Description

Patented Mar. 24, 1936 PATENT OFFICE CARD HOLDING DEVICE FOR TYPEWRITERS Samuel Palley,
Worcester, Mass.
Application January 10, 1934, Serial No. 706,078
6 Claims.
This invention relates toI a sheet or card-holding device for typewriters and more particularly to a holder which enables typewriting on the bottom portion of sheets or cards such as used in v visible index systems.
The modern visible index systems now used in business oices and factories require the typing of index data on the bottom line or space in a predetermined location on a sheet of paper or card in order Athat the index data may clearly be visible when the sheet or cards are assembled in the le. These sheets or cards have, in some cases, been typed with considerable diiculty by inserting the sheets or cards individually in the typewriter, aligning each individual sheet or card in the machine so that the index data will be located in the desired space. This operation requires considerable time per sheet or card by an experienced operator. Even with careful positioning the data is frequently skewed or not in the desired location.
It is the primary object of this invention to provide a simple inexpensive device which may be used on any standard typewriters, without alteration of the machine, for rapidly typewriting on the bottom line or a predetermined portion of successive sheets or cards.
It is another object of this invention to provide a flexible sheet-holding or card-holding device for typewriters which is adapted to be rolled around a typewriter platen and held in position to locate successive sheets or cards to be typed in a predetermined position.
Other objects will be apparent from the following disclosure.
One embodiment of this invention has been illustrated in the drawing in which like reference numerals indicate like parts:
Fig. l is a perspective view of the holder in position partially surrounding a typewriter roll or platen with a sheet or card in position.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the holder.
Fig. 3 is a similar plan view with a card in position on the holder.
Fig. 4 is a cross sectional view taken approximately on the line 4 4 of Fig. 3.
'I'he sheet or card-holding device, as illustrated in the drawing, comprises a sheet of flexible material such as a sized cloth or any other suitable exible material. In the preferred construction, as illustrated in the drawing, the holder comprises a sheet of exible or semi-flexible material II) folded at the lower edge II to form a back I2 and a front I3. I'he front I2 and back I3 are held together at their side edges to form an integral flat holder by means of a row of stitches I4 and I5 or may, if desired, be cemented or otherwise xed together.
A row of stitches I6 across the holder serves to form a pocket I1 in the upper portion of the holder. The lower portion of the holder serves as a exible flap I8 which is adapted to be wrapped around a typewriter platen I9 as indicated in Fig. 1. Y
A window or aperture 20 is formed in the front of the sheet receiving holder pocket II which is preferably located to expose a predetermined portion of a sheet or card 22 to be typed. The stitching forms a lip 23 which serves to locate the lower edge of the sheet or card relative to the aperture 20. This lip may, as illustrated, extend across substantially the entire width of the holder to locate the lower edge of a sheet or card. The rows of stitches I4 and I5 which form the pocket I'I may also serve as a guide or guides to position a sheet or card to be typed relative to the pocket.
The window or aperture 20 preferably does not extend entirely across the width of the pocket. It is essential to provide guiding and supporting portions 25 and 26 which are preferably formed as integral parts of the front I8 of the pocket II between each end of the window or aperture 20 and the stitchings I4 and I5 respectively. These guides 25 and 26 serve to guide and support the corners and edges 'of the sheets or cards as the lower edge of the card passes across the aperture, and serve to support the sheet or card during typing.
The sheet or card-holder is provided with an edge portion 21 outside the stitching I4. The edge portion 21 is preferably of sufficient width so that the holder may be positioned around the typewriter platen and the platen moved to the extreme right hand position with portion 21 still remaining supported beneath the scale guide which is associated with the typewriter platen.
The operation of the device or holder is readily apparent from the foregoing disclosure. The holder is inserted in a standard typewriter in the same manner that paper is inserted. The holder is adjusted so that the window or aperture 20 and lip 23 are located to position the sheet or card to be typed so that a line or lines may be typed on the sheet or card in a predetermined location, such, as for example, on the bottom line or portion of the sheet or card.
The holder or device is then left in this adjusted position in the typewriter so that succes- CJI sive sheets or cards to be typed may be inserted in the pocket I'I from the top and aligned by lip I6 and guides I4 or I5. The sheet or card may then be typed, after which it may be rapidly removed and replaced with successive sheets or cards.
In the use of this holder, the typewriter platen may remain in an operating position with the window or aperture 20 always in operative relation with the type guides, so that successive sheets or cards may be slipped vertically into and out of the pocket before andI after typing. Or, if de sired in use on certain typewriters, the sheets or cards may be inserted in the pocket II when the typewriter platen, with the holder in adjusted position, is in the extreme right hand position. After loading the sheet or card in the pocket, the platen may then be rapidly positioned for typing by use of the typewriter tabulating device.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentis:
