8 Claims.
This invention relates to a paper holder and more particularly a paper holder and severing device.
The object of the invention is to provide in a unitary metal structure a combined paper holder or support and severing member, safe and durable in operation, relatively simple in construction, and economical to manufacture.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the combine unitary frame comprising the paper supporting portion and the severing member;
Fig. 2 is a front elevational view of the frame shown in Fig. 1 with a roll of paper in position and showing the backing panel and covering shield, with the latter partially broken away;
Fig. 3 is a side elevational view of the device mounted for operation as shown in Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a front elevational view of the backing panel and shield detached from the frame shown in Fig. 1; and,
Fig. 5 is an enlarged vertical sectional view taken substantially on the line 5 5 of Fig. 2.
As illustrated in the drawing, the preferred embodiment of the invention comprises a wire frame having a transverse supporting portion 'I. The wire comprising this portion is then bent at right angles at both ends to provide parallel arms 8 and 9. Arms 8 and 9 are then bent inwardly to provide the paper roll suspending tongs I El and II, respectively, which are in alignment and in parallel relation to the portion l.
The severing feature of the device is preferably likewise composed of a single strand of wire but is rendered unitary with the supporting portion just described by a spot welding operation. This severing portion consists of a severing bar I2 which is preferably less in length than the supporting bar l. The wire strand comprising this severing portion is similarly bent at right angles at both ends to produce parallel arms I3 and I4, the ends of which are spot welded to the bar 'I at points I5 and I6, respectively. It Will be noted that arms I3 and I4 are slightly greater in length than arms 8 and 9 and, by reference to Figs. l and 3, it will be seen that these arms are arranged at a definite angle whereby the largest roll of paper adapted to be received may be inserted into the device by inserting tongs I0 and II through the open ends of the paper roll with the roll placed so as to unroll from the top downward, as shown in Fig. 3. The wire employed is suiciently flexible and resilient to permit of this operation and the angularity mentioned is suiiicient to cause a slight spring action by the severing bar I2 upon the upper and forward surface of the paper roll.
The supporting panel and shield may be composed of cardboard, wood, or metal as desired, and comprises a flat backing panel Il having an upper reduced portion with opposite bulged projections I 8 and I9 over which the arms of the frame are yieldingly forced to assume the position shown in Fig. 2. The cover or shield for protecting the paper from dust et cetera is preferably a continuation of the panel Il to form the shield by scoring and bending along the line 2l, for example, in case cardboard is used for this purpose. the roll of paper 22 rests against the backing panel I'I and in the case of waxed paper, for eX- ample, the member Il prevents soiling as would occur if the frame were hung directly upon a wall. upper edge with openings 23 and 24 through which supporting hooks 25 may be inserted for attaching the structure to a wall. The device is especially designed for household use in connection with a roll of waxed paper, for example, to be used in wrapping articles of food, although it is to be understood that the invention is not necessarily confined to this use or the relative dimensions indicated.
In the described construction and arrangement, the roll of paper 22 performs a definite function.
By reference to Fig. 3, it will be noted that the suspension arms 8 and il are held outward from the panel il by the paper roll. As the size of the roll decreases, arms 8 and S gradually move inwardly toward they panel Il, and, simultaneously, the shearing bar I2 moves downwardly. This insures a continuous, tightly pressed contact of the shearing bar i2 against the paper surface to facilitate shearing at all times as the size of the roll diminishes, and thus it has been found feasible to construct a. unitary frame, omitting hinged or movable parts and thus reduce the cost of manufacture and at the same time increase. the durability and efliciency.
While we have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying our invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification Without departing from the spirit of the invention. Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: Y

A device of the character described, comprising a transverse supporting bar formed of Wire bent at right angles at both ends to provide a pair of parallel arms, said arms bent inwardly to provide suspending tongs, a severing bar formed of wire bent at right angles at both ends to provide a pair of parallel resilient arms, and
Y a rigid connection between said parallel resilient arms and said supporting bar.
2. A device of the character described, comprising a transverse supporting bar formed of wire bent at right angles' at both ends to provide a pair of parallel arms, said arms bent inwardly to vprovide suspending tongs, a severing bar formed of wire bent at right angles at both ends to provide a second pair of parallel arms, and a rigid spot welded connection between said second pair of parallel arms and said supporting bar.

A device of the character described, comprising a transverse supporting bar formed of wire bent at right angles at both ends to provide a pair of parallel arms, said arms bent inwardly to provide suspending tongs, a lsevering bar formed oi wire bent at right angles at both ends to provide a pair of parallel resilient arms, and a rigid connection between said parallel resilient arms and said supporting bar, said second pair of parallel arms being of greater length than said first pair of parallel arms.

A device of the character described, comprising a transverse supporting bar formed Vof wire bent at right angles at both ends to provide a pair of parallel arms, said arms bent inwardly to provide suspending tongs, a severing bar formed of wire bent at right angles at both ends to provide a second pair of parallel arms, and a rigid spot Welded connection between said second pair of parallel arms and said supporting ban said second pair of parallel arms being of greater length than said first pair of parallel arms.
5. A device of the character described, comprising a transverse supporting bar, inturned paper roll suspending tongs secured to said supporting bar, a severing bar spaced from said tongs, a
rigid connection between said severing bar and said supporting bar, and a backing panel having a reduced upper portion adapted to receive and support said transverse bar.

A device of the character described, comprising a transverse supporting bar, inturned paper roll suspending tongs secured to said supporting bar, a severing bar spaced from said tongs, a rigid connection between said severing bar and said supporting bar, a backing panel having a reduced upper portion adapted to receive and sup- Y port said transverse bar, and a covering shield extending forwardly from the reduced portion of said backing panel.

A device of the character described, comprising a transverse supporting bar formed of wire bent at right angles at both ends to provide a pair of parallel arms, said arms bent inwardly to provide suspending tongs, 'al severing bar formed of wire bent at right angles at both ends to provide a second pair of parallel arms, a rigid connection between said second pairv of parallel arms and said supporting bar, and a backing panel having a reduced upper portion adapted to receive the upper ends of the rst said parallel arms and thereby support said transverse bar, whereby a roll of paper suspended from. said prongs is adapted to rest against said backing panel and hold said first mentioned pair of arms outwardly to maintain continuous contact of said severing bar with the paper surface.

A device or the character described, comprising a transverse supporting bar formed of wire bent at right angles at both ends to provide a pair of parallel arms, said arms bent inwardly to provide suspending tongs, a severing bar formed of wire bent at right angles at both ends to provide a second pair of parallel arms, a. rigid spot Welded connection between said pair of parallel arms and said supporting bar, and a backing panel having a reduced upper portion adapted to receive the upper ends of the irst said parallel arms and thereby support said transverse bar, whereby a roll of paper suspended from said prongs is adapted to rest against said backing panel and hold said rst mentioned pair of arms outwardly to maintain continuous contact of said severing bar with the paper surface.
