Claims.
My invention relates to clothes-poles such as are arranged across clothes closets from one Wall to another and attached at opposite ends to the molding strips or cleats with which the walls of 5 the closet are provided.
Extensible devices of this character for employment in closets of varied widths have been provided before, but the mountings for these devices either have not provided the requisite strength or have been diiiicult to attach, or, when attached, were impossible to remove Without mutilating or destroying the attachment means.
The object of my present invention is to provide an extensible device of the character above described with improved means for attaching the ends of the device to the molding strips or cleats with which the walls of the closet are provided, which improved means will provide attachments of requisite strength and attachments which may be readily applied, and at the same time are adapted to be readily removed Without mutilating or destroying the attachment means or pole.
Further objects and the features and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure l is a perspective view of a device embodying the present invention showing fragmentarily at one end a section of one of the closet walls supporting one end of the device;
Figure 2`is a vertical section taken on the line 2 2 of Figure 1, but showing the adjacent end of the device attached to the molding strip or cleat with which the adjacent wall of the closet is provided;
Figure 3 is an end view showing the mounting of the attachment means upon the ends of the pole; and
Figure 4 is a horizontal section taken on the line dof Figure l.
In the illustrated embodiment of the invention, 5 5 designate the opposite walls of a closet; G-G supporting strips, such as molding or hookstrips secured to the walls; and 'I the improved extensible clothes-pole.
The pole 'I is shown as comprising telescopically related sections in the form of tubes 8 and 9 equipped with means lil and II, respectively, for attaching the ends of the pole to the supporting strips 6, 6. The attaching means at III and I I are of the same form and are applied to the tubular members 8 and 9 in the same manner, so that a description of one will suiiice for both.
Describing the attachment means at I0, it consists of a sheet metal bracket member I2 depressed at I3 to receive the adjacent ends cf the tube 8 which has integral tabs E3 extending through diametrically opposite arcuate openings It in the bracket member i2, and turned over and clinched rmly to the bracket member to secure this member rigidly to the adjacent end of the tube 8. lt is to be understood that the invention may employ other means than the means shown Vfor rigidly securing the outer ends of the tubes "3 and ii to the respective bracket members E2. The opposite end of the outer tube 8 may be finished by means of a ferrule I5.
The flanges at the opposite vertical edges or the bracket member I2 are turned to form chan nels IS, and a second Sheet metal bracket mem`A ber Il is slidable in these flanges for adjusting the attachment means to molding or hook-strips of different widths- The upper end of the bracket member I2 is turned in at I3 and the lower end of the bracket member Il is turned in at I9 to embrace the upper and lower edges of the molding or hook-strips. These inturned iianges' I 8 and I9 have tongues 2S and 2E turned downwardly and upwardly, respectively, from the flanges I8 and I9, and adapted for rm biting engagement" with the upper and lower edges ci the molding or hook-strips 6.
The bracket members I2 and Il are adjustably connected by a screw or bolt 22, the shank of which passes through openings in the anges I8 and I9 and engages beneath the flange I9 in a wing nut 23. Adjacent its upper headed end, the bolt 22 has a square or non-circular neck 24 which holds the bolt against turning in the ange I8.
In applying the pole, the bracket members I2, Il, at opposite ends thereof, are opened sufhciently to engage the flanges I8 and I9 over the molding or hook-strips 6, whereupon the pole sections 8 and 9 are extended between the strips 6, and the flanges I8 and I9 oi the bracket members are en-y gaged over the strips. The wing nuts 23 are then tightened to clamp the brackets to the respective strips 6 and to force the tongues 2G and 2l rmly into biting engagement with the opposite edges of the Wood strips, as shown. The disposition and adjustment of the bracket members I2, II, substantially normal to the axis of the po-le l, with their radial extension from opposite sides of the pole, provides a strong attachment which can be conveniently applied and removed, and the biting engagement of the tongues 20 and 2| with the opposite edges of the molding or hook-strips 6 further increases the security of the attachment.
I do not intend to be limited to the precise details shown or described.
I claim:
