The invention relates to wrenches for rotating oil-well tubing sections, and has for its object to provide a device of this character whereby the casing sections may be screwed into or out of couplings connecting the sections, as the tubing is sunk or pulled.
A further object is to provide an oil well tubing wrench comprising a jaw adapted to be received in one side of the tubing, a handle member and a link connection between the handle member and one end of the jaw and provided with means whereby when the handle is moved in one direction said links will cooperate with the adjacent side of the tubing for rolling or forcing the tubing side into the jaw for positively holding the tubing during a screwing or unscrewing operation. Also to provide means whereby upon a reverse movement of the handle said link connection between the handle and jaw will roll the tubing out of the jaw.
A further object is to provide an oil well tubing Wrench comprising a jaw segmentally shaped and adapted to arch one side of the tube with a gripping die at the outer end thereof, a handle member adjacent the inner end of the jaw and having a link connection with said jaw end and a link connection with gripping means adjacent its pivotal point to the jaw and cooperating with the periphery of the tube whereby when the handle member is moved in one direction for a tube turning operation the tube will be rolled into gripped position within the jaw and held therein, and when the held member is moved in the opposite direction said means carried by the link connection will roll the tubing out of its gripped position within the jaw.
With the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawing, described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Wrenches of this character are relatively large as the tubing sections they grip are necessarily large and of the type used in oil well. In using wrenches of this size in the oil well field three men usually stand around the tubing and each one imparts a pull on the handle for a continuous turning operation. If desired the handle l may be initially turned where the thread of the tube is stuck by applying a block and tackle to the eye 2 carried by the handle. In wrenches as at present constructed there is not a positive gripping within the jaw, and when there is a frictional gripping it is exceedingly hard to remove the wrench from its gripping position on the tube. The present invention is primarily designed to provide means whereby upon the initial movement of the handle in one direction, the tube will be rolled or forced into gripped position Within the segmentally shaped jaw 3 of the wrench, and upon movement of the handle I in the opposite direction the gripped tube within the jaw will be rolled from its gripped position within the jaw 3. The jaw 3 is segmentally shaped and has its outer end provided with a die 4 adapted to engage and bite into one side of the outer periphery of the tube section 5.
The inner end of the jaw 3 is pivotally connected at 6 on a shoulder bolt 1 to link plates 8 which are on opposite sides of the jaw, and which plates are provided with gripping teeth or shoulders 9, which, when the links are in open position, as shown at In in Figure 5, engage the outer periphery of the tubing 5 opposite the die 4 carried by the jaw, and when the plates 8 are moved towards the tubing 5 from their dotted line positions a in Figure 5, the adjacent side of the tubing is rolled into the jaw 3 on the die 4 as a pivotal point until the plates 8 assume the intermediate full line position b, Figure 5 and the further moving of the plates 8 to the full line position a, Figure 5 will force the tubing into gripped relation within the jaw 3, thereby positively gripping the tubing and positively holding the wrench on the tube. When it is desired to remove the wrench from the tubing a reverse movement of the handle I in the direction of the arrow d will cause the gripping teeth 9 of the plate to roll the tubing out of its gripped position within the segmental jaw 3.
