This invention relates to ironing boards of the foldable type and has for the primary object the provision of small and large board elements, either of which may be conveniently positioned for use and an improved support for said elements, whereby the height of the latter from the floor may be varied and said support being capable of folding in close relation to the board elements so that the device in entirety will only require a very small storage space when folded and may be easily carried from one place to another.

With these and other objects in view this invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation illustrating an ironing board constructed in accordance with my invention.

Figure 2 is a side elevation illustrating a board in a folded position.

Figure 3 is a bottom plan view showing the board in a folded position.

Figure 4 is a fragmentary end view showing how the board elements may be reversed or adjusted to permit either of the board elements to be positioned for use.

Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral I indicates a foldable support carrying

board elements

2 and 3. The board element 2 is of a greater size than the board element 3 and the latter is hinged to a bracket 4 secured to the under face of the board element 2 by suitable fasteners. Also secured to said face of the board element 2 is a strip 5 forming a rest for the board element 3 when the latter is positioned for use or disposed over the board element 2. A separable fastener 6 is provided between the strip 5 and the board element 3 and when separated will permit the board element 3 to be swung upon the bracket 4.

The support I consists of pairs of legs I connected adjacent their ends by upper and lower spacer and connecting rods 8 and 9. The pairs of legs are pivotally connected, as shown at I0, permitting said legs to be collapsed or extended as desired and when extended the upper ends support the board elements. One pair of said legs has secured thereto a block I I by fasteners I 2 and this block abuts the spacer rod 8 of said pair of legs. The block II carries a bolt I3 having a wing nut I4 and the bolt extends through a bracket I5 and the latter may be drawn tightly against the block II by adjusting the wing nut on the bolt so as to prevent said bracket from having pivotal movement on the block. The

board element 2 is hinged to the block II, as shown at I 6, and when in use is supported at one end by said bracket while the board is engaged by the upper end of a pair of legs adjacent its other end with the board element 3 contacting with the spacer rod 8 of said last-named pair of legs. The connection between the bracket I5 and the block II will permit the board elements to be reversed so that either of said board elements may be positioned for use.

An adjusting brace I1 is hinged to one pair of said legs and is provided with a series of notches I8 to engage with the spacer 9 of the other pair of legs whereby the board elements may be adjusted upwardly and downwardly to vary the distance between said board elements and the support or floor so that the device may be readily adjusted for use by persons of different heights. The disengagement of the adjusting brace I! from the spacer rod 9 will permit the legs to fold or collapse rendering the device in entirety of a very compact nature, as shown in Figure 2, so that it can be easily carried and stored in a small space.

Having described the invention, I claim:

1. A foldable ironing board comprising a large board and a smaller board which is secured to but spaced from one of the faces of the larger board, pairs of pivotally connected crossed legs, upper and lower roads spacing and connecting the pairs of legs, a block pivoted between the upper ends of one pair of spaced legs and normally in contact with the upper spacer rod for said'pair of legs, a substantially U-shaped bracket centrally pivoted to the block, and the larger board having one of its ends received between and pivoted to the arms of the bracket and designed to rest on the upper ends of the second pair of spaced legs, when the device is in set up position, and the shorter board designed to rest on the upper spacer rod of 'said last mentioned pair of legs when the device is in said set up position, and also whereby the larger board may be raised on the bracket and the bracket turned on its pivot to bring the reverse face of the board to rest on the upper ends of said last named pair of legs and to arrange the smaller board in outer operative position.

2. The ironing board construction claimed in 1, and means for hinging the smaller board to the larger board, spacer means for holding the smaller board parallel with the larger board, catch means for latching the smaller board to the spacer means, and adjustable binding means on the pivot for the U-shaped bracket for holding the bracket from turning on the block.
