1 Claim.
My invention relates to improvements in window ventilators, particularly of .a type which may be readily attached at the top or bottom of a window pane to the pane and to the adjacent portion of the sash, although my invention may, if desired, be employed in larger sizes without changes in form at the bottom of a window.
Objects of my invention are to provide a window ventilator, simple in construction, made of durable material at a minimum cost, and one which may be readily attached and detached. A further object of my invention is to provide a window ventilator including a body portion of substantial thickness, having van oblique slot therein l extending from the inside to the outside, the slot being constructed .oblique to the paneA of the window, and of such a depth that it is impossible for rain or snow to come directly into the house.
The progress of the elements, dirt and insects is preferably further arrested by providing screen means on the outer surface of the ventilator.
A further object of my invention is to provide a window ventilator in which the size of the slot or other means admitting air to the interior is adjusted by means of a vertically slidable plate,
slidable relative to the slot to positions completely closing the slot, completely opening the slot, and a plurality of positions partially closing the slot to admit adjustable amounts of air to the interior and means to lock said vertically adjustable plate in .any of said aforesaid positions. I .believe I am the rst to provide a vertical, slidable closure or plate for an air admitting slot in ventilators, which is simple in its Construction and positive in its action and much superior to the type of pivoted means hitherto employed in winy'dow ventilators for adjustably varying the amount of air admitted.
A further object of my invention is to provide '40 a window ventilator of a type having a vertically sliding, closure member, in which not only the guideways therefor, but also the closure member itself may be readily removed for cleaning purposes. I also preferably make both the guideway 45 forming inset portion and vertically slidable closure member of my invention of metal, so that they may be readily lubricated and cleaned by oil or otherwise if desired.
A further object of my invention is to provide 50 a ventilator which may be mounted in either sash and of such a relatively small thickness as not to interfere with the opening and closing of the other sash. Y

In the drawing, Figure 1 is an elevational view of the interior of a window frame and the usual type of window sash, having my improved window 5 ventilator mounted in the lower portion of one of the upper panes thereof.

In the drawing wherein like characters of reference indicate like parts throughout, I0 generally indicates a window ventilator constructed 20 in accordance with my invention. Said window ventilator I0 is preferably of rectangular construction and preferably includes a body portion -of a length substantially that of a window pane or window, of a substantial height and of sub- 25 stantial thickness, having a longitudinal slot I2 substantially the length thereof extending obliquely therethrough from the inside to the outside of said body portion, in my preferred embodiment extending obliquely downwardly from 30 inside to outside. While I have shown the body portion of my improved window ventilator as being constructed of wood, it is obvious that it may, if desired, be constructed of other suitable material. The body portion Il) is provided with a rabbet I4 in the top or bottom edge of the outside edge thereof, in my preferred embodiment shown at the top edge, and a flange I6 projecting vertically from the other top or bottom edge thereof at the outside edge thereof, in my preferred embodiment projecting vertically downwardly from the bottom edge thereof, andv flanges 'i8 projecting laterally from each side of the outside edge thereof. While my improved type of window ventilator is adapted to be attached underneath a window and retained in position by the Window with the flanges I 6 and I8 abutting the window frame rabbet and the groove I4 receiving the lower edge of the window or vice versa, I preferably construct my improved window ventilator, as shown in the drawing, of a size so that it may fit in the top or bottom of a standard window panel. While A the window panel may consist of a single piece .of glass in the entire window, my invention is particularly adapted to be inserted in a window made up of a plurality of window panes, in the top or bottom of one of the window pane panels, and I have shown it in Figure 1 as attached underneath a window pane 20, the corresponding portion of the window pane having been removed. Thus, as shown in Figures l and 2 and 5, the lower flange I6 is adapted to abut a lower sash rail or bar, as shown, the lower sash rail 2|, or if used underneath a window a lower window frame rabbet, and the flanges I8 projectinglaterally from each side of the outside edge thereof are adapted to abut a sash bar rabbet, a sash rail rabbet or a window frame rabbet, in the embodiment shown, the flange I8@ being adapted to abut a window stile rabbet and the flange I8b being adapted to abut a vertical window sash bar rabbet. The groove I4 is adapted, if desired, to receive the inside edge of the lower or upper surface of a window sash rail or, as shown, the lower or upper surface, in the embodiment shown the lower surface, of the window pane 26, having its lower portion removed for reception of my improved window ventilator. The outer surface of the lower edge of the window7 pane is adapted to be secured within the groove I4 by means of the putty 22 or other means, and the outside surfaces of the flanges I6, ISB and ISb are adapted to be secured within the respective window sash rail rabbet, window sash stile rabbet or window sash bar rabbet, by means of the putty 2'I in similar manner with the edge of the pane of glass is secured within said other respective rabbets or by other suitable means. As shown in Figure 2 in the embodiment shown, the slot I2 extends from the upper portion of the inside edge thereof, through the thickness of the body portion II of my improved window ventilator and discharges at the lower portion of the outside edge thereof, the circulation as usual, going from the outside obliquely yupwardly through the passage I2 and discharging from the inside top portion of the body portion I I as shown. In the embodiment shown, the flanges I6, I8a and I8b are formed integrally with the body portion II.
