3 Claims.
My present invention relates to plumbing iixtures, and more particularly to an improved double sink.` i
A feature of my invention is the combination into a unitary structure of a plurality of sinls.
Another feature of my invention is the combination into a unitary structure of a plurality of sinks utilizing a common waste outlet.
A further feature of my invention is the combination into a unitari,r structure of a plurality of sinks, and in which structure the dividing wall between the two sinks constitutes a housing chamber for the waste valves, such chamber communicating with a common waste outlet. A still further feature of my lnventionis the utilization of the upper end of the conmion division wall between the two sinks as a bearing member for the waste line valve operating elements.
Other features and novel forms of construction of my device will appear as the description f the invention progresses.

Referring to the drawings, I0 and designate sinks, arranged side by side,and formed integral with each other, and with asplash board I2 arranged along the back edges thereof. Also .formed integral with the sink III and with the splash board I2 is a drain board I3.
The dividing wall between the sink I0 and the sink II is formed of the wall I4 of the sink III and the wall I5 of the sink such walls being spaced apart from each other, and joined integral with a top member I6 at the top ends of the walls I4 and I5. These three elements I4, I5 and I6 define a chamber I1 in which is housed the waste line valves and operating means therefor, and 50 which will be hereinafter described in detail. As
the complete area of the walls I4 and I5 is not utilized in the building of the chamber I1, wall members, as the wall members I8, are used to limit the extent of the chamber I1, and to main- 55 tain such chamber fluid tight. 'I'he lower end of the chamber |1 has a closure bottom I9 formed integral with the walls I4 and I5 and with the wall members I8, such closure bottom I9 being provided with an orifice 20, and to and through which may be attached one end of a Waste line. 5
'I'he chamber I1 is divided into two parts by a baiile plate 2| extending between and formed integral with the walls I4 and I5, and which extends downward beyond the lower .limits of the walls I4 and I5, terminating at any convenient 10 point above the lower wall of the closure bottom I9, see Fig. 4. This dividing wall or baie plate 2| prevents back flow from the chamber I1 from the sink I0 into the sink or vice versa.
In the walls I4 and I5 are formed orifices 22 15 and 23 respectively, which permit flow of waste liquids from the sink I0 and sink into the chamber I1. Both the orifices 22 and 23 are similar in construction, arrangement and purpose, and therefore a description of one of them will 20 suce .in the present case.
Referring to Figs. 2 and 3, a rectangular ring 24 has formed on its outer peripheral edge an angle groove in which is mounted a washer or gasket 25, and a central web 26 of the ring 24 25 is drilled and threaded to receive a fiat head screw 21 passing through a centrally arranged perforation in a screen plate 28, which plate is located on the opposite face of the wall I5 from the ring 24. The screw 21 holds the ring 24 and screen 30 plate 28 in position over and in the orifice 23.
Formed integral with and on one face of the thus spidered ring 24 are wedge shaped guides 29 and 3|), adapted to cooperate with a Wedge shaped gate valve 3|. The wedge shaped gate valve 3| 35 has a face which engages the inner edge of the ring 24, which acts as a valve seat.
Further referring to Figs. 2 and 3, it is obvious that if the wedge shaped gate valve 3| is moved downwardly from the position shown in Fig. 3, that such valve 3| will be moved into engagement with the referred to valve seat onl the inner face of the ring 24, and when the valve 3| reaches its lowermost position, as shown in Fig. 2, the
- valve 3| and seat will be in close association. 45
Such valve 3| is of the shear type, is easy to operate, and is self cleaning. The particular form and function of the improved valve 3| forms'no part of my present invention, being specifically described and claimed in my co-pending application Serial No. 29,904, filed July 5th, 1935.
Formed on the rear face of the valve 3| is a shaft 32 to which is pivotally attached the lower end of a rod 33.l A pin 46 passing through a perforation in the shaft 32 (see Fig. 6) prevents 55 accidental removal of the rod 3,3 from the shaft 132. The upper end of this rod 33 is threaded as indicated at 3, and this threaded end screws into the lower end of an operating handle 35.
The top member II6 joining the walls Idl and l5 does not extend over that portion of the chamber l1 immediately above the orifices 23, such top member I6 being finished off by the projections 36. Between these projections 36 and resting on the upper edge of the walls i4 and I5 is a combined closurel and drain 31. Each combined closure and drain 31 is provided with a plurality of transversely arranged slots 38 and with a perforation 39 and in which perforation the operating handle 3E is a sliding iit. The upper end of the operating handle 35.is shown provided with a knob 40, having a diameter greater than that of the perforation 39, thereby to preclude accidental droppingv of the operating handle 35 through the perforation 39. Formed integral with the rod 33 and below the lower limits of the operating handle 35 is formed a member 4l, this member 4| being of a diameter greater than the diameter of the perforation 39 in the closure member 31, to thereby prevent too great a range of upward movement of the rod 33 and therefore preventing the valve member 3| from being moved out of its position relative to the wedge shaped guides' 29.
The structure above described provides a solution for the difficult problem of assembling two or more sinks and/or basins into a unitary struc ture and with the minimum required amount of piping. Also, the structure above described 'permits the use of pre-fabricated or-factory fabricated wasteline units, and addition all parts of the apparatus are readily accessible for cleaning. Further the utilization of the single com- 'bined waste chamber reduces materially the number of possible leakage points in an apparatus of this type.
Various modications of my invention will readily suggest themselves to those skilled in this art, and I do not therefore limit-myself to the exact structure shown and described, except as pointed out in the appended claims.
I claim:
l. An improved plumbing xture, comprising sinks arranged side byside, said sinks being provided with discharge openings disposed at juxtaposed sides of said sinks, said juxtaposed sides of said4 sinks being spaced by a clearance from one another, an outlet chamber communicating with the interiorof said clearance and with said discharge openings of said sinks, said outlet chamber extending below the bottoms of said sinks and provided thereat with opening means ar-` ranged for connection and communication with lsuitable outlet means, a baie plate extending imperforately from opposite walls of said outlet chamber above the discharge openings of said sinks, said bailie plate 'further extending below said discharge openings of said sinks. and terminating at a location above said opening means of said outlet cl imber, whereby upon discharge of said sinks, singly or plurally, backflow from one sink to the other is precluded.

to thereby form thereat a top wall of the upper r portion ci' the interior of said clearance, the remainder of the upper termination of said clearance being partially closed by depressed wall means, provided with drain openings communieating through said clearance with said outlet chamber for receiving soap or the like.
