Description

' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
roman s. nammcx, or WAUSAU WI SCONSIN.
COCK AND FAUCET.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PORTER S. HAMRIoK, a citizen of the United States, residing at \Vausau, in the county of Marathon and State of Vvisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cocks and Faucets, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention comprehends certain new and useful improvements in cocks and fauc'ets, and relates particularly to an improved combined fixture which will possess all the necessary requisites or characteristics of a basin faucet and drinking fountain.
The invention has for its primary object a simple and efficient fixture of this character the parts of which are so constructed and arranged that the device may be used on an ordinary dispensing faucet for a wash basin or the like, and may also, whenmanipulated as will be hereinafter fully de-' scribed, serve as a sanitary drinking fountain, the fixture being thereby especially valuable for use in school rooms, railway stations, or similar public or quasipublic places.
A further object of the invention is a device of this character the parts of which may be easily manufactured and readily assembled anddisassembled, should it become necessary to repair any of them. .And the invention also aims to generally improve this class of devices and, to render them more useful and commercially desirable.
With these and other objects in View as will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain constructlons, arrangements and combinations of the parts that I shallhereinafter fully describe and claim.
For a full understanding of the invention reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a vertical sectional View of a combined. faucet embodying the improvements of my present invention, parts being.
shown in side elevation; and Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Fig. l.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and designated in the accompanying drawing by like reference characters.
My improved combined fixture includes a faucet 1 which is provided with any desired form of valve, such as that indicated at 2, controlling the passage of water to the longitudinal spout or bore 3. The bore of. the
spout 3 is intersected at its discharge end by a vertically disposed cylindrical passage 4 open throughout its extent and at both ends, and in said passage-there is mounted for rotation the preferably reduced lower end of the curved tubular arm 5 the lower extremity of said arm, where it protrudes downwardly from the passage 4, being exteriorly threaded as indicated at 6 to receive the retaining nut 7, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 1. The arm 5 is formed with i a downwardly facing annular shoulder 8 which is adapted to bear upon the upper side of the spout 3 around the upper end of the' passage 4:. a
The tubular arm 5 is formed within the passage 4., with a preferably obliquely disposed partition 9 extending tliereacrossand in its side walls with a port 10 below said partition and with a port 11 above saidpartition. Preferably the ports lO-and 11 are disposed in diametrical relation to each other and the port 11 is preferably smaller than the port 10. The arm 5 is open from the partition 9 downward so as to form a discharge mouth 12. The upper end of the tubular arm 5 carries a bulbous head 5 which serves as the mouth piece of the drinking fountain and which is specifically described and claimed in my co-pending application for Letters Patent of' the United Specification of Letters Patent. Patented May 28,1912, kpplication filed February 17, 1912. SerialNo. 678,205. I
States, Serial No. 670,029,'filed on or about the 8th day of January 1912.
From the foregoing description in con-. nection with the accompanying drawing the operation of myimproved combination fixture, will be apparent. In the practical use like. thearm 5 is turned to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1,'when, as will be evident, the relatively large port 10 will register with the bore of the spout 3 and hence upon the opening of the faucet by turning the handle of the valve 2 the water will flow freely through the bore 3 and registering port 10 and outwardly through the-downwardly facing discharge mouth 12. When it is desired to use the deof the device, when it is desired to use the fixture as an ordinary basin faucet, or the the bore of the spout 3 and the water will pass upwardly through the tubular arm and out through the head or mouth piece 5. Thus it will be seen that I have provided a very simple and efiicient device, the parts of which maybe easily assembled and disassembled and which will not be liable to get out of order or require any unnecessary attention.
The arm 5 may be easily detached from the spout 3 by merely unscrewing the nut 7.
While the accompanying drawing illustrates what I believe to be the preferred embodiment of my invention it is to be understood that the invention is not limited thereto, but that various changes may be made in the construction, arrangement and proportion of the parts without departing from the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having now fully described my invention what I claim is:
1. A combination fixture of the character describedincluding a faucet provided with a spout having a longitudinal bore and a vertically disposed passage intersecting said bore, and a drinking fountain embodying a tubular arm mounted for a turning movement in said passage, and formed therein in registry with the outlet end of the bore,
formed below the. partition with a relatively large port and above the partition with a.
relatively small port, both of said ports being adapted to register alternately with the bore, the arm being open from the partition downward. I
2. A combinationfixture of the character described, including a faucet provided with a spout having a longitudinal bore and a vertical passage intersecting the bore at the discharge end of the-latter, and a drinking fountain embodying a tubular arm mounted for a turning movement in said passage, the lower extremity of said arm protruding from the lower end of the passage and formed with exterior screw threads, and a nut screwed thereon and engaging the lower side of the spout, the arm being formed with a shoulder bearing upon the outer side of the spout and within said passage with a partition and with of said partition.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