While I have shown my improved window ventilator preferably attached tov a window frame or window sash portion by means of the respective flanges I6, I8a and I8b and groove I4, it is obvious that other means on the edges thereof may be provided to rigidly secure my Window ventilator to a window pane edge and sash panel or that if desired, my improved window ventilator may be attached underneath or'above a window sash without any means of holding it in position other than the weight of the window sash.
The outside edge of the oblique slot I2 Vis preferably provided with screen means 26, comprising a standard type of screen or other type of screen means attached to `the outside surface of the body portion I6 by the tacks: 2S or by other means well known in the art. It is thus obvious that the screen means 26 will prevent large particles of dirt, insects and in a considerable degree, the elements, such as wind, rain and snow from passing to the interior of the room and that the slot I2 is of such a depth and arranged obliquely at such an angle that it will be impossible for the wind to blow directly into the room, and rain or snow will also be prevented from directly raining or snowing into the room. I also provide a closure 36 for the inside edge of the slot I2 vertically slidably mounted on the inside edge of said body portion II, and means 32 to secure said closure 36 to said body portion II in adjustable vertical positions relative to the inside end of said longitudinal slot I2 in a position to completely close said slot, to completely open said slot I2, and in my preferred embodiment a plurality of adjustable positions partially closing said slot.
While any suitable type of a vertically slidable closure may be provided, in my preferred embodiment I preferably provide vertically extending guideways 34 mounted adjacent each side of the inside edge of said body portion, Thus in my improved embodiment I provide a met-al plate 36 adapted to be secured to the inside edge of said body portion, by suitable means such as by screws 38 and having a central inset portion 4I] extending substantially the height of said body portion I I, and substantially the length of said plate 36. Adjacent each side cf said inset portion, I provide the metal strips d2 secured at the top and bottom thereof to edges of said metal plate exterior of said inset portion by any suitable means, such as by the screws 44, said plates 42 forming with the ends of said inside portion 40 the guideways 34 to receive the ends of the preferably rectangular vertical, slidable closure portion 36. In my preferred embodiment the plate 36 and vertical slidable plate 36 are preferably constructed of metal, although it is apparent that any suitable type of material may be employed. The body member, in my preferred embodiment, the inset portion 4E! of said plate member 36 is also provided centrally thereof with a plurality of vertically aligned holes 46. As the preferred type of means to secure said vertical slidable closure 30 to said body portion II or plate 36, I pro- Vide a hinged locking member 32, comprising a base 48 adapted to be secured to the central portion of the closure member 30 by suitable means,
such as the rivets 50, and I hingedly mount the swingable portion 52 thereof on said base by means of the hinge pin 54 passing'through suitable ears 51 on said base and said hinged portion 52. The hinged portion 52 is provided at the lower end thereof with a pin 56 projecting outwardly therefrom and a hole 55 is provided in the lower portion of the closure member 30 immediately below said base 48 adapted to receive the pin 56, the outer end of the pin 56 being adapted to be slidably inserted in any one of the desired 'holes 46, yit being obvious that if the pin 56 is inserted in the uppermost hole that the closure l3l) will be moved to a position completely closing said longitudinal slot I2 and if inserted through the lowermost hole, the closure will be moved to a position completely opening the longitudinal slot I2, yand if inserted in any selected intermediate hole, that the closure will be locked in a position opening the slot predetermined adjustable amounts. To move and lock the closuremember 30 it is thus obvious that it is merely necessary to pivot the hinged portion 52 upwards and raise the vertically slidable closure member 30, and when this is moved to the desired position, press outwardly on the hinged portion 52 inserting the pin 56 through the hole 55 in the closure member and into the desired selected hole 46 in the body portion II, it being obvious that when it is again desired to move the closure member that prior to its movement the hinged member 52 must be pivoted inwards to move the pin 56 from its selected hole 46 to permit vertical slidable movement of the vertical closure member 36 to its desired position.
It is thus apparent that I have provided a novel type of a window ventilator, adapted for use in connection with a window frame, a Window sash or a window sash panel constructed of a minimum number of simple parts in a simple manner, and which will positively prevent the ingress of insects and the elements within the room and in which the air ventilation may be adjustably varied by moving a vertical slidable closure member relative to the inside edge of a vertical slot and locking it in selected adjustable positions relative thereto.
It is understood that my invention is not limited to the specific embodiment shown and that'l various deviations may be made therefrom without departing from the spirit and scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is:
A rectangular window ventilator comprising `a Wooden body portion of a length substantially that of a window frame or window, of a substantial height, and of a substantial thickness having a longitudinal slot substantially the length thereof extending obliquely therethrough, said body having means on the edges thereof adapted to be non-leakably secured to a Window pane edge and sash panel or a window frame, said body having an inner surface having an inset portion extending substantially over said inner surface, a closure plate vertically slidably mounted in said inset portion and having a central hole near the lower edge thereof, a hinged locking member mounted centrally of said plate having a pin projecting inwardly therefrom through said hole in closed position, said body also being provided centrally with a plurality of vertically aligned holes to selectively receive said pin to secure saidclosure to said body in adjustable vertical positions relative to said longitudinal slot, in a position completely closing said slot, a position completely opening said slot, and a plurality of positions partially closing said slot, retaining strips extending Vertically over each edge of said inset portion to form therewith, retaining guidewaysfor the outer ends of said closure plate, and threaded means detachably securing said strips to the inner surface of said body exterior of said inset portion.
