Description
J. R. WATKINS. Door-Check.
No. 203,302. Patented May 7, I878.
Witnesses Invenior.
UNITED STATES PATENTOFFIGE.
JOHN R. WATKINS, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
IMPROVEMENT IN DOOR-CHECKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 203,302, dated May 7,1878; application filed November 13, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN R. WATKINS, of Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fenders and Keepers for Doors, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
The object of my invention is, that when a door is opened, to prevent it being thrown back against the wall, thereby damaging the plaster or paper by the key or knob of the lock, and to hold the door open, if desired, so
shank B, made of any suitable metal, is firmly screwed. The outer end of the shank B is made as a Y. In the end of each side of the Y is an india-rubber roller, 0 6, made in proportion to opening of the Y, so that the edges of the rollers O G will nearly touch.
D is the door, in which a mortise is cut to receivethe metal plate E, and with additional space to receive a portion of the Y of the shank B and the rollers O G. The plate E is made with two openings, F F, through which the rollers G O are forced when the door is pushed back. The plate E is held in position inthe door by the screws G G.
When the door is opened and pushed back the india-rubber rollers are compressed by passing through the openings F F, and after passing the solid piece H in the plate E expand to their original size, touching the solid piece H and the sides of the plate E, thereby holding the door'firmly in a horizontal position with the wall. When the door is. pulled from the wall the rollers G O are again compressed through the openings F F, and the door is free.
I claim as my invention- The improved door-checks, consisting of a forked or Y-shaped shank, B, carrying two rubber rollers, O G, in combination with recessed plate E, divided into openings or compartments F F, substantially as shown and described, for the purpose set forth.
W. E. OHAFFEE, THos. W. STEWART.
