Abstract
A writing materials holder for use in a typewriter having a relatively hard platen, to hold writing materials which have stencil portions, such as foil, which are permanently deformed or embossed with the impression of the type when struck thereby. The holder is laminated to form a pocket between a pair of layers and within which is received a thin, flexible and resilient cushioning sheet which facilitates deforming the foil when typed. A lip is formed along the pocket for receiving and holding writing materials in juxtaposition over the cushioning sheet for movement about the platen with the holder. In the preferred form of the invention, the holder comprises a cylindrical member positionable about the platen of the writing machine and of a diameter greater than the diameter of the platen so as to loop outwardly about the platen. The sides of the pocket at the edge of the cylindrical member are open to permit replacement of the cushioning sheet.

wamnc MATERIALS nouma BACKGROUND AND SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION This invention relates to a holder for writing materials to be passed about a platen on a typewriting machine, and, more particularly, the invention relates to a generally cylindrical holder intended to be positioned about a typewriter platen and adapted to receive undersized forms, particularly foil cards" on which is typed names and addresses or other information which must be duplicated for subsequent multiple transactions by using the card.
Many stencil devices, such as foil cards," presently are being used and on which is typed information or identification material whereby the stencil or foil card may be stored and subsequently used periodically to print the information on the card repeatedly on various forms or other materials. Problems often are caused in typing such stencils or foil-type cards because of the relative hardness of many typewriter platens which do not have sufiicient resiliency or give" and permit the foil to be deformed or embossed with he impression of the type when struck thereby. This is particularly true when using electric typewriters which have a fixed or predetermined striking force regardless of the pressure exerted on the keys by the typist. Therefore, in order to have an adequate deformation of the foil, a cushion must be provided between the foil and the platen to provide sufficient resiliency to permit the foil to be embossed with the impression of the type. The present invention is directed to this problem and is designed to provide a writing materials holder with a built in cushioning means so as to both hold the stencil or foil card as well as provide the necessary cushioning effect.
It is, therefore, the principal object of this invention to provide an improved writing materials holder especially adapted for use with stencil type writing materials.
Another object of the invention is to provide a writing materials holder for use in a typewriter having a relatively hard platen, to hold writing materials which have stencil portions, such as foil or the like, which are permanently deformed or embossed with the impression of the type when struck thereby. The holder includes a thin, flexible body portion for positioning about the platen of a writing machine, for rotational movement therewith. A thin, flexible and resilient cushioning sheet is positioned and held on the body portion for movement therewith, and means are provided on the body portion for holding the writing material in juxtaposition over the cushioning sheet for movement with the body portion, with the cushioning sheet disposed between the platen and the writing material to pennit the stencil portion of the writing material to be deformed when struck by the type of the writing machine.
A further object of the invention is to provide a writing materials holder as set forth in the preceding paragraph wherein the means for holding the writing material in juxtaposition with the cushioning sheet comprises a lip fonned on the body portion with the base of the lip comprising an aligning means and being disposed generally parallel to the axis of the platen when the holder is positioned properly thereabout. The lip is disposed generally along one edge of the cushioning sheet so that the writing material may be edge inserted under the lip against the base thereof to align the writing material with the platen, with the writing material overlying the cushioning sheet. Preferably, the holder is laminated and includes an outer cover layer and an inner backing layer between which is sandwiched the cushioning sheet.
In the preferred embodiment of the invention, the body portion comprises a cylindrical member positionable about the platen of the writing machine for rotational movement therewith. The cylindrical member has a diameter greater than the diameter of the platen and engages a portion of the platen and loops outwardly about the balance of the platen. The cylindrical member has a transverse joint generally parallel to the axis of the member and the platen, with the portions of the cylindrical member adjacent the joint overlapped to form an exposed lip under which the writing material is edge inserted to align the material with the platen of the writing machine. The lip is disposed generally along the edge of the cushioning sheet so that the writing material overlies the cushioning sheet. The cylindrical member is laminated, as set forth above, to form a pocket for receiving the cushioning sheet and the sides of the pocket are opened to permit replacement of the cushioning sheet.
Other objects, features and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing.
DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWING FIG. 1 is a perspective view, on a reduced scale from actual size, of one form of the writing materials holder of this invention, with the joints of the cylindrical member secured by an adhesive;
FIG. 2 is a perspective view similar to that of FIG. 1 showing another form of the invention wherein the joints of the cylindrical member are secured by lines of stitching or sewing;
FIG. 3 is a partial front elevation view of the holder positioned about the platen of a typewriting machine and holding a foil card in registry and alignment with the holder and with the platen;

