Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
PHILETUS L. MURPHY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO JOHN B. LU GAR, OF SAME PLACE.
. IMPROVEMENT lN DUMPlNG-SCOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 203,185, dated April 30, 1878 application filed April 6, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PHILETUS L. MURPHY, of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Dumping-Scows;
and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the con struction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making. a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a plan View of my dumping-scow. Fig. 2 is a plan view as operated. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section, and Fig. 4 is an end view thereof.
My invention relates to dumping scows or vessels; and it consists in a vessel made in four sections, hinged together at the ends and in the center, and in the construction and arran gement of parts, all as hereinafter more fully set forth,
The annexed drawings, to which reference is made, fully illustrate my invention.
The vessel or scow may be built of any length desired, and the incline to be of any desired angle. It is made in four sections, A A and B B, of equal size, in such a manner as if the vessel were divided in the center lengthwise and crosswise.
In the center of the vessel the two sections I A A are provided with heavy iron hinges a or, placed in inclined position, as shown, both on the bottom of the keel and on top of the deck, and a pin, a, is passed through said hinges to connect them. This pin is removable, so as to be connected and disconnected at will. The sections B B are connected in like manner by hinges b b and pin 1). At each end of the vessel the sections A B are connected by hinges d d and pin 61.
It will readily be seen that the four sections of the vessel can be closed together to form a complete scow, when the parts maybe held by a chain, link, pin, or other suitable fastening, f. By releasing this fastening the scow can be opened on its hinges so as to dump the load.
At each joint on top of the sections are placed curved bars I, crossing the joints, and provided with flanges t c at the ends, said bars being held down on the sections by staples h h, as shown. The curved bars I I limit the movement of the sections upon their hinges, so that they cannot open except a certain distance.
I am aware that a scow has been made in two sections, fastened at one end by a hinge, at the'other end by a rope. This Ihave found is not practicable for the purpose for which it was intended, inasmuch as it cannot be opened wide enough to allow the dirt at its forward end to fall through. In my present invention this is obviated.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A dumping-scow composed of four sections, hinged together at the ends and center of the scow, substantially as described, and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. The combination of the sections A A and B B, hinges a b d, and pins a b d, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
3. A dumping-scow consisting of the sections A, A, B, and B, hinges a b d, and curved bars I, with flanges i at their ends, operating in the manner as described.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
PHILETUS L. MURPHY.
