped food products, such as sausages and the like, in such manner that portions thereof are visible while the ends of the plastic containers therefor are concealed; to provide a foldable one piece paperboard blank for this purpose; to include in the blank a flap that is hinged to the distal edge of the top wall of the carton which conceals the upper ends of the plastic containers the upper portions of the contents of which are visible through an opening in the front wall of the carton; and to hold the fiap in place by frictional engagement of its ends with inwardly deformed upper end portions of the side walls of the carton.
In the drawing:
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of a display carton of foldable paperboard constructed in accordance with this invention and showing how a meat product can be positioned therein, the meat product being shown in three individual packages.
FIG. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken generally along the line 2-2 of FIG. 1.
FIG. 3 is a sectional view taken generally along the line 3-3 of FIG. 2.
FIG. 4 is a top plan view of a foldable paperboard blank that can be employed for forming the carton shown in the preceding figures.
Referring now particularly to FIG. 1 of the drawing, it will be noted that the reference character designates, generally, a carton of foldable paperboard or like material that provides a display package for transparent plastic containers 11 for a food product such as sausage. In the particular illustration shown three plastic containers 11 are positioned in the carton 10 and they are arranged in conventional manner to closely surround an elongated meat product having a rectangular cross section. Each plastic container 11 can be formed from a pair of sheets of heat scalable plastic film with the edges extending well beyond the meat product and heat sealed to provide a complete seal along the four sides. While the side and bottom laterally extending portions of the plastic containers 11 can be folded over and concealed within the carton 10, the upper end, indicated at 12 in FIG. 2, cannot readily be folded over and concealed. It is irregular in shape and is unsightly. Accordingly, it detracts from the otherwise good appearance of the packaged product. In accordance with the present invention provision is made for effectively concealing the upper end 12 of each of the plastic containers 11 from the view of the prospective purchaser.
In FIG. 4 there is shown, generally, at 15 a plan View of a paperboard blank that can be employed for for.. ing the carton 10 in such manner as to provide a suitable display for the containers 11 containing the food product and at the same time sealing the upper end 12 of the each of them.
The paperboard blank 15 includes a front wall 16 that is provided with a trapezoidal opening 17 through which the plastic containers 11 and the product container therein can be displayed. The short base 18 of the trapezoidal opening 17 is located on the lower side and upwardly inclined sides 19-19 extend therefrom. At the ends of the front wall 16 side walls 20-24] are provided along hinge lines 21-21. It will be noted that the upper ends of the the sides 19-19 of the trapezoidal opening 17 intersect the hinge lines 21-21. At the lowerends of the side Walls 20-20 bottom tabs 22-22 are provided along hinge lines 23-23. I
In the completed position of the paperboard blank 15 to form the carton 10 the bottom tabs 22-22 overlie the ends of a bottom wall 24 that is secured along hinge line 25 to a rear wall 26 which, as shown in FIGS. 2 and 3, is parallel to the front wall 16. It will be noted that one of the side walls 2% is secured along hinge line 27 to the rear wall 26. The bottom wall 24 is provided with a bottom flap 28 that extends along the hinge line 29 and is arranged, as shown in FIG. 2, to be tucked inside of the front wall 16 at its lower end. A side flap 30 is secured to the other side wall 20 along a hinge line 31 and it is arranged to be positioned inside of the rear wall 26, as seen in FIG. 3, and to be adhesively secured thereto as indicated at 32.
When the paperboard blank 15, as thus far described, is folded to form the carton 10, an elongated container open at the top is provided having a rectangular horizontal cross section.
At the upper ends of the side walls 20-20 top tabs 34-34 are secured thereto along hinge lines 35-35 which extend downwardly at a slight angle away from perpendiculars to the hinge lines 27 and 31 respectively. In the completed form of the carton 10 the top tabs 34-34 overlie the upper ends of the plastic containers 11 and extend toward each other as indicated in FIG. 3. Because of the inclinations of the hinge lines 35-35, the top tabs 34-34 are inclined downwardly a corresponding extent as indicated in FIG. 2 from the upper edge of the rear wall 26.
A top wall 36 extends along a hinge line 37 from the rear wall 26 so as to overlie the top tabs 34-34 and, since its under surface is juxtaposed to the upper surfaces of the top tabs 34-34, it has a corresponding inclination.
With a view to concealing theupper end 12 of each of the containers 11, 'a top flap 38 is provided along the distal edge of the top wall 36 and can be folded relative thereto along a hinge line 39. In the assembled condition of the carton '11? the top flap 38 extends downwardly and inwardly from the distal edge of the top wall 36 so that its distal edge 41] overlies and bears directly against the upper ends of the plastic containers 11 filled with the food product.
It is desirable that the top flap 38 be held in the concealing position shown in FIGS. 1 and 2 of the drawing. For this purpose crease lines 4-1-41 are formed in the side walls 20-20. They extend from a common point intersection with the hinge lines 35-35 and are inclined downwardly a substantially greater extent so as to intersect with the upwardly inclined sides 19-19 of the trapezoidal opening 17 along the hinge lines 21-21. After the carton 10 has had the containers 11 filled with the food product positioned therein, the top tabs 34-34 are folded over along the hinge lines 35-35 and then the top wall 36 is folded over them and the top flap 38 is swung inwardly through the upper end of the trapezoidal opening 17 to the position shown in FIG. 2. Thereafter portions 42-42 at the upper ends of the side walls 20-20 and between the hinge lines 35-35 and crease lines 41-41 are deformed inwardly in order to engage fric tionally ends 43-43 of the top flap 38.
I .5 What is claimed as new is:
1. A carton formed of foldable paperboard or like rnaterial having an integral wall structure including:
(a) a front Wall having an opening in the upper portion to display the contents of the carton,
(b) side, rear, top and bottom walls,
(0) tabs hinged to the upper ends of said side walls along lines extending downwardly from said rear wall and extending toward each other,
(d) said top wall being hinged to the upper end of said rear wall and extending downwardly therefrom in juxtaposed relation to and overlying said tabs,
(e) a flap hinged to the distal edge of said top wall and extending downwardly and inwardly therefrom and closing off the upper portion of said opening in said front wall,
(f) the upper end of each ide Wall having a crease line extending downwardly from said rear Wall below the hinge line of the respective tab, and (g) that portion of each side wall between said crease line and said hinge line being in frictional engagement with the juxtaposed edge of the flap to hold it in place. 2. The invention, as set forth in claim 1, wherein the hinge line and crease line in each side wall have a common starting point.