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION The writing materials holder of the present invention may be used with a wide variety of stencil type devices, but the invention is shown herein in the form of a cylindrical ember which is especially adapted for utilization with undersized stencil devices such as foil cards, generally designated C and which include a frame 10 which surrounds and mounts a stencil portion 12 which, as illustrated in the drawing, comprises deformable metal foil. The foil, when typed, is permanently deformed or embossed with the impression of the type when struck thereby. This invention pertains particularly to providing a writing materials holder which incorporates a cushioning means which is held behind the stencil or foil portion 12, between the held card C and the typewriter platen P.
The preferred form of the writing materials holder of this invention is comprised of a relatively thin, sufficiently flexible material resistant to tearing, and embodies an elongated cylindrical, laminated body portion, generally designated 14, which is positionable about the platen P of a writing machine for rotational movement therewith. The cylindrical member I4 has a diameter greater than the diameter of the platen P and engages a portion of the platen P and loops outwardly about the balance of the platen P. The cylindrical member 14 has at least one transverse joint 16 (two are shown in the drawing) which is formed generally parallel to the axis of the cylindrical member 14 and thus parallel to the axis of the typewriter platen P. In the form of the invention shown in FIG. I, the joints 16 are secured by adhesive. In the form of the invention in FIG. 2, the joints 16 are secured by lines 18 of stitching or sewing.
As stated above, the cylindrical member I4 is laminated and, referring to the detailed views of FIGS. 4 and 5, includes an outer cover layer 22 fabricated of thin plastic sheeting and an inner backing member 24 fabricated of tear-resistant paper sheeting or the like. The layers 22 and 24 are joined along the overlapped joint 16 to form pockets between the joints l6 and between the layers 22, 24. Between the layers 22, 24 and within the pocket formed thereby and by the joints 16 is disposed a thin, flexible and resilient cushioning sheet 26 fabricated of rubber or like resilient material to provide sufficient cushioning between the foil 12 and the relatively hard typewriter platen P to permit the foil 12 to be permanently deformed or embossed with the impression of the type 7 (FIG. 5) when struck by the type 7 as illustrated in FIG. 5. The impression of the type 7, shown generally at the arrow 30 in FIG. 5 is embossed in the foil l2 because the cushioning sheet 26 permits deformation as shown by the compression of the cushioning sheet, as at 32 in FIG. 5.
It should be pointed out that the sides of the cylindrical member 14, between the layers 22 and 24, are open so that the pocket formed thereby for receiving the cushioning sheet 26 is open ended to permit replacement of the cushioning sheet 26.
While the invention is shown herein as embodied in a cylindrical holder, it should be pointed out that the novel concepts of this invention are equally applicable to other types or shapes of writing materials holders.
The foregoing detailed description has been given for clearness of understanding only and no unnecessary limitations should be understood therefrom as some modifications will be obvious to those skilled in the art.
I claim:
1. A writing materials holder for use in a typewriter having a relatively hard platen, to hold writing materials which have stencil portions, such as foil or the like, which are permanently deformed or embossed with the impressions of the type when struck thereby, comprising: a thin, flexible body portion for positioning about the platen of a writing machine, for rotational movement therewith; a thin flexible and resilient cushioning portion; means for positioning and holding said cushioning portion comprising a pocket on said body portion defined by at least a pair of thin, flexible layers sandwiching the cushioning portion therebetween for movement with the body portion; and means on the body portion for holding said writing material in juxtaposition with the cushioning portion for movement with the body portion, with the cushioning portion disposed between the platen and the writing material to permit the stencil portion of the writing material to be deformed when struck by the type of the writing machine.
2. The writing materials holder of claim 1 wherein said means for holding the writing material includes a lip formed on the body portion with the base of the lip comprising an aligning means and being generally parallel to the axis of the platen when the holder is positioned properly theresbout, said lip being disposed generally along one edge of said pocket so that the writing material may be edge inserted under the lip against the base thereof to align the writing material with the platen and with the writing material overlying the cushioning portion.
3. The writing materials holder of claim 1 wherein at least one side of said pocket is open to permit replacement of said cushioning portion.
4. The writing materials holder of claim 1 wherein the outer layer of said pair of layers is fabricated of a relatively tough material such as plastic or the like.
5. The writing materials holder of claim 4 wherein the inner layer of said pair of layers is fabricated of tear-resistant material.

1. A writing materials holder for use in a typewriter having a relatively hard platen, to hold writing materials which have stencil portions, such as foil or the like, which are permanently deformed or embossed with the impressions of the type when struck thereby, comprising: a thin, flexible body portion for positioning about the platen of a writing machine, for rotational movement therewith; a thin flexible and resilient cushioning portion; means for positioning and holding said cushioning portion comprising a pocket on said body portion defined by at least a pair of thin, flexible layers sandwiching the cushioning portion therebetween for movement with the Body portion; and means on the body portion for holding said writing material in juxtaposition with the cushioning portion for movement with the body portion, with the cushioning portion disposed between the platen and the writing material to permit the stencil portion of the writing material to be deformed when struck by the type of the writing machine.
2. The writing materials holder of claim 1 wherein said means for holding the writing material includes a lip formed on the body portion with the base of the lip comprising an aligning means and being generally parallel to the axis of the platen when the holder is positioned properly thereabout, said lip being disposed generally along one edge of said pocket so that the writing material may be edge inserted under the lip against the base thereof to align the writing material with the platen and with the writing material overlying the cushioning portion.
3. The writing materials holder of claim 1 wherein at least one side of said pocket is open to permit replacement of said cushioning portion.
4. The writing materials holder of claim 1 wherein the outer layer of said pair of layers is fabricated of a relatively tough material such as plastic or the like.
5. The writing materials holder of claim 4 wherein the inner layer of said pair of layers is fabricated of tear-resistant material.
