Description

@will 79 w3@ W. c. HIERHNG Y EMMA-7@ BAG FRAME FiledV ooi l2, 1933 Patented Apr. 7, 1936 UNITED STATES PATET GFFEQE BAG FRAME Application October 12, 1933, Serial No. 693,259
2 Claims.
This invention relates to hand bag frames and more particularly to bag frame members of channel shaped cross section.
Anl object of my invention is to provide plates adapted to be secured to channelled bag frame members having angularly directed flanges which, with the front walls ofthe frame members, constitute suitable openings for securing the bag material in the frame members.
A further object of my invention is to provide a bag frame of channel-shaped cross section, comprising inner and outer walls and a bottom integral therewith, a plate carrying fastening means secured to the bag frame provided with an angularly directed flange which, with the front wall of the frame member, provides a ready means for the insertion of bag material into the frame member.
A further object of my invention is to provide a novel means for securing the latching elements to the frame members without weakening the latter and in a manner that will allow the bag covering material to be readily inserted into and removed from the frame members.
A further object is the provision of a bag frame of the channel type having latching means secured thereto in a simple and inexpensive manner, enabling the latching means to be interchanged conveniently without affecting the frame structure.
These and other advantageous objects, which will later appear, are accomplished by the simple and practical construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and exhibited in the accompanying drawing, forming part hereof, and in which:
Fig. 1 represents a perspective view of a pair of channelled bag frame members, showing my improved plate secured to one of the frame members and a similar plate apart from the complementary frame member, and in position for insertion therein,
Fig. 2 represents an enlarged transverse sectional view of a pair of frame members embodying my invention, showing detailed structural features thereof,
Fig. 3 represents a perspective view of a corner of a bag frame member showing the manner in which the improved plate is secured to the inner wall of the frame member,
Fig. 4 represents a perspective fragmentary view of a hand bag embodying a form of my invention in which the plates are secured not only to the horizontal portions of the frame (Cl. G-29) members but also to the leg members thereof, and
Fig. 5 represents a fragmentary side elevational View; partly in section, of a corner of a bag frame embodying my invention.
Referring to the drawing, the numerals l and 2 indicate a pair of hingedly connected bag frame members, each frame member being made from suitable material to present, in cross-section, an outwardly disposed channel comprising an inner wall 3 and an outer wall l and a bottom 5 integral therewith. The frame members each comprise a horizontal portion 5 and leg portions 'l preferably hingedly connected at 3 in any desired or convenient manner.
The angularly iianged plates 9 embodying my invention are preferably secured to the bottom of the frame members adjacent the inner walls 3 thereof, by any suitable means, such as, for example, by providing the plates with depending lugs Ill adapted to be passed through aligned apertures l l in the bottom portions of the frame members and then clinched over (see Figs. 2 and 5). The plates 9 are provided with angularly shaped tabs which may be struck up from the material of the plates, as is the tab E2, or may be formed apart from the plates and secured thereto by soldering or by any other suitable means as is the tab E20. or, if desired, the tabs may be formed of an extension of the material of the plates suitably bent as is the tab i222. These tabs, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, snugly abut the outer wall Il of the frame members and serve to reenforce the plates and prevent distortion thereof when the latching members I3, which may be secured to the plates in any suitable or convenient manner, are engaged and disengaged.
Any suitable or convenient form of latching members may be employed, the particular forms shown in the drawing being for the purpose of illustration only.
In Fig. 1, I have shown the plate 9 provided with four tabs but this number may be increased or decreased as desired within the scope of my invention.
The plates 9 are inwardly offset toward each other at 9', adjacent the outermost edges of the inner walls cf the frame members, so that when the frame members are closed, as shown in Fig; 2, the offset portions of the plates will be in snug abutting engagement with each other and no space will be visible between the plates from the outside of the bag.
The bending of the plates 9 imparts considerable strength and rigidity to the plates.
While I have shown, in Fig. l, the plates 9 as comprising a single strip of material secured to the bottom of the horizontal portions 6 of the frame members, the plates may, if desired, be suitably cut and bent to provide similar plate sections I9 which may be secured to the legs 'I of the frame members; the plate sections I9 may be integral with the main plate 9 or may be formed separate thereirom; in the latter case the plate 9 and the plate sections I9 will be suitably mitered at their abutting corners as shown in Fig. 5.
In operation, tne plates are secured to the frame members as described. The outer Walls 4 of the frame members are preferably curved or outwardly directed (see Figs. 2 and 3) so. that the bag material may be easily inserted into the frame members through the opening formed by the edges of the angularl/ directe-d anges l5 of the plates and the outer Walls i of the frame members. The outer walls 4 of the frame members may then be inwardly clinched, as shown in Fig. 2, to securely hold the bag material in the channel of the frame members.
As only the angularly directed flanges l5 of the plates, and not the frame members, are visible when the bag is closed (see Fig. Il), the plates 9 or only the angularly directed iianges l5 thereef may be provided with any desired finish or color and will present a neat and rich appearance, and, if desired, the frame members may be given a different nish or color so that when the bag is opened, there will be presented an esthetic contrast or" nishes or colors of the plates and the frame members. The plates 9 are interchangeable and may be carried in stock for use. on short notice, on any desired or selected frames.
My invention is adapted for use with bag frames of semi-circular outline, or of the wide, inverted U-type of frame shown in the drawing, and in fact, with bag frames of any outline, it being merely necessary to shape the plates 9 to conform to thel outline of the frame members.
The invention enables the bag frame latching elements to be secured to the bag frame members Without weakening the latter and without impeding the insertion of the bag material in the frame members, and enables the bag material, if desired, to be removed from the frame members for repairs without removing the latching elements.
The foregoing disclosure is to be regarded as descriptive and illustrative only, and not as restrictive or limitative of the invention, of which obivously an embodiment may be constmcted including many modifications, without departing from the general scope herein indicated and denoted in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a bag frame member having an inner and an outer wall and a bottom, a plate provided at its upper edge with an outwardly extending ange, and at its lower edge, with downwardly extending securing means for securing said plate to the bottom of the frame member, said plate being further provided on one side, with outwardly and upwardly extending reenforcing means adapted to engage the inner side of the outer wall of the frame member, the edge of the outwardly extending flange, together with the edge of the outer wall of the bag frame member forming an opening for the insertion of bag covering material into the frame member.
2. In a bag frame having an outwardly opening channelled frame member, a plate abutting the inner side of the inner wall of the frame member, means for attaching said plate to the bottom of the channelled frame member, said plate being provided at its upper edge with a flange extending outwardly toward the outer wall of the frame member, said flange being substantially parallel with the bottom of the frame member and the free edge of the flange being spaced from the free edge of said outer wall, and outwardly and upwardly extending means integral with said plate engaging the inner surface of the outer wall of the frame member.
