Description

S. OLDBERG March 31, 1936.
SILENCER Filed June 17, 1955 INVENTOR4 ATTORNEY.
IIIIIIIIIII. :IIxdLI: I :.I.::.:.::-::::---...
,non IIITIN Patented Mar. 31, 1936 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
This application relates to silencers and more particularly to silencers of the sound wave attenuating type.
The principal object of'the present invention is to provide a silencer wherein the exhaust gases travel in a straight line through the silencer with no baille or deflection and wherein the silencer, though composed of but three shells with no intermediate longitudinal barriers, will provide two separate resonator chambers for the silencer; and it is also an object, in the construction of such a silencer, to rigidify the entire construction so as to eliminate undesirable characteristics.
Other objects of the invention will be readily understood and appreciated upon reference to the following detailed description of an embodiment of the same and upon reference to the appended drawing, whose Fig. 1 shows an embodiment in longitudinal section; and whose Fig. 2 is a transverse section on line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing, it will be seen that there is shown a silencer including a plurality of relatively telescoped shells I0, II, and I2 having open ends closed by end headers I4 and I5.
The inner shell is open from header to header to provide a through passage for exhaust gases and is covered with a plurality of minute closely spaced perforations I6 which provide a communication between the interior of the inner shell and the space between the inner and intermediate shells, which space contains a series of conical diaphragms I'I.
The intermediate shell is provided with large openings I8 and I9 which provide communication between the interior of the intermediate shell and the relatively isolated spaces 20 between the intermediate and the outer shell.
These spaces are isolated by virtue of the engagement between the intermediate shell and the outer shell, which is oval, at the diametrically 10 opposed tangential lines 2|, and such engagement, in addition to providing two relatively isolated resonator chambers 20, also tends to rigidify the silencer by virtue of the fact that the intermediate shell acts as a strut between opposed 15 sides of the oval outer shell, which strut is reinforced by the diaphragms and the inner shell.
Now having described the invention and a preferred embodiment of the same, reference will be had to the claim which follows for a deter- 20 mination of the scope of the invention.
I claim:
In a silencer, an outer shell of substantially oval cross section having broad sides and narrow edges, a shell of substantially circular cross sec- 25 tion disposed therein and connecting the opposed broad sides of the outer shell and dividing the interior of the latter into two relatively isolated spaces, each opposite portion of the inner shell having a hole which communicates the interior 30 of the inner shell with each of these spaces.
